Lewis Hamilton raised the bar for this week's Spanish Grand Prix by setting the fastest time in second practice on Friday. Hamilton was beaten to top spot by his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas in the opening session, but the reigning champion ended the day fastest at Barcelona's sun-bathed Circuit de Catalunya. The British driver's best effort of one minute and 18.259 seconds enabled him to edge out Daniel Ricciardo by less than two tenths with his Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen third. Ricciardo crashed out of opening practice earlier on Friday after he lost control of his Red Bull at Turn 4 and slid helplessly across the gravel and into the barriers. But following repairs to his car, the Australian, backed up by Verstappen, ran Hamilton close enough to suggest Red Bull have the credentials to take the fight to Mercedes and Ferrari. Ferrari rarely show their true pace on Friday and Sebastian Vettel, who trails Hamilton by four points in the championship, … [Read more...] about Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes lay down marker in Spanish GP practice… but how much are Ferrari holding back?

What is it? The fifth round of the 2018 Formula One season returns to the newly-resurfaced but very familiar Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló, 20 or so kilometres outside of Barcelona. The teams spend a lot of time testing here in pre-season, so they know it better than the backs of their hands. Many of the teams will also be bringing significant upgrades. When is it? The season returns to Europe this weekend with the race today (Sunday). What time does it start? It's the first European race starting under F1's new schedule, so every session is moved back an hour, with the race starting 70 minutes later than last year. In other words, qualifying starts at 2pm BST on Saturday and the race at 2.10pm on Sunday. How can I watch it? As ever, all the coverage is screened live on Sky Sports F1. Their qualifying coverage starts at 1pm BST and their race coverage on Sunday begins at 11.30am with On The Grid coverage from 12.30. The usual suspects will … [Read more...] about Spanish Grand Prix 2018: What time does the race start, which TV channel is it on and what odds of a Lewis Hamilton win?
It took until the fourth round of the season and luck played a significant part, but Lewis Hamilton has his first victory of 2018 and with it the championship lead. Not only was it his first win of the season but it was also his first in seven races, since last year's United States Grand Prix. In contrast to the victory opportunity in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix that was snatched from his grasp, here it fell into his lap. Yet again - for the third time in four rounds - the Safety Car played a crucial role in deciding victory. Hamilton was thankful to take the top step of the podium after a middling race but, as Mercedes chief Toto Wolff declared afterwards, he got back the victory... It was insanity on wheels at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, balancing between chaos, drama and fury. The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Motorsport driver Lewis Hamilton won when he wasn’t even expecting. Teammate Valtteri Bottas got a flat tire not long before the finish line and was forced to retire. Starting from P2 and P3, Mercedes was hoping for a triumph in Baku, but they had to go trhough agony to feel the ecstasy. It was though the other way around for the rivals from Red Bull. The Red Bulls collided in lap 13, with Max Verstappen managing to keep teammate Daniel Ricciardo at bay. But the worst was yet to come. It was the most exciting of duels in Baku, since the Aussie and the Dutch faught their war all the way to the end, with Ricciardo overtaking in lap 35. The pit stop in lap 39 sent Ricciardo behind Verstappen again. Lewis Hamilton needed to change tires after an odd braking mistake in lap 22. The Brit blamed race engineer Peter Bennington and hoped that this tires would not … [Read more...] about Lewis Hamilton wins insane race at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix
It’s the age-old question posed by many a motorsports fan: which race series has the fastest car outright? Porsche wants to put that question to bed by embarking on a world tour with a modified version of its 919 Hybrid LMP1 prototype, with the aim of breaking a few lap records on world-famous race tracks. In fact, Zuffenhausen claims it has already done so – and on the legendary Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps at that. Works driver Neel Jani lapped the seven-kilometre track, which plays host to the Belgian Grand Prix, in a blistering 1 minute 41.770 seconds. That’s 0.783 seconds faster than the previous record – the pole position time set by Lewis Hamilton in his Mercedes AMG F1 W08 EQ Power+ during qualifying last year. Jani reached a top speed of 359 km/h and managed an average speed of 245.61 km/h throughout the lap. The revised race car, christened the 919 Hybrid Evo, was built to explore the potential of the 919 without the regulatory limitations of the World … [Read more...] about Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo blitzes Spa lap record – 1 min 41.770 secs, faster than Lewis Hamilton’s F1 car

7 April 2018 • 2:52pm Hamilton takes five-place grid penalty for gearbox change Kimi Raikkonen was quickest for Ferrari under lights in Friday practice and again in FP3 2017 Bahrain GP winner Sebastian Vettel currently leads the drivers' championship after one round Auto update On Off 2:03PM Good afternoon and welcome! Who will take pole in Bahrain? It's damage limitation for Lewis Hamilton I'm afraid Yesterday's second practice session for the Bahrain Grand Prix threw up a little surprise, with Ferrari topping the timesheets, both their cars quicker than both Mercedes cars. Not great news for Lewis Hamilton. Worse news for Hamilton, though, was that he takes a five place grid penalty following a gearbox change. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff believed the Scuderia's pace was down to a high-power engine mode, though. Read our post-session report here. Both Red Bulls were approximately a second off the quickest time set by Kimi Raikkonen but showed … [Read more...] about Bahrain Grand Prix 2018 qualifying live updates and Lewis Hamilton latest

Kimi Raikkonen led his team-mate Sebastian Vettel for a Ferrari 1-2 in second practice, ahead of Sunday's Bahrain Grand Prix. The Finn finished ahead of the German by just 0.011 seconds. The Mercedes cars of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton came in third and fourth respectively, both drivers over half a second behind Raikkonen. The session ended on a slightly sour note for Ferrari, however, as Raikkonen was released from the pits with one of his wheels not correctly attached. The incident was investigated after the session but the Finn escaped a grid penalty for an unsafe release. The team, however, were fined €5,000. The Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo finished in fifth and sixth, around a second off Raikkonen. Ricciardo earlier topped first free practice ahead of Bottas and Raikkonen. Very little should be read into FP1 times, as the session takes place under vastly different conditions to qualifying and the race, which both happen under lights. … [Read more...] about Kimi Raikkonen tops second practice for Bahrain Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes struggle in the desert
GP2 Testing, February 2006 I’d expected him to look older. I suppose its only natural with someone you’d been reading about for years, but he’d been such a constant part of the motorsport landscape for such a long time that I’d imagined he’d already be the finished article. He’d been a mini-megastar in England since his karting days. Even as a child I remember seeing his face on TV, on the news, on ITV’s karting show with DJ David ‘Kid’ Jensen, Blue Peter, through the pages of Autosport and Motoring News. He was a future world champion. That’s what we’d always been told. That’s what we’d always believed. And here he was, this future F1 superstar. I’d expected him to be taller. I’d expected him to be broader… I’d expected him to look older. But there he stood on the pitwall in his ASM F3 overalls, a black fleece three sizes too large wrapped around him, his curly mini-afro blowing in … [Read more...] about The Contenders – Lewis Hamilton
