Oscar Piastri recently took in his first official day of work at the McLaren Technology Centre, and the team released a behind-the-scenes video of what he got up to. The young Australian rookie arrived to have been given his pass to enter the team’s factory, as well as a new company car – a McLaren Artura, prices of which start from £185,000 with an engine capable of 671bhp and a top speed north of 200mph. Greeting him upon entry to the MTC was a statue of team founder, Bruce McLaren, and although he came from New Zealand with Piastri a near neighbour Down Under, he’s ready for the journey to begin. He said: “60th year of racing here at McLaren this year. So for me, it’s pretty special to be starting my journey with McLaren in such a historic year. I won’t hold the fact that he was a Kiwi against him, but that’s okay…” PlanetF1.com recommends Daniel Ricciardo discusses the ‘panic’ he felt after learning of McLaren axe Max Verstappen corrects Helmut Marko’s ‘absurd’ claim … [Read more...] about Watch: Oscar Piastri’s first day: McLaren Artura and a podium tease from Zak Brown

Listen to this article TOP FUEL Brown claimed his 59th career victory, and fifth of the season, with a 3.763-second pass at 319.29 mph in his dragster to defeat Doug Kalitta and his Mac Tools machine, 3.811 at 320.28. It is Brown’s second consecutive win at the NHRA Carolina Nationals, the opening event of the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship. “I’m dreaming right now, someone needs to come and pinch me,” Brown said. “This is the way you want to start the Countdown off. Qualifying didn’t go the way we wanted it. We just kept digging. That was the key. The track was the hottest that we have had all year long. We knew it was going to be tricky. We navigated down it and we did what we had to do.” Before picking up the victory over Kalitta, Brown faced down Clay Millican, Brittany Force, and Pat Dakin, and thus remains on top of the points with Kalitta in second. He is second in the points trailing Capps by only 24 points. Johnson beat Cruz Pedregon, Mike Smith and Jack Beckman en route to his fifth final round of the season. “You want to have a strong start in the Countdown; we knew that going into it,” said Johnson Jr. “I said I’d be happy with four more runner-ups, but when you look in the other lane and it’s Capps, who’s leading the points, it’s a must-win. You’ve got to gain some ground.” Jack Beckman is third in points and is followed by Hagan in fourth, reigning world champ … [Read more...] about Johnson Jr., Brown, Nobile, Krawiec grab wins in Maple Grove

Brown and Hagan conquer Texas

October 17, 2016 by www.motorsport.com Leave a Comment

Listen to this article TOP FUEL Antron Brown sprinted to a 3.744-second pass at 321.12 mph in his Matco Tools dragster to defeat Steve Torrence’s 3.750 at 323.12 in his Capco Contractors dragster. This is Brown’s 61st career win, seventh of the season and third at the Texas Motorplex, and it extended his lead over second-place Doug Kalitta by 150 points. Brown outlasted Chris Karamesines, Kalitta and J.R. Todd in the earlier rounds. “We had a great drag race out there,” said two-time and reigning world champion Brown. “It could’ve gone either way. We were both close on the tree, but we snuck one out there. “Nobody is blowing people out anymore,” he observed. “The only way you win is by inches. To win that final was monumental for our team. We needed to do that. We’re still not done working yet.” Torrence raced past Clay Millican, Leah Pritchett and Shawn Langdon en route to his seventh final round appearance of the season. His runner-up finish bumped Torrence up to … [Read more...] about Brown and Hagan conquer Texas

Brown trying not to think of a third title

October 17, 2016 by www.motorsport.com Leave a Comment

Listen to this article Racers have to be tough to win championships. Putting together a season-long accumulation of pole positions, victories and high points-producing finishes is not for the weak. But that doesn’t mean a champion can’t be imbued with kindness, generosity of spirit and a love of life. Take, for instance, Antron Brown, who has a heady lead in NHRA’s Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship. The reigning Top Fuel champion scored four wins in the regular 18-race season this year, and headed the points going into the Countdown (which is basically the NHRA’s equivalent of NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup). Remarkably, with four of these six playoff races now done, Brown has added three more victories. He beat his current closest opponent, Doug Kalitta, at the first Countdown race at Charlotte, then took his 60th career NHRA win (16 of which were scored on Pro Stock Motorcycles) in the cold of Reading, PA. two weeks later. Last weekend, the … [Read more...] about Brown trying not to think of a third title

F1 embraces the return of Ford – but is its major US rival welcome too? · RaceFans

Michael Andretti’s hopes of gaining a place on the Formula 1 grid appear to have been boosted twice in the past 24 hours. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free First the FIA formally opened its process for new teams to apply to compete in the world championship. But by no means does this guarantee an application from Andretti will be accepted. Indeed, following pushback from F1 and most of the existing teams who don’t want to share the sport’s spoils with new entrants, the FIA made it clear that even if it approves a bid the commercial arm of the sport can block it. “Existing F1 teams will be given priority over new applicants,” it stated. “In the event that no applicant is considered suitable by the FIA and/or by the F1 commercial rights holder, no new F1 team(s) will be selected.” But at least the wheels are turning. Merely getting the FIA to consider its case will be an achievement for Andretti, as new entries are only admitted to F1 periodically. February 4, 2023 by www.planetf1.com Leave a Comment

An analysis into the representation of each team on Sky Sports’ broadcast has shown Christian Horner appeared more than double that of Toto Wolff. To those familiar with Sky’s offering, this stat should come as no surprise given Horner’s role at not only one of the top teams but also one that was involved in plenty of memorable moments throughout 2022. As the provider of not just the British feed but also one that is broadcast in the US via ESPN, Sky is often seen as the main broadcaster of the global sport and as such, those featured on the coverage are presented to a large audience. Motorsportbroadcasting.com has taken a deeper look into the British broadcaster’s coverage to determine which teams and individuals are appearing more than others. As part of their study, they solely focused on Sky’s offerings which are prepared in advance including their build-up to each qualifying, sprint, and race session during 2022. Sebastian Vettel on ‘nonsense’ FIA clampdown, wants drivers to show ‘courage’ against it

February 4, 2023 by www.planetf1.com Leave a Comment

Sebastian Vettel has branded new FIA regulations limiting drivers’ right to freedom of speech on the grid as “nonsense”, and he hopes to see his former colleagues show “courage” against the governing body. Vettel and Lewis Hamilton in particular have been two of the key voices in speaking out for causes important to them in a public forum, with both calling for equality for the LGBTQ+ community when Formula 1 has visited countries where their rights are limited, sporting rainbow-coloured helmets in solidarity. Vettel was also among the first to join Hamilton in ‘taking the knee’ before races in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, with the former Ferrari and Red Bull driver also wearing different shirts to point to climate change issues around the world. But with the four-time World Champion having retired, he will not have the opportunity to rail against the new rule brought in by the governing body which prohibits drivers making statements of a political or religious … [Read more...] about Sebastian Vettel on ‘nonsense’ FIA clampdown, wants drivers to show ‘courage’ against it
