Norris accuses Perez of costing him “10 seconds” during VSC period
Lando Norris was infuriated at losing a significant amount of time behind Sergio Perez during a Virtual Safety Car period in the Japanese Grand Prix. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free The McLaren driver was pursuing Perez’s team mate Max Verstappen , who was leading the race, when the Virtual Safety Car period began on lap 14. It was triggered after Perez collided with Kevin Magnussen while trying to pass the Haas driver. Perez emerged from the pits shortly before the VSC period began and immediately reported his car was handling badly. Verstappen swept by him in the lead and the VSC was deployed seconds later. Although drivers were required to slow to the same speed under the VSC, Norris caught Perez, and was unsure whether he was allowed to pass the Red Bull driver. In an increasingly frustrated exchange with his race engineer Will Joseph, Norris repeatedly asked whether he should pass Perez. Joseph even suggested Perez could be “doing it on purpose” … [Read more...] about Norris accuses Perez of costing him “10 seconds” during VSC period
Another Verstappen win makes Red Bull champions again as Piastri reaches podium
Max Verstappen took another comfortable victory in the Japanese Grand Prix ahead of the two McLaren drivers to win the constructors’ championship for Red Bull. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Oscar Piastri secured his first podium finish in his rookie season, taking the chequered flag third behind team mate Lando Norris. Despite Sergio Perez failing to finish after collisions with two other drivers, Verstappen’s win was easily enough to clinch the title for his team. At the start of the race, Piastri lined up alongside pole winner Verstappen on the front row. When the lights went out, the McLaren drivers attacked the Red Bull from both sides, Piastri on the inside, Norris the outside, but Verstappen held his lead as Norris moved ahead of his team mate into second. Back in the pack, there were multiple collisions between Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton and, further back, Valtteri Bottas, Kevin Magnussen and Alexander Albon. That left debris strewn … [Read more...] about Another Verstappen win makes Red Bull champions again as Piastri reaches podium
Perez given four penalty points for two incidents in Japanese Grand Prix
Sergio Perez collected four penalty points in a single race after being involved in two separate incidents in the Japanese Grand Prix. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free The Red Bull driver was penalised for overtaking Fernando Alonso under Safety Car conditions on his way into the pits and colliding with Kevin Magnussen at the hairpin. Following Perez’s retirement from the race Red Bull returned him to the track, 25 laps down, in order to ensure he served the second of two five-second time penalties he was given for the incidents. He also received two penalty points for each, moving him onto a total of seven. Any driver who reaches 12 penalty points in a 12-month period receives an automatic one-race ban. “It was just a disastrous weekend,” Perez told F1TV. “It all started into turn one with a really bad start and I was squeezed down and I was just a passenger then in a sandwich. I think we carried a lot of damage in the car as well and that just made it … [Read more...] about Perez given four penalty points for two incidents in Japanese Grand Prix
Logan Sargeant points finger at Valtteri Bottas for not avoiding his mistake
The only driver not confirmed for next season, Logan Sargeant had a nightmare Japanese Grand Prix weekend that did nothing to quash speculation about his future. Crashing in qualifying at the Suzuka circuit, Sargeant caused significant damage to his FW45, so much so Williams had to make extensive repairs. Using their spare survival cell, the FIA ruled that the changes made were “more than an assembly comprising a survival cell” and that the car built for him for the race had to be “considered as a third car” . Another incident-filled weekend for Logan Sargeant As such he not only lined up in the pit lane but he did so with a 10-second penalty hanging over his head. With the Safety Car out on the opening lap for a collision that involved his team-mate Alex Albon, Williams took advantage to bring Sargeant in to serve his time penalty. Back in the race, but running near the back, he tussled with Valtteri Bottas but in an ill-judged move that included a lock-up for the … [Read more...] about Logan Sargeant points finger at Valtteri Bottas for not avoiding his mistake
Red Bull break record with sixth constructors’ championship win
Red Bull have clinched the 2023 Formula 1 constructors’ championship after winning the Japanese Grand Prix. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Max Verstappen’s victory in today’s race ensures they can no longer be overhauled by their rivals in the standings. Red Bull have secured the title for the sixth time since they entered the series in 2005. Having dominated the 2023 championship, they have ended the title fight with six races remaining. This is earlier than any team has ever won the title. McLaren and Ferrari won the constructors’ title with five races to spare in 1988 and 2004 respectively. “For us the most amazing year,” said team boss Christian Horner. “It’s all testimony to these guys and all the men and women back in the factory in Milton Keynes. “To Red Bull, to all our partners, it’s the collection of an incredible effort of everybody doing their bit to achieve results like we’ve done and of course Max is just on another level at the … [Read more...] about Red Bull break record with sixth constructors’ championship win
Mercedes’ call to help Russell using DRS “made no sense” – Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton said Mercedes made the wrong call when he was told to slow down and help his team mate by giving him the opportunity to use his Drag Reduction System. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free The two Mercedes drivers were being pursued by Carlos Sainz Jnr in the closing stages of the Japanese Grand Prix. George Russell ran at the front of the queue but his tyres were more worn as he had only pitted once. Hamilton and Sainz behind him had the benefit of fresher rubber. Hamilton said it was inevitable Russell was going to be passed by Sainz and Mercedes should have waved him past his teammate at the first opportunity, so he could build up a gap over the pursuing Ferrari. Instead he spent several laps behind Russell and once he was allowed past, Hamilton was told to back off so Russell could use DRS. However Sainz was still able to overtake the second Mercedes. Sainz used a similar DRS ploy to good effect when he won the Singapore Grand Prix last … [Read more...] about Mercedes’ call to help Russell using DRS “made no sense” – Hamilton
Lando Norris left ‘shouting and swearing’ in unseen Sergio Perez VSC drama
Lando Norris admits he was “shouting and swearing” as a slow-moving Sergio Perez cost him ten seconds in race time under Virtual Safety Car conditions. The Virtual Safety Car came out after Perez had collided with the Haas of Kevin Magnussen, with both drivers requiring a trip to the pit lane for repairs. And during that VSC period, ultimate P2 finisher Norris found himself coming up behind Perez, travelling at a very slow speed, though Norris was unsure whether he could overtake the Red Bull driver or not. Lando Norris “shouting and swearing” at Sergio Perez Footage of this incident was not picked up by the cameras at Suzuka, but Norris claimed that it cost him up to 10 seconds and left him very flustered in the McLaren cockpit. Asked what was going on during that Perez VSC incident, Norris replied: “I have no idea. I don’t know. “I mean, he must have had a problem. Right? But the thing is, you can’t overtake under VSC and it’s obvious the guy has a problem and I didn’t … [Read more...] about Lando Norris left ‘shouting and swearing’ in unseen Sergio Perez VSC drama
