Part-Chinese hyper car maker Apollo is said to enlist the engineering genius of HWA AG, a German motorsport team to construct an outrageous track car set to boast intense ‘90s GT1 pedigree. It’s called the Intensa Emozione (IE), is promised to deliver around 769 hp (573 kW) and only ten of them will be made. HWA AG is the team behind Mercedes CLK-GTR; a racer that dominated the GT1 series back in the 1990s. The company was once closely associated with AMG, planted in the GT1 and DTM departments. And now Apollo is teaming up with these racing experts to build their carbon-fibre V12 batmobile. The game marks 30 years of DTM racing. Mercedes has announced that after 30 years it will leave Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters at the end of 2018, and it's saying auf wiedersehen with a retro video game and contest. Mercedes has been an anchor constructor for DTM for three decades, and in the process created legendary race cars such as the 190E 2.5 16 Evo II and the CLK DTM, along with their corresponding street-legal homologation specials. To mark 30 years of racing, the company has released an online video game called, simply, Retro Game. Its graphics recall the 8-bit games of the original Nintendo era such as Rad Racer. The object of the game is to drive what appears to be a Mercedes CLK DTM race car, trying to achieve the highest score within the allotted time. Collecting Mercedes-Benz logos will earn points and give your car a speed boost. Hit the other cars, which appear to be Audis, and they will slow you down as you lose points. Every day you play the game, your email … [Read more...] about Mercedes releases retro DTM racing game
One of the rarest and most exclusive Mercedes-Benz models in recent history will be auctioned off May 19th at Silverstone Circuit, and we suspect it won’t have a hard time finding a home. The car in question is a one of 25 UK RHD Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series, expected to fetch anywhere between £110,000 and £125,000, which in U.S. dollars amounts to somewhere between $157,200 and $178,631. According to Silverstone Auctions classic car specialist, Harry Whale, the CLK63 AMG Black is one of the “most desirable high performance modern classics on the market.” So just how special is this car? Well, aside from being one of only 25 units to be built in right-hand drive, this particular CLK63 AMG Black Series was also one of the very last models to come off the production line in 2008, wearing a shiny shade of Iridium Metallic Silver. Power comes from a 6.2-liter V8 engine, producing 507 PS (500 HP). According to its impeccable service history, it has only … [Read more...] about Low-Mileage Mercedes CLK63 Black Series Getting Auctioned Off
It's always fascinating to see how a manufacturer turns a triumphant season in motorsport to its advantage. The old adage of 'win of Sunday, sell on Monday' isn't always an easy to pull off when you've been supplying championship-winning Formula 1 engines, but are best known for hatchbacks and people carriers (see Espace F1 for Renault's enterprising solution). Even when the synergies do suggest themselves, the dots aren't necessarily joined up with much conviction. Citroen and Volkswagen, for example, spent the last ten years politely sharing domination of the WRC with nothing more to show for it in the showroom than a lacklustre Polo GTI and a so-so DS3. Of course, when carmakers do get it right, the results tend to be memorable. Typically (though not always) this occurs when they resolve to throw even more money, power and components at a road car already jam-packed with all three. Mercedes-AMG has made this kind of endeavour a speciality, and did not miss the opportunity in … [Read more...] about CLK DTM AMG: Showpiece of the Week
The Mercedes CLK DTM AMG is one of the greatest cars ever made by AMG. Built to celebrate the CLK DTM’s championship win in 2003 with Bernd Schneider, AMG produced 100 examples of the coupe version and later on, in 2007, 80 units of the cabrio version. A coupe version is for sale at a luxury british dealer for 275,000 pounds (aprox. 315,000 euro). The street version of the Mercedes CLK DTM AMG features a de-tuned version of the SLS AMG’s 5.4-litre engine, racing-inspired suspension and a luxurious interior. The famous AMG 5.4 litre V8 was adapted for the street and it has new pistons, valve gear, crankcase, cooling system, exhaust, supercharger, while the huge power of 582 HP is delivered to the rear wheels through a five speed automatic gearbox 5G-Tronic Speedshift. The car reaches 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 320 km/h. Step inside and you are greeted with stunning one piece carbon fibre bucket seats, oval … [Read more...] about Mercedes CLK DTM AMG for sale at 275,000 pounds
Tweet TweetWhile there is a new Mercedes CLK out and about, a new Mercedes CLK Black Series isn’t exactly available. This is why RENNtech has decided to give the older one a serious treat in preparation for its send off. Among other offerings from the Americans, the AMG Black gets a new aerodynamic kit to help it stick to the ground as best possible. There’s just one thing, like the CLK 63 AMG Black, the RENNtech aero kit doesn’t tell the entire story in its spec sheet list. With RENNtech’s additions we find that all components have been properly researched into offering seamless applicability and fittings to the original body work. Apart from looking good and not falling off the kit is said to offer improvements in vehicle performance and handling. That’s all lovely, but we should speak about what comes included in the price. Speaking of which, the entire RENNtech setup will cost you a fiver under $6500. For that sort of money you get three things that … [Read more...] about RENNtech update the Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG Black

If you don’t know what the CLK DTM AMG actually is, you might easily dismiss it as just a limited edition of Merc’s compact coupe with pumped-up arches and big rims. Well, for starters it’s more powerful than a Black Series, with 582hp and 800Nm (590lb-ft) of torque from a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 and a 0-60mph (0-96km/h) sprint in 3.6 seconds, and it’s faster than some modern AMGs. Moreover, it was aimed to be a homologation special for Merc’s German Touring Car Championship contender. As such, the company built just 100 units for the Coupe (and 60 convertibles the next year), of which only 40 were right-hand drive models imported to the UK, so it’s rarer than a McLaren F1. Thus, it has all of the ingredients that make it a collector’s item, and such cars don’t pop up for sale that often. Whenever they do, though, they change hands for six-digit sums, and this particular RHD example is estimated to fetch £180,000-£220,000 … [Read more...] about How Much Would You Pay For A Barely-Driven Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM?
It’s on again – less than six months ago we put the 2018 Kia Stinger 330Si up against the Aussie-built 2018 Holden Commodore SS-V Redline, and the results were surprising. In that test, the Kia Stinger blew us away with its performance and standard level of equipment. So much so that we gave it the win by a nose over the Australian favourite. Fast-forward to today and it’s the same test, but with a very, very different Commodore. This Holden Commodore is no longer built in Australia, it’s now built in Germany, nor is the Commodore rear-wheel drive, it’s now all-wheel drive. Along the way it has also lost two cylinders, but gained a stack of standard equipment. The other big difference in this test is that the Kia Stinger is ours. We bought this one late last year for full price and we’ve stuck almost 11,000km on the clock since taking delivery. Why does any of that matter? Well, some of you thought that maybe the Stinger we tested had a special … [Read more...] about 2018 Kia Stinger 330Si v Holden Commodore VXR comparison
The California Highway Patrol man parked across the width of Spunky Canyon Road wouldn’t have needed a radar gun to clock my approach speed. He’d have heard the hard-wrung AMG V8 echoing up the canyon from some miles away, leaving time aplenty to finish his Dunkin’ Donuts and manoeuvre his Crown Vic to block my only escape route. All he had to do was wait. The V8 that had just incriminated me in such spectacular fashion was voted by you as one of the greatest of the last decade. It’s not hard to see why - AMG’s first ground-up engine embodies all of its expertise and character in 6.2 litres of high-revving, naturally-aspirated wonder. Never did it sound as good as it did in the CLK63 Black Series - this badass version of the CLK63 permitted the full vocal range of the F1 Safety Car that inspired it. And it all came together so beautifully a few years ago on a fabulous stretch of tarmac called - really - Spunky Canyon Road. LA was a good place to launch … [Read more...] about Driving A CLK Black Series Up ‘Spunky Canyon’ Is As Amazing As It Sounds
