Houston is finally home to a legal weed dispensary, but don't get too excited just yet — it's reserved for those with medical prescriptions, which can only be given to individuals with specific ailments. So, who can land a prescription? Texas Original, a chain of medical marijuana dispensaries across Texas, opened at 1714 Houston Ave. this week, offering people with prescriptions an easier way to obtain an array of legal marijuana-laced products, according to ReNew Houston's Evan MacDonald . The company is the first of its kind in the Bayou City and the first Texas Original storefront open five days a week, offering next-day pickup for customers. The dispensary is strictly for those authorized under the Lone Star State's Compassionate Use Program, which requires a diagnosis of a certain disease or ailment and a prescription from a doctor. The law currently only allows prescriptions for a handful of medical issues, which include: ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, autism, epilepsy, … [Read more...] about Houston’s first medical marijuana dispensary is now open in the Heights. Houston man gets life in prison after fatally shooting 3 men
HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston man has been sentenced to life in prison for shooting four men, including three who were killed, in the aftermath of a drug deal gone bad, according to prosecutors. A jury in Harris County last week found Joshua Kelsey, 37, guilty of three counts of murder before sentencing him. Prosecutors say Kelsey shot two men — one fatally — after buying heroin at a home in May 2020. A witness testified that Kelsey was angry at one of the men, Louis Hodges, for an incident the day before involving a small bag of heroin. After stealing a car belonging to one of the men, Kelsey drove to the home of a friend, Michael Miller, and fatally shot him, police said. Authorities said Kelsey blamed Miller for getting rid of a recreational vehicle that he had stored at Miller’s home. Investigators said Kelsey believed the loss of the RV led to him becoming homeless. Kelsey then to drove to the home of an acquaintance, Juan Garcia, and fatally shot him. It was unclear why … [Read more...] about Houston man gets life in prison after fatally shooting 3 men

Houston City Council approves $7.1 million in COVID funding to clear homeless encampments
Houston City Council voted Tuesday to approve a $7.1 million contract—paid in ARPA funds—for a third-party contractor that will aid the city in its ongoing push to clear homeless camps and re-home those living on the street. The contract is part of the city and Harris County’s $56 million joint homelessness initiative launched in June 2020. The collaboration involves offering subsidized housing to people living in encampments, then “decommissioning” encampment sites with police patrols and sometimes fencing. Councilwoman Amy Peck, who represents District A in northwest Houston, also called on the state of Texas to cover a portion of the city’s expenses involved in clearing encampments. “So many of these cleanups are under overpasses and I believe that the state should bear some of the responsibility in the cost of this,” Peck said during Tuesday’s council meeting. Wednesday's vote marked the latest action taken by city and county officials in their ongoing Houston-Harris … [Read more...] about Houston City Council approves $7.1 million in COVID funding to clear homeless encampments
New Houston restaurant boasts one of the largest vegan sushi menus in the country
In recent years, Houston has had quite the uptick in sushi bar openings, but few appeal to vegan diners the way Blue Sushi Sake Grill , now open at M-K-T Heights, does. The popular concept from the Nebraska-based Flagship Restaurant Group touts a total of 30 restaurants across 11 states, with Houston's M-K-T outpost serving as its 19th Blue Sushi location. Blue Sushi places a hefty spotlight on responsibly sourced seafood and has one of the largest plant-based menus in the country. For Flagship co-owners Tony Gentile and Anthony Hitchcock—Houston natives who began their friendship more than 20 years ago while at the University of Houston's Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management—it was an ideology that was important from the start. "Sustainability was something we always had a passion for," Gentile said, noting he and his corporate chef locked themselves in a room and discussed supply chain challenges until they could make it work. "We were doing the … [Read more...] about New Houston restaurant boasts one of the largest vegan sushi menus in the country
3 major roadway closures could snarl Houston traffic this weekend
Driving any weekend in Houston can be nightmarish, but a series of road closures starting Friday will be sure to stir up agitation for unsuspecting drivers. The earliest closure starts at 10 a.m. Friday in Memorial Park. Crews will be placing support beams for three trail bridges inside the park, and need to close Memorial Drive between East Memorial Loop and West Memorial Loop drives to facilitate the work. There's no easy detour, it appears. The Memorial Park Conservancy, which is ushering the work, only says drivers will be detoured around the park until the roadway opens back up Sunday. Several trails inside Memorial Park will be closed this weekend as well, including Picnic Loop, Bayou Wilds Green Trail and part of the Seymour Lieberman Trail. The rest of the park will be open. The new pedestrian bridges will eventually create a link on the Seymour Lieberman Trail, moving the path away from Memorial Drive through a more shaded and scenic portion of the park, according to … [Read more...] about 3 major roadway closures could snarl Houston traffic this weekend

A better instant noodle is going nationwide thanks to Houston- and Taiwan-based food company
Handmade sesame noodles may sound like a treat reserved for dining in or taking out, but with Sesanood instant noodle packets, the savory meal can be yours after no more than 5 to 6 minutes on the stove. The brand, which launched in January 2021, is helmed by friends YaoYao Sun and Judy Liu, who seek to bring instant sesame noodles at the forefront in the U.S. "There is not much in the way of sesame noodles in mainstream markets," explained Liu. "We are hoping Sesanood will become one of the major choices." Made with thick, sun-dried noodles and a touch of salt to assist in preserving their shelf life up to 18 months, Sesanood products are wholly vegan and much healthier than fried instant noodle alternatives. The accompanying sauce is built from 50 percent sesame paste, and packs 15 grams of plant-based protein. Though there is quite a distance between the pals now—Sun lives in Sugar Land, while Liu is in Taiwan—their fateful friendship began when both women were living in … [Read more...] about A better instant noodle is going nationwide thanks to Houston- and Taiwan-based food company
Houston Dynamo upgrading PNC Stadium in time for next season
The Houston Dynamo Football Club is making major upgrades to PNC Stadium with work beginning after the Dynamo and Dash season and scheduled to be finished in time for next season. The main features being added to the stadium are mesh seats throughout the lower seating bowl and a portion of the east side of the stadium being transformed into an air-conditioned, premium all-inclusive club area. "As I have said since my first day, one of our biggest priorities is to enhance the game day experience for our supporters," said Dynamo owner Ted Segal, who bought the team exactly a year ago . "These improvements to PNC Stadium will allow us to improve the experience for every person who walks through our gates, draw more fans to the stadium and in turn give our players a stronger home field advantage. This project will also make our facility a more active and engaged community asset that serves as a more attractive destination for additional soccer and non-soccer events."
