50 years after ‘Jaws,’ a new Houston exhibit tells the truth about sharks
Even among apex predators, not every animal deserves an exclamation point. Sharks definitely do. These mysterious, fascinating creatures, not nearly as deadly to humans as they’re made out to be, get a big one in Sharks! The Meg, The Monsters & The Myths , a new exhibit opening May 26 at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. If they so choose, visitors can survey the ocean from a hammerhead’s POV, climb inside a shark cage, or play a few rounds of Fact vs. Fiction, shark edition. “We’ve got stuff for little kids to big kids—and by big kids, I mean grownups,” says the exhibit’s curator, HMNS Vice President for Education Nicole Temple. “I think that most people can come in here and spend quite a bit of time and find something that is appealing to them. Plus, you get fossil shark teeth, and you can touch live sharks.” There are fascinating stories from all over the animal kingdom, but it’s awfully hard to beat sharks—the cartilaginous subclass of fishes that comprises … [Read more...] about 50 years after ‘Jaws,’ a new Houston exhibit tells the truth about sharks

In the early 1980s, as a young curator at the Metropolitan Art Museum, Gary Tinterow helped oversee a show that featured Impressionist paintings from the collection of self-made New York businessman Henry Pearlman. Now in his tenth year as director of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston , Tinterow is once again overseeing an exhibit focused on the Pearlman Collection—this time juxtaposed with paintings from the MFAH's own permanent collection. The show, titled Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Masterpieces from the Pearlman Foundation , opened May 21 and features works from Gauguin, Degas, Cézanne, and Van Gogh, plus lesser-known artists collected by Pearlman during his lifetime. "It's exciting to welcome them back into my life," Tinterow said during a media preview of the exhibit before the official public opening. "The works look even better now because we've learned so much more about them in the past 40 years." This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans aren’t simply handing C.J. Stroud the starting job despite drafting the quarterback second overall in this year’s draft. The Ohio State star worked with the second-team offense Tuesday while last year’s starter Davis Mills ran with the starters. “This team has been very accepting of me, very honest and very transparent and what I love about it is nothing has been given to me,” Stroud said. “I have to earn everything. Which I love. It’s been like that my whole career.” New coach DeMeco Ryans said they’re a long way from deciding who will line up under center in Houston’s opener Sept. 10 at Baltimore. “The process with all our players is to come out and improve and get better each day,” Ryans said. “And when the fall comes that’s when we’ll talk about starters and… who are the best 11 men to go out there and … [Read more...] about No. 2 pick Stroud competing for starting job with Houston Texans

The struggle to get sober in Houston’s demanding restaurant scene
This article contains content that may be triggering for some people. Sasha Grumman 's first taste of alcohol was on Thanksgiving 1998. Texas legislature passes bills aimed at Harris County elections
Texas lawmakers approved two bills Tuesday aimed at Harris County elections that would give state Republicans the power to remove the county's elections administrator and allow the Texas secretary of state to oust local elections officials for "good cause" after an election complaint is filed. The bills apply to counties with more than 3.5 or 4 million people, respectively; Harris is the only county in the state that meets those criteria. Under Senate Bill 1933 , written by Sen. Paul Bettencourt (R-Houston), Secretary of State Jane Nelson—who was appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott—can remove a local official after conducting an investigation prompted by "a recurring pattern of problems with election administration." Examples of recurring issues include a malfunctioning voting system that stops a person from casting a vote, misconduct in distributing election supplies and errors in counting results that would have impacted the outcome of an election, among others. The House … [Read more...] about Texas legislature passes bills aimed at Harris County elections
