Astronomers recently spotted an unusual glowing object swirling in the night sky over Maunakea, Hawaii and have the video to prove it. The Subaru Telescope on Maunakea, which is operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) and National Institutes of Natural Sciences, recently captured a "mysterious flying spiral" above the island chain in the early morning hours of Jan. 18. "It was a really unusual view," astronomers wrote in a video on the telescope's YouTube channel. In the footage, a bright blue spinning spiral suddenly appears among stars and various satellites over the Aloha State telescope. "At first it was just a small dot at the left center of the view," the caption reads. "Then it ejected an arc-like feature. It became slightly larger. A bright dot appeared in the blob, then it grew into a spiral." On Jan 18, 2023 (HST), the Subaru-Asahi Star Camera captured a mysterious flying spiral over Maunakea, Hawai`i. The spiral seems to be related to … [Read more...] about Astronomers film bizarre spiral glowing above Hawaii’s night sky

Bank of England rate hike says ‘too soon to declare victory’
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 15 LONDON (AP) — The Bank of England announced another “forceful” increase in interest rates Thursday, saying it was too soon to declare victory against inflation that has slowed slightly but is still fueling a cost-of-living crisis, public-sector strikes and fears of recession. The bank raised its key rate by half a percentage point, to 4%, resisting the temptation to follow the U.S. Federal Reserve in easing its response to the crisis. The British central bank has approved four straight increases of a half-point or more since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine triggered sharp rises in food and energy prices. “We have done a lot on rates already … but it is too soon to declare victory just yet,” bank Gov. Andrew Bailey said at a news conference. “Inflationary pressures are still there … and we need to be absolutely sure … [Read more...] about Bank of England rate hike says ‘too soon to declare victory’

UK to probe whether 1998 Omagh bomb could have been stopped
LONDON (AP) — The U.K. government said Thursday it will hold a public inquiry into whether the deadliest bombing in Northern Ireland’s decades of violence could have been prevented. Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris announced an independent probe of the 1998 car bombing in the town of Omagh that killed 29 people, including a woman pregnant with twins, and wounded hundreds more. An Irish Republican Army dissident group, the Real IRA, claimed responsibility. A court ordered the government to investigate in response to a legal challenge by Michael Gallagher, whose son Aiden was killed by the 225-kilogram (500-pound) bomb. Gallagher alleges that intelligence failings allowed a “preventable atrocity” to occur. Heaton-Harris said the inquiry "will focus specifically on the four grounds which the court held as giving rise to plausible arguments that the bombing could have been prevented,” including whether security services had advance intelligence of the bomb. It will … [Read more...] about UK to probe whether 1998 Omagh bomb could have been stopped

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 17 MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday attended commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi forces in the battle of Stalingrad, a long and grueling fight that resonates in the current conflict in Ukraine. Putin laid a wreath at the eternal flame of the memorial complex to the fallen Red Army soldiers in Volgograd, the current name of the city, which stretches along the western bank of the Volga River. The memorial is dominated by an 85-meter (279-foot) sculpture of a sword-wielding woman, Europe's tallest statue. The Russian leader is set to speak at a memorial event and have a meeting with activists later in the day. The city was renamed in 1961 as part of the Soviet Union’s rejection of dictator Joseph Stalin’s personality cult. But the name … [Read more...] about Putin commemorates Stalingrad battle, echoing Ukraine fight
How hard seltzers are holding up the long-awaited expansion of Connecticut’s bottle return program
Frustrations over Connecticut’s roll out of a long-awaited expansion to the “Bottle Bill” that increases the number of beverages eligible for a deposit have spilled over into a public fight over the re-nomination of one of Gov. Ned Lamont’s cabinet secretaries, and sent top Democrats rushing to smooth over tensions with new legislation clarifying the nearly two-year-old law. The state’s commissioner of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Katie Dykes, is facing an unusual delay in the typical formality of having lawmakers sign off on a governor’s cabinet appointments, particularly those who are already in the position of leading an agency. While House leaders said this week that they ultimately expect to confirm Dykes, they warned that Republican anger over what they describe as a broken agreement to exclude wine-and-spirit-based seltzers from a large expansion of the state’s container redemption return program — better known as the Bottle Bill — could spark … [Read more...] about How hard seltzers are holding up the long-awaited expansion of Connecticut’s bottle return program
Alfa Romeo Tonale Production Increasing To Meet Strong Demand
Deliveries of the Alfa Romeo Tonale aren’t supposed to start in the United States until the second quarter of this year but the crossover is already enjoying very strong demand. So much so that the automaker is reportedly adding a second shift to its Pomigliano factory in Italy where the Tonal is produced. In the same plant, Stellantis also builds the Fiat Panda and the manufacturer is cutting a shift from the production of the small car. Soon, the same assembly line will also become responsible for the Dodge Hornet , which is essentially a rebadged version of the Tonale. The Italian crossover is currently sold in Europe and Japan, and will soon arrive on US shores where it has a starting price of $42,995 for the entry-level Sprint trim. FIA officially open applications for new F1 teams and reveal new requirements
The FIA has officially announced the opening of its application process for new “entities with a serious intent to enter Formula 1”, to join the grid in the future. Following on from FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem saying a new ‘expressions of interest’ process will take place for prospective new teams to stake their claim to join Formula 1, the governing body has now opened its application window to do so. The FIA say the process for judging applications will involve “thorough due diligence”, including the “technical capabilities and resources of the applicant team, the ability of the team to raise and maintain sufficient funding to allow participation in the Championship at a competitive level and the team’s experience and human resources.” Alongside this, prospective teams will also have to show how they are able to commit to Formula 1’s sustainability target of net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 as another condition of entry, in order to meet the “mutual aims” of … [Read more...] about FIA officially open applications for new F1 teams and reveal new requirements
What is included on the FIA list of requirements for new Formula 1 entrants?
The FIA has announced the opening of its application process for prospective new Formula 1 teams, and they have set out their requirements for what they want from their applicants. In an accompanying document with their announcement of the opening of expressions of interest, motorsport’s governing body revealed in more detail what prospective entrants are expected to provide in the application process. Along with a total $300,000 application fee, the governing body is asking for several relevant documents surrounding the people running the team itself, including details about the company, the owner, and the request to sign a non-disclosure agreement about the application process itself while it is ongoing. The FIA say a full list of requirements will be sent to prospective teams once expressions of interest have been filed, and Liberty Media, Formula 1’s commercial rights holder, may add criteria of their own as the application process unfolds. But as for now, among the FIA’s … [Read more...] about What is included on the FIA list of requirements for new Formula 1 entrants?
