(AP) — The National Weather Service extended a flood watch through Sunday evening for areas of eastern Kentucky ravaged by high water more than a week ago and said there's a threat of thunderstorms in the region for much of the coming week. There's a “persistent threat of thunderstorms” through Thursday that could produce heavy rain and cause flash flooding “especially if multiple storms pass over the same area,” the weather service in Jackson said. The forecast includes Monday, when President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden are scheduled to join Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and his wife, Britainy, at a Federal Emergency Management Agency State Disaster Recovery Center in eastern Kentucky to survey the damage and meet with those affected. The biggest concern is the possibility of slow-moving storms on Tuesday and … [Read more...] about More storms forecasted for flood-ravaged eastern Kentucky

Two prominent men died on the Titanic – were they secretly a couple?
Let's be clear up front: No one knows for sure whether Archibald Butt and Francis Davis Millet were in a romantic relationship. In the times and society in which they lived, for such a thing to become known would have meant ruin. Here's what we do know. Butt never married. Millet was estranged from his wife and had a previous relationship with a man. Butt and Millet lived together in a mansion in Washington's tony Georgetown neighborhood, where they threw parties for the city's elite - including Butt's boss, President William Howard Taft. And in the weeks before they died on the Titanic, they were vacationing together in Europe. "The enduring partnership of Butt and Millet was an early case of 'Don't ask, don't tell,' " historian Richard Davenport-Hines wrote in 2012, referring to the policy that once required gay members of the military to keep their sexuality secret. A National Park Service page for the White House memorial fountain in their honor says they were "widely … [Read more...] about Two prominent men died on the Titanic – were they secretly a couple?
Florida prosecutor vows to fight Gov. DeSantis suspension
ST. PETERSURG, Fla. (AP) — A Florida prosecutor vowed Sunday to fight his suspension from office by Gov. Ron DeSantis over his promise not to enforce the state's 15-week abortion ban and support for gender transition treatments for minors. Andrew Warren, a Democrat suspended last week from his twice-elected post as state attorney in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, said in a Facebook video message and news release Sunday he plans a “vigorous defense” by his legal team but did not give specifics. “I'm not going down without a fight,” Warren said on the video. “I refuse to let this man trample on your freedoms to speak your mind, to make your own health care decisions, and to have your vote count.” Warren was suspended Thursday by DeSantis, a Republican seeking re-election in November and potential 2024 presidential candidate, who cited neglect of duty and other alleged violations. The governor contended that's because Warren signed statements with dozens of other … [Read more...] about Florida prosecutor vows to fight Gov. DeSantis suspension
Crypto finds a bright spot in a stormy summer: Congress
WASHINGTON - It's been an ugly summer for the cryptocurrency industry everywhere but on Capitol Hill. Despite a pileup of a bad news - layoffs at major companies, ongoing hacks, and the collapse of several high-profile crypto projects that have devastated Main Street investors - the sector is on a hot streak in Congress. In just the last two weeks, a bipartisan group of senators unveiled a proposal to hand oversight of cryptocurrency spot markets to the Commodity Futures Trading Association, the third bipartisan bill since April that would codify a leading role for the industry's preferred regulator. Sens. Patrick Toomey, R-Pa., and Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., teamed up to pitch exempting crypto used for everyday purchases, like buying a sandwich, from capital gains taxes. And that pair, along with Sens. Mark Warner, D-Va., and Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., proposed limiting the reach of a provision signed into law last year that tightened tax reporting requirements on crypto … [Read more...] about Crypto finds a bright spot in a stormy summer: Congress
Qatar MotoGP: Bastianini tops FP3 to push Quartararo into Q1
Listen to this article With FP3 being run in the daylight in windier and dustier conditions than Friday, combined time improvements were few and far between on Saturday afternoon. Friday pacesetter Alex Rins on the Suzuki set the early pace in the session with a 1m55.562s, before Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro took over with a 1m55.016s. Rins would return to the top of the order with a 1m54.803s, and the 2022 Suzuki continues to look like a weapon following a strong pre-season and opening day to the campaign. Reigning world champion Quartararo took over top spot with a 1m54.794s on his factory Yamaha with just under 20 minutes to go. Fellow Frenchman Johann Zarco on the Pramac Ducati – which is running the full 2022-spec engine and not the hybrid 2021/2022 version the factory team duo are using – edged ahead with a 1m54.441s. This lap was an improvement on his best from Friday, though still only kept him in 16th on the combined order and out of a Q2 spot. Fabio … [Read more...] about Qatar MotoGP: Bastianini tops FP3 to push Quartararo into Q1
Sergio Perez’s assessment of his ‘7/10’ season so far with Red Bull
Sergio Perez has been looking back at his season so far and highlighted the Monaco Grand Prix as the highlight of his “7/10” campaign. Now in his second season with Red Bull, the Mexican seems to have improved his understanding of the car and has 63 more points this campaign than he did after the same number of races in 2021. Yet there is a feeling of what could have been currently hanging over Perez. Following his maiden win around the streets of Monaco, there was a sense that Perez, rather than Charles Leclerc, would provide the most realistic challenge to Max Verstappen’s chances of retaining the Drivers’ Championship. But his hopes faded away and at the same rate Verstappen’s performances improved, Perez’s declined. Since the Monaco Grand Prix, he has as many podium finishes as he does DNFs and has finished outside out of the top three in the last two races. Perez, who was ranked sixth on our top 10 drivers of the season so far , was asked by his team to score his season … [Read more...] about Sergio Perez’s assessment of his ‘7/10’ season so far with Red Bull
Mercedes went with more daring tyre set-up as George Russell took pole
Mercedes decided to go out of their comfort zone with tyre preparation in Hungary, and pole for George Russell followed. The Silver Arrows, without a pole or victory to that point in 2022, arrived at the Hungarian Grand Prix with many once again tipping them for a strong result, Lewis Hamilton an eight-time winner at the Hungaroring. However, the race weekend did not get off to a very competitive start, with the wet conditions of FP3 dropping Mercedes even further off the pace. Mercedes’ experiments with setup had not paid off, but as their trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin humorously put it to Auto Motor und Sport , “at least we learned what not to do”. Despite the funny intent, the statement rang true, as Mercedes went into qualifying and thrived on a track that was now dry. But, few expected Russell to do what he did as on his final flying lap, the Brit snatching pole for the Hungarian Grand Prix, the first pole position of his Formula 1 career. … [Read more...] about Mercedes went with more daring tyre set-up as George Russell took pole
1st sea turtle nest found on Mississippi beach since 2018
PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. (AP) — Beach crews have found the first sea turtle nest on the Mississippi mainland in four years. A Harrison County Sand Beach crew that was cleaning up found what appeared to be turtle tracks just east of the Pass Christian Harbor, officials said. They protected the area and called the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport, which followed the tracks to a nesting site that is now marked off with stakes and tape. The eggs likely belong to a protected loggerhead sea turtle or an even rarer Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, which is the most critically endangered species of sea turtle, said Moby Solangi, president of the marine studies group. The exact species of turtle won't be known until the eggs hatch in 50 to 60 days. Only about 1 in 10,000 sea turtle eggs reach adulthood. Turtles lay between 60 to 100 eggs in a nest and have multiple nests during a season, Solangi told The Sun Herald in Biloxi. This is the first sea turtle nest on mainland … [Read more...] about 1st sea turtle nest found on Mississippi beach since 2018
4 riding in golf cart killed in crash at Texas intersection
GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — Four people riding in a golf cart were killed — including two juveniles — when an allegedly intoxicated man driving an SUV ran a stop sign at an intersection in Southeast Texas, police said. Miguel Espinoza, 45, has been charged with four counts of intoxication manslaughter in the crash about 11:30 p.m. Saturday in Galveston, roughly 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast of Houston, police said. Espinoza was being held in Galveston County jail Sunday on $400,000 bond, police said. Jail records did not list an attorney for him. Galveston police Sgt. Derek Gaspard said that after the SUV failed to stop, it struck a pickup truck, which then crashed into the golf cart that had six people aboard. He said that the golf cart and pickup were traveling in opposite directions through the intersection on a street that did not have a stop sign. Police said the adult driver of the golf cart was pronounced dead at the scene while a woman and two juveniles on the golf … [Read more...] about 4 riding in golf cart killed in crash at Texas intersection
