One of swimming's oldest records toppled Saturday courtesy of one of its youngest stars, as 17-year-old Romanian swimmer David Popovici bested César Cielo's 13-year-old 100-meter men's freestyle mark at the European Aquatics Championship in Rome. Popovici's time of 46.86 eclipsed the former event record by 0.05 seconds, and he beat Saturday's second-fastest competitor, Kristóf Milák, by 0.61. "It felt great, and it's very special to break this record which was set here in 2009 by César Cielo," Popovici said via the Associated Press. Though announcers declared Popovici the odds-on favorite entering Saturday's final, his win hardly appeared inevitable at the halfway mark of the race, as he trailed France's Maxime Grousset with 50 meters remaining. Popovici ultimately pulled ahead with a second-half surge, measured at a 24.12 split. Cielo, the previous record-holder, complimented Popovici's performance on Twitter, declaring that Popovici is "just getting started." The Liberia-flagged Brave Commander departed from the Ukrainian port of Yuzhne, east of Odesa, according to regional governor Maksym Marchenko. It plans to sail to Djibouti, where the grain will be unloaded and transferred to Ethiopia under the World Food Program initiative. Ukraine and Russia reached a deal with Turkey on July 22 to restart Black Sea grain deliveries, addressing the major export disruption that has occurred since Russia invaded Ukraine in February. Norris had to adjust to 2022 McLaren F1 car that was “very unsuited for me”
Listen to this article Norris has led McLaren ’s efforts so far this season, scoring 76 of its 95 points and recording its best result of the season by finishing third at Imola in April. Teammate Daniel Ricciardo has failed to match Norris for form, prompting McLaren to swoop for Oscar Piastri as a replacement for 2023 . Ricciardo’s struggles with the current McLaren car have been well-documented, but Norris has also found it tricky to get to grips with the MCL36 at times, forcing him to adjust his driving style. “I don’t think you can probably in any way say the car is made around me,” Norris told Motorsport.com in an interview ahead of the summer break. “From what I want from the car, it's like the opposite of what it’s giving me at the minute! And yeah, I would say the car I have now is completely not what I want for my driving style, and very unsuited for me. “It’s not a bad thing, it’s just that’s what it is, and you have to adapt to it. That’s why I … [Read more...] about Norris had to adjust to 2022 McLaren F1 car that was “very unsuited for me”
Wolff: Don’t destroy Nordschleife for F1
Toto Wolff has urged Nurburgring bosses not to “destroy” the Nordschleife for the sake of trying to restore Formula 1 to the iconic German circuit. The Mercedes team principal discussed the topic in Formula 1’s Beyond The Grid podcast, shortly after the Nurburgring staged its first F1 race for seven years, the Eifel Grand Prix. A subject of fascination for many of the drivers was the Nordschleife circuit which adjoins the modern track. Nicknamed ‘The Green Hell’, the 12.9-mile circuit staged the German Grand Prix up to 1976 when Niki Lauda suffered a near-fatal accident. It is now the scene of several touring car races and also an annual 24-hour event for GT endurance cars. F1 cars have been driven around the circuit for exhibition purposes, but given the Nordschleife’s length there would be various logistical difficulties in holding a race there – plus, it would require a huge amount of work to bring it up to modern F1 safety standards. Track designer Hermann Tilke is … [Read more...] about Wolff: Don’t destroy Nordschleife for F1

Ricciardo says ‘no thank you’ to the Nordschleife
There’s no doubt that the Nurburgring’s Nordschleife is an icon of motor racing, but Daniel Ricciardo has no intention of competing on it. Nicknamed “The Green Hell” by Sir Jackie Stewart, the infamous Nordschleife circuit hosted various German GPs throughout the history of Formula 1 between 1950-1976. It was ultimately dropped from the calendar due to safety concerns, though the current 12.93-mile Nordschleife track, consisting of 154 turns, remains arguably the most famous circuit in the world. While it’s regularly used for endurance racing such as the 24 hours of the Nürburgring, which combines the Grand Prix circuit and the Nordschleife, the track is also used regularly for car testing and promotional content. And Ricciardo got the chance to sample it in a Renault Megane RS at the Eifel Grand Prix during the filming of a team movie. And it’s safe to say Ricciardo won’t be signing himself up for the 24 hours of the Nürburgring any time soon. “I’m a bit shocked, … [Read more...] about Ricciardo says ‘no thank you’ to the Nordschleife
Ricciardo defends Hamilton: ‘Easier said than done’
Daniel Ricciardo has denied that Lewis Hamilton only wins so much because of his car, stating that doing so is “easier said than done”. Hamilton officially became the joint-most prolific winner the sport has ever seen at the Eifel Grand Prix as he took his 91st victory, putting him level with Michael Schumacher. However, many feel that, despite the numbers, he isn’t one of the best drivers ever, claiming that he has only been so successful because of how dominant his car has been at Mercedes. Ricciardo, who finished the race at the Nurburgring alongside Hamilton on the podium in P3, doesn’t think that this is the case. “His career now has been well over a decade in the sport and to keep coming back and to show that level of consistency at the front, that’s not easy,” the Renault driver said as quoted by Autosport.com . “I think us up here [on the podium], I think we understand that. You can have a package and a car to do it, but it’s doing it every weekend when the … [Read more...] about Ricciardo defends Hamilton: ‘Easier said than done’
Top 10 Arrows F1 drivers ranked: Hill, Warwick, Fittipaldi and more
Listen to this article A team that began its time in Formula 1 under controversial circumstances, Arrows’ 24-year spell in the championship came to an end in 2002 amid mounting financial problems. Still the team with the most world championship race starts (counting the Footwork years) under its belt – at 382 – without ever taking a victory, Arrows came close to troubling the top step of the podium throughout its curious history – but fell short each time. The British squad, started up by former Lotus F1 driver Jackie Oliver, Alan Rees and Franco Ambrosio, went through multiple ownership changes in its latter years. It spent six seasons as Footwork in the 1990s, before Tom Walkinshaw took over for 1997 and restored the Arrows name. Although the team made an encouraging start under his tenure, with the Scot’s investment helping to bring 1996 champion Damon Hill and famed designer John Barnard into the team, it arguably over-reached its capabilities with an in-house engine … [Read more...] about Top 10 Arrows F1 drivers ranked: Hill, Warwick, Fittipaldi and more
