2019 Volkswagen Jetta Although most of the “new” in new vehicles has been focused on crossovers of late, many manufacturers are still committed to cars. And Volkswagen proves it’s one of them with the introduction of the redesigned 2019 Jetta compact sedan, due on sale in the next couple of months. Longer, taller, and wider than the outgoing model, the Jetta predictably adds interior space. It also offers more features than before – some being standard – while the starting price actually drops a bit. However, engine choices – at least for now – have been trimmed to just last year’s base powerplant: a 1.4-liter turbo, now rated at 147 horsepower and 184 lb ft of torque. Gone are the previously available 1.8- and 2.0-liter turbos that offered 170 and 210 horsepower, respectively. But the previously standard 5-speed manual has been replaced by a 6-speed, and the former 6-speed automatic has been replaced by an 8-speed. The new Jetta comes in … [Read more...] about First Spin: 2019 Volkswagen Jetta

Brown 2011 Volkswagen TDI Sportwagen listed for sale after emissions repairsEnlarge PhotoThe gentle rumble under the brown station wagon’s hood brings back memories of not too long ago as I sneak its 6-speed manual through the gears. So, too, the way it accelerates down a highway on-ramp—like warm maple syrup, the brown wagon moves substantially with just enough verve. From the driver’s seat of this 2011 VW Golf TDI SportWagen, the memories conjured up are good ones. The VW TDI engine earned accolades in the early oughts for the way it combined good power and docile manners with upward of 35 mpg no matter how you drove it. But there are reminders of the past, not the least of which is a thin line of dust coughed up through the air vents when I cycle the air conditioner.Volkswagen TDI diesel cars stored at Pontiac Silverdome (Photo by Jalopnik)Enlarge Photo That’s because the brown diesel wagon I’m driving spent last winter confined to a dusty parking … [Read more...] about 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI SportWagen driven: Fixed, but does it matter?
Over the lifetime of a car, small things can make a big difference. When it comes to fuel economy, just 1 or 2 mpg can add up to hundreds of dollars left in owners’ pockets. That may not mean much to luxury buyers, but for compact sedans that start at less than $20,000 and their owners, every dime, dollar, and drop saved counts. Our colleagues over at The Car Connection finished up their first drive review and reported that the compact sedan they tested returned 37 mpg in combined fuel economy, above the 34 mpg rating from the EPA calculators. That’s good among compact sedans with which the Volkswagen Jetta competes, and relatively frugal compared to just a few years ago. Only 10 years ago, a Jetta equipped with a 2.0-liter inline-4 was rated nearly 10 mpg lower on the combined cycle, a testament to increased efficiency, better aerodynamics, forced induction—all at a lower price. It's an SUV world now, even for traditionally car-centric Volkswagen. Its best-sellers so far this year are the new Tiguan (Car.com's 2017 Compact SUV Challenge winner) and Atlas mid-size SUV (Cars.com's Best of 2018). But compact cars still are a big part of the U.S. vehicle market and the much-improved 2019 Volkswagen Jetta sedan shows VW is serious about a bagging a bigger share. Related: 2019 VW Jetta Offers More Features for Less Money At a Volkswagen media preview, I drove the 2019 Jetta in town, on freeways and on rural highways around Durham, N.C., and found it now stacks up much better against rival compact leaders such as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. (Per company policy, Cars.com pays for its airfare and lodging at such automaker-hosted events.) The previous generation held its own for driving manners, but the 2019 now also gets up to speed with features, tech and comfort, as well as — key for this group — value. We're talking about the Volkswagen … [Read more...] about 2019 Volkswagen Jetta First Drive: Reconfigured to Take on Civic, Corolla
The 2010 Jetta Sportwagen is not as well known as the Toyota Prius. But the two vehicles have been compared. The Prius is the much talked about, industry-leading hybrid. The Jetta TDI is the increasingly popular and peppy diesel. The Prius made many of 2010 Best-of-the-Year lists and even topped some of the compilations. But the Jetta and its surprising value and impressive gas mileage ratings weren’t too far behind. In short, the Prius revolutionized the hybrid industry in the United States and the Jetta may well do the same for cleaning-burning diesel engines. A 2010 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen. The Weekly Driver Test Drive There’s no easy Northern California or San Francisco Bay Area connection to Mendocino. In either of the two major options to get to the picturesque coastal city, stretches of winding roads interrupt steady freeway driving. One route is more severe, but either journey has a reputation as unfriendly for car passengers. In other words, there’s a … [Read more...] about Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI, 2010: The Weekly Driver Car Review

Tweet TweetAs if the news on a pending recall from KIA weren’t enough, it seems that the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration have yet more word of warning for motorists in the US. The NHTSA is undergoing an investigation to establish the source of the recent number of complaints that focus on issues caused by the engine stalling of Volkswagen Jetta TDI. Until further notice the only thing we have to go on is that: “A preliminary evaluation has been opened to access the scope, frequency and potential safety consequences associated with the alleged defect.” As a result owners of the 09 VW Jetta TDI should keep track of the process and be prepare themselves for the eventuality of a recall if the situation turns out to be a manufacturer issue. … [Read more...] about NHTSA Investigation on the Jetta TDI
2018 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel Hatch. Words by Andy Lilienthal. Photos by Mercedes Lilienthal. Let's just get all this out on the table. Volkswagen was the king of diesel cars in the U.S. until this whole dieselgate thing happened. As you're likely well aware, VW was caught cheating on emissions testing in late 2015 and the whole thing resulted in a global scandal. At this moment, VW no longer offers its formerly popular TDI-powered cars in North America. As this whole debacle was going down, Chevrolet was preparing to offer its compact Cruze Sedan for sale in North America with a 1.6-liter turbodiesel engine. Chevy was essentially watching its future competition unravel before its very eyes just as it was about to bring its own diesel offering to market. I bet that was an interesting time in the GM offices. They must've known this whole VW scandal could leave a smoky, sooty taste in the mouths of potential buyers of diesel-powered vehicles, no matter what the brand. … [Read more...] about Review: 2018 Chevrolet Cruze Hatch Diesel
Volkswagen’s new 2019 Jetta boasts plenty of big changes, starting with its transition to the MQB platform that is shared with the Golf and myriad other Volkswagen Group products. The redesigned sedan gets a boost in its EPA fuel-economy ratings, with both the manual- and automatic-transmission versions now hitting the magic 40-mpg mark in the government’s highway testing (previously only the manual was rated at 40 mpg, while the automatic was 38). The combined ratings also go up, with both drivetrains achieving 34 mpg—a 1-mpg improvement for the manual-transmission car and a 2-mpg increase for the automatic.Credit the Jetta’s new transmissions, plus the addition of stop/start technology for the automatic version. Although its turbo 1.4-liter four-cylinder with 147 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque is mostly carryover, it now comes standard with a six-speed manual rather than a five-speed, and an eight-speed automatic steps in for the old six-speed. … [Read more...] about 2019 Volkswagen Jetta Hits the Big 4-0 in EPA Fuel-Economy Test
With Volkswagen’s TDIs out of the picture, the Chevrolet Cruze diesel has become a unicorn—the only manual-transmission diesel passenger car available in the United States and the only diesel passenger vehicle (crossovers and SUVs included) that sells for less than $30,000. The closest approximation is the BMW 328d xDrive wagon that starts at $46,945 and can’t be had with a stick shift. That’s what goes on the marquee. But the aluminum-block turbocharged 1.6-liter engine that powers this Cruze—making 137 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque—deserves to share the limelight. As a freshened piece of clean-and-quiet, fuel-stingy kit, it’s nonetheless a vestige of another time and place, before regulators made several big moves to favor hybrids; before downsized, direct-injected gasoline engines erased some of diesels’ mileage advantage; and before one especially noteworthy 2015 scandal. It also was conceived primarily by and for Opel, … [Read more...] about 2018 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel Hatchback Manual
