Following Arkansas’ lead, Hispanic lawmakers in CT seek to bar term ‘Latinx’ in state government

February 1, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

After years of cultural clashes over the use of the gender-neutral term “Latinx,” a group of Connecticut lawmakers is hoping to banish the word from the state’s lexicon. A bill filed recently by five Hispanic lawmakers would prohibit state agencies from using Latinx in any official communications and documents. The bill’s chief sponsor, state Rep. Geraldo Reyes Jr., D-Waterbury, argued that the term alienates native-Spanish speakers, particularly members of Connecticut’s sizeable Puerto Rican population . The use of Latinx as an alternative to typical gendered nouns such as “Latino” and “Latina” has divided many Hispanics and Spanish-speakers in recent years, with some, such as Reyes, describing it as an example of “woke” terminology being promoted mostly by white activists. Others say that the term offers inclusive language for people who do not identify with either gender, and that it has been gaining in popularity particularly among younger speakers. Earlier this month, … [Read more...] about Following Arkansas’ lead, Hispanic lawmakers in CT seek to bar term ‘Latinx’ in state government

In late December last year, Radical unveiled the SR3 XXR as a more potent and hardcore version of one of its most popular products. Now, the British company also upgrades the SR10 to XXR specification by adding aerodynamic and other upgrades to this more powerful race car. The single-seater now features new front louvers, which should improve the aerodynamics at high speeds and have a positive effect on handling and cooling, according to Radical. Another novelty comes in the form of an LMP-inspired central fin, also seen on the SR3 XXR. New lightweight alloy wheels and new front DRL lights round off the improvements that come as standard equipment for this optimized version of the SR10. Optionally, customers can have a new carbon splitter and diffuser package, which brings additional weight reduction. Alonso “wouldn’t accept” continuing in F1 at less than 100%

February 1, 2023 by www.motorsport.com Leave a Comment

Listen to this article Alonso returned to F1 with Alpine in 2021 after taking a two-year break to race in the FIA World Endurance Championship, the Indy 500 and the Dakar Rally. Alonso's third stint at the Enstone outfit got off to a slow start but once he got back up to speed the Spaniard re-found his old form, frequently suggesting he was driving at his best-ever level in 2022, a season which was blighted by reliability issues. For 2023, Alonso jumped ship to Aston Martin, which struggled last year to finish seventh in the constructors' championship. While the team is a step down from Alpine in the short term, the Lawrence Stroll-led outfit managed to convince Alonso with its long-term project, answering to Alonso's desire to stay in F1 for years to come. And the 41-year-old says he wouldn't have accepted to continue if he didn't think he was still capable of performing at his peak, or if he wasn't convinced that Aston can close the gap while he is still around. … [Read more...] about Alonso “wouldn’t accept” continuing in F1 at less than 100%

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 20 ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reaffirmed Wednesday that Turkey won’t allow Sweden to join the NATO military alliance as long as the Scandinavian country permits protests desecrating Islam’s holy book to take place. Turkey, which had already been holding off approving Sweden and Finland’s membership in the Western military alliance, has been infuriated by a series of separate demonstrations in Stockholm. In one case a solitary anti-Islam activist burned the Quran outside the Turkish Embassy, while in an unconnected protest an effigy of Erdogan was hanged. Even before that, Ankara had been pressing Sweden and Finland to crack down on exiled members of Kurdish and other groups it sees as terrorists, and to allow arms sales to Turkey. Texas set to execute Wesley Ruiz despite ongoing fight over state’s use of old lethal injection drugs

February 1, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

On Wednesday evening, Texas plans to execute Wesley Ruiz despite the ongoing controversy surrounding the state’s use of drugs long past their original expiration dates to kill prisoners. Ruiz, 43, was sentenced to death nearly 15 years ago for the 2007 shooting of Dallas police Senior Cpl. Mark Nix following a high-speed car chase. The chase began while police were searching for a murder suspect, according to court documents. Ruiz’s car eventually slid off the side of the road, and Nix rushed over and began smashing the passenger side window with his police baton. Ruiz fatally shot him in the chest through the back passenger window, court filings state. In an active legal battle, Ruiz and other condemned prisoners have argued the state prison system should not be allowed to continue extending the expiration dates of its execution drugs. They claim the use of old drugs violates the U.S. Constitution’s prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment. With fewer pharmacies willing … [Read more...] about Texas set to execute Wesley Ruiz despite ongoing fight over state’s use of old lethal injection drugs

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 21 The owners of Houston nightclub Cle worked hard to get the world's best deejay talent to the razzle dazzle club that has redefined Houston nightlife. And now those same partners have employed considerable effort – and no small amount of showy sophistication – to bring a new, high level of dining to Houston with Bisou ("kiss" in French), opening for dinner tonight at River Oaks District, 4444 Westheimer. Armed with a knockout design and a chef who happens to be among the most elite classically trained chefs in the country, Bisou is ready to start doling out the charm and maybe even a few pecks on the cheek. The 5,500-square foot restaurant, in the former Taverna that closed in June, represents a huge leap for the Cle Group that operates Cle and Spire nightclubs. Kvyat and Bortolotti join Prema’s expanded WEC line-up for 2023

Listen to this article Kvyat and Bortolotti will share Prema’s second Oreca 07-Gibson with the previously-announced Doriane Pin, forming an all-rookie line-up in the LMP2 class of the WEC. The Italian outfit’s primary #9 entry will be crewed by one-time Formula 3 race winner Bent Viscaal, 20-year-old Romanian Filip Ugran and Juan Manuel Correa. Correa, who was announced by Prema in early January alongside Pin, will miss the opening round at Sebring due to a clash with Formula 2, with his place in the crew being taken by Lamborghini ace Andrea Caldarelli. Prema has decided not to retain any of the three drivers that were part of its first assault on the WEC in 2022, with Robert Kubica , Lorenzo Colombo and Louis Deletraz all dropped from the team’s line-up. Deletraz was recently announced as returning to the ELMS this year with the TF Sport-run Racing Team Turkey, while Kubica and Colombo are yet to reveal their racing programmes for 2023.
