HELL, Michigan — Yes, that’s the name. But in truth this rural hamlet 40 minutes northwest of Ann Arbor is far too inviting to deserve its demonic moniker. Here you find leafy two-lanes, weathered hardware stores and laid-back pubs, hidden swimming holes, and some of the best—check that, the only—twisting, undulating driving roads amid hundreds of miles of otherwise pancake-flat farmland. On the other hand, after shaking down the long-awaited 2016 Chevrolet Camaro here, I began to think the town’s name couldn’t have been more fitting. This all-new ponycar is hot. Camaro fans and holdouts alike, prepare to throw out everything you think you know about Chevy’s two-door sport coupe. The sixth-generation version represents a paradigm shift at the model’s basic core. Previous Camaros have tended to be broad, not lean, and muscular rather than lithe. Even the outgoing, $72,000-plus Z/28—fantastic as it is—runs large. Against its … [Read more...] about 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Review

2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1, it might be wise to understand the historical significance of those three letters at the end of Chevy's retrofied muscle car. Way back in 1969 – a year some consider to be the apogee of Camaro history – the automaker built just 69 ZL1s, each powered by an aluminum-block 427-cubic-inch V8 that was otherwise unavailable in the Camaro and built specifically for drag racing. The '69 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is highly coveted by collectors, and a perfectly stunning example was auction at the 2012 Barrett-Jackson event in Scottsdale. Though this particular ZL1 saw plenty of use on the drag strip, it's been completely restored to like-new condition. We just drove the new 2012 ZL1 (full report coming soon), so we were keenly interested in seeing this one cross the auction block. The final bid came in at $410,000, putting the actual sale at $451,000.Check out our high-res image gallery of live photos above, and be sure to click past the break, where you can watch a … [Read more...] about Barrett-Jackson 2012: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 races across the auction block [w/video]
The 1LE package Chevrolet Camaros have a long history in competitive motorsports, with the 1LE package on the third and fourth generation Camaro offered as a means to make the car competitive in SCCA Showroom Stock racing. Now that the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro coupe has been unveiled, it’s time to assign at least a few brain cells to thinking about the first major spin-off, the convertible. Our artist has whipped up these renderings of what an RS-trimmed droptop would look like. The convertible should be available with the same engine trio as is the coupe, which means a 275-hp 2.0-liter turbo four; a 335-hp 3.6-liter V-6; and the stonking 455-hp 6.2-liter LT1 V-8. In the coupe, any engine can be paired with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic, and that should be the case here, too. Also like the fixed-roof car, the convertible will feature GM’s excellent Alpha architecture, a chassis with adjustable drive modes, active magnetic shocks on SS models, an optional dual-mode exhaust, and significantly improved interior materials. The difference, of course, is the droppable top, the better to hear the various exhaust notes; we already know … [Read more...] about FIRST LOOK: 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible!
Ever wonder just how dimensionally similar—or different—today’s rides are compared to those of the past? It’s always on our minds, as it seems like every new-car reveal is accompanied by detailed lists of where inches or pounds were added relative to the previous iteration. Few modern cars manage to shrug off this generation-over-generation inflation; the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata comes to mind, being dimensionally smaller than before. The current-generation Nissan Z also shrank when its name changed from 350Z to 370Z. Chevrolet has heard the siren call, too, and it bucked industry trend and cut down the sixth-generation Camaro‘s footprint. That got us thinking: What about the Camaro’s dimensional changes throughout every generation? So we broke out the rulers. Sixth Generation: 2016 Chevrolet Camaro (2016–)The 2016 Camaro, having moved onto General Motors’ excellent rear-drive Alpha platform, has shrunk ever so slightly. Compared to … [Read more...] about The Chevrolet Camaro Hasn’t Grown as Much Since 1967 as You Might Think
At Car and Driver, we care about numbers, what with our storied history of testing and publishing performance data, curb weights, and more on hundreds of cars per year. So our empirical selves can appreciate Chevrolet’s latest data dump on the sixth-generation Camaro, which outlines the company’s performance estimates for the 2016 Camaro coupe with every transmission and engine combination. Oh, and the roughly 200-pound weight savings Chevy touted at the Camaro’s initial reveal? As it turns out, that was a conservative estimate. Read on for a full breakdown, but remember—these are only Chevy’s estimates. We will endeavor to verify them with, you guessed it, our very own tests: AccelerationThe 2016 Camaro will come standard with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four with 275 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. According to Chevy, that will be good for a 5.4-second zero-to-60-mph time with the manual transmission and 5.5 with the automatic. With either … [Read more...] about 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Performance Estimates and More Detailed, Curb Weights Revealed!
More than five million Camaros have been sold over the better part of six decades, a feat to which Chevrolet can credit, at least in part, a generous marketing budget. With the sixth-gen car now in the public domain—you can read all about it here—we decided the time was right to gather some of our favorite Camaro print advertisements from throughout the car’s history. From fashion to typefaces and photography to design, it’s clear that many things beyond the Camaro have evolved significantly since 1967. Click/tap any of the images to enlarge, all the better to read some of the fantastic—or not-so-fantastic—ad copy.Note that during the fourth and, especially, the fifth generations, General Motors focused a lot less on print advertising in favor of stuff like “Bumblebee” of Transformers fame, and so those cars aren’t as well represented here. Also, vintage ads are way cooler. Now, to … [Read more...] about Mad ’Maro: 45 of the Coolest Chevrolet Camaro Ads of All Time

“Do you want to get in and out of your car easily and do you want to be able to back out of a tight parking spot?” Ford Mustang buyer and former Chevrolet Camaro shopper John Oglesby wrote to Car And Driver for its September 2016 issue. “If so, you need the Mustang.”John Oglesby is truly representative of the market as a whole. After holding its position as the top dog in the segment for five years, the Chevrolet Camaro predictably lost its title to the Ford Mustang in 2015, the year of an all-new Mustang; the last year for the now-departed fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro.2016 hosted the launch of an all-new Chevrolet Camaro, but a return to sales leadership wasn’t in the cards. Not at any point since the nameplate’s 2009 return has the Camaro sold so poorly. Year-over-year, U.S. Camaro volume is down 15 percent compared with 2015, the Camaro’s previous worst year since returning.Poor visibility, a premium price point, and styling that … [Read more...] about With Chevrolet Camaro Sales Plunging, Camaro Inventory Has Ballooned To A 129-Day Supply
