Max Verstappen had to contend with a broken RB14 as he raced his way to sixth place in Sunday's Australian Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver lost a position to Kevin Magnussen on the opening lap in Melbourne but looked to attack the Haas driver only to spin. That resulted in the Dutchman dropping from fifth to eighth place. Like many others, Verstappen struggled to overtake at the Albert Park circuit despite a third DRS being added for this year's race. He finished P6. "After a decent first get away, a bit unlucky at Turn One and got a bit caught out and lost a position," he said. "Suddenly I had a lot of issues with the car, balance problems, we found out after four or five laps something broke off the car, and all the time in the middle of the corner was losing a lot of grip and at one point I got caught out at Turn One and spun. "It’s not ideal but luckily with the 360 I didn’t lose too many positions. After that you are in the hunt but you can’t overtake on this … [Read more...] about Verstappen: Something broke off the car
A self-driving Uber car struck 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg as she walked her bicycle across a street in Tempe, Arizona on Sunday night. The woman passed away. The Volvo XC90 was in autonomous mode, and Rafael Vasquez, 44, was behind the wheel as a safeguard as the vehicle piloted itself. The SUV was moving around 65 km/h (40 mph) in a 35 mph zone, according to Tempe Police detective Lily Duran. Police said that there were no significant signs of the SUV slowing down before the crash. Apparently, Herzberg, who may have been homeless according to the police, was crossing the street mid-block when she was struck. “The safety of our citizens here in Tempe is of the utmost importance. None of us ever want to go through this ever again, using the crosswalks will definitely limit this from happening again,” Tempe Police Sgt. Ronald Elcock said. Uber, which is conducting autonomous vehicle tests in Arizona, Pittsburgh, Toronto and other areas, said it has stopped testing the … [Read more...] about Self-driving Uber car kills woman, test fleet suspended
This time around, the rejigged opposition’s election manifesto for the upcoming 14th General Election (GE14) did not trumpet lower car prices if it came into power so loudly, unlike in the previous GE, when “Turunkan Harga Kereta” was part of a turun everything campaign. However, dig in and you’ll find that Pakatan Harapan intends to cut excise duties on imported cars below 1.6 litres for first-time buyers. PAS, now divorced from PKR and DAP, has made a somewhat similar pledge. The Islamic party has unveiled a manifesto for its Gagasan Sejahtera platform, which includes Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia (Ikatan) and Barisan Jemaah Islamiah Se-Malaysia (Berjasa). The manifesto includes the expected promise of abolishing the Goods and Services Tax (GST), but it also threw in something car related – exempting excise tax for first-time car buyers. The proposal by PAS is to exempt excise tax for first-time car buyers, applicable to vehicles with engine capacities … [Read more...] about PAS GE14 manifesto touts zero excise tax for first car buyers, interest-free loans
