Nissan’s new electric vehicle is about to go on an epic adventure. The automaker today revealed the modified Ariya that will make the 17,000-mile trek from the North Pole to the South Pole that starts later this year. It’s been beefed up for the trip, but the company kept the mods to a minimum while showcasing its battery-electric powertrain. The biggest upgrades are its most noticeable – the suspension and tires. Nissan gave the electric crossover a beefier suspension and chunky 39-inch BF Goodrich tires, widening the fenders to accommodate the modified gear. On top, the automaker installed a roof-mounted utility unit that houses a deployable drone. Inside, the automaker integrated an espresso machine to make the mornings out in the wilderness a bit more manageable. Tlaquepaque Marketplace revamps East End
On a down-at-the-heels strip of Telephone Road off the East End's Harrisburg corridor, the Tlaquepaque Marketplace bursts into view like an exotic flower in the desert. Colors assault the eyes: Dusty orange, bright fuchsia, turquoise — all the hues favored by Mexican villages and startling against the sleek downtown skyline that looms to the west. Built in Mexican Colonial style, the marketplace is the vision of Bolivian-born architect Julio del Carpio , whose projects are part of an ongoing renaissance in this historic but gritty community. A crackhouse until recently stood across the way. Now a snow-cone vendor occupies the cleared but shaggy lot. Improvements come in increments. "I believe in grabbing old buildings that most people would probably demolish and making something original out of them," del Carpio says. In the 2000 Census, Hispanics surpassed whites and blacks to become the dominant population group in Houston. But while more than 38 percent of city … [Read more...] about Tlaquepaque Marketplace revamps East End
Prince’s Hamburgers has closed its last location in Houston but a revival is near
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 45 The last Prince's Hamburgers location in Houston has closed, a victim of Hurricane Harvey's massive flooding. The location at 3425 Ella Boulevard was the last location standing. A Houston institution for 84 years, Prince's is one of the most-beloved chains in the area. RELATED: Houston's oldest restaurants can still dish it out There is something to hopeful for, though, as owner John Broussard told Chron.com Friday afternoon that he is currently looking to reopen at a new location later this year. Prince's busy catering business is still very much in operation. "The flood hurt us and that location, but I want to reopen … [Read more...] about Prince’s Hamburgers has closed its last location in Houston but a revival is near
After bitter RNC meeting, Democrats look to project unity
WASHINGTON (AP) — A week after bitter divisions dominated a national Republican gathering, Democrats holding their own meeting are eager to showcase just how much they agree on. There will be no party chair fight since Jaime Harrison isn’t up for reelection until 2025. There is no candidate jostling for a White House bid since President Joe Biden is expected to seek a second term. And there is no national reckoning after a surprisingly strong midterm showing. The only real point of contention for the Democratic National Committee’s winter meeting in Philadelphia this weekend is a proposed overhaul of the 2024 presidential primary calendar, which has angered top party leaders in New Hampshire. But even that is largely moot since Biden isn’t expected to face a major challenge for the nomination. The DNC on Saturday is expected to approve a new lineup for the party's presidential primaries, deferring to Biden, who has championed South Carolina's primary opening voting on Feb. 3. … [Read more...] about After bitter RNC meeting, Democrats look to project unity
See Chevrolet Corvette C8 Get Built In Detailed Assembly Line Video
For upwards of 40 years, Bowling Green, Kentucky has been the birthplace of new Chevrolet Corvettes. The facility started with the then-new 1984 C4 Corvette, and it continues today with C8 assembly. Much of the plant was upgraded to make that happen, which is mentioned along with other interesting Corvette details in a new 42-minute feature from savagegeese on YouTube. Through this video, we learn that Corvette production is quite different from other Chevrolet vehicles and not just because the engine is behind the driver. For example, the process begins with individual body panels getting painted right away, then sent off for assembly sometime later. While this is happening, the aluminum tub is manufactured (technically it's the only Corvette component manufactured at the plant – everything else is merely assembled). The tub goes to the trim department where the interior, glass, and similar items are fitted. US charges 4 key suspects in killing of Haiti’s president
MIAMI (AP) — Four key suspects in the killing of Haiti's president appeared for the first time in U.S. federal court Wednesday to face accusations that they plotted and participated in his assassination, a day after they were transferred to the United States for prosecution. Haitian-Americans James Solages, Joseph Vincent and Christian Emmanuel Sanon and Colombian citizen Germán Rivera García looked calm as they entered a federal court in Miami wearing beige prisoner uniforms with their hands and ankles shackled. They did not speak at the hearing, except to petition for a public defender when Judged Alicia Otazo-Reyes asked each of them if they can afford to pay an attorney. “I would appreciate it if the court would appoint a counselor," said Solages, the second of the defendants called by the judge to listen to the charges. He, like each of them, answered “no” when the judge asked if they have work, savings or property. The judge appointed a different attorney for each of … [Read more...] about US charges 4 key suspects in killing of Haiti’s president

Moazzam Jah Ansari said the bomber had been identified and police were close to arresting members of the network that was behind Monday's attack, one of the deadliest ever in Peshawar, the capital in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. “We will avenge the martyrdom of each and every policeman," Ansari told a news conference. The blast collapsed the roof of the 50-year-old mosque, killing 101 people, mostly policemen. Two hundred twenty-five people were injured. Houston pet owners must now microchip their animals to avoid fine
Beginning Wednesday, Feb. 1, the City of Houston will require all dog and cat owners to microchip their pets . City officials say the microchips will help the city return lost pets to their owners and register them. Houston City Council passed an ordinance in 2022 to require any resident in the city that owns a dog or a cat at least four months old to be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. The year-long grace period ends Wednesday as the law goes into effect. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner reminded residents in a Houston City Council meeting on Wednesday morning. "Please get your pets chipped, and let's move forward," Turner said. In an interview with KHOU 11 , BARC Deputy Director Cory Stottlemeyer said the microchip is to help pet owners and city officials find pets in case they're lost. "You could be the best pet owner in the world, but when a stressful situation happens, anything, anything can happen," Stottlemeyer told KHOU. The one major difference in Houston Rockets, Thunder rebuild efforts
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 Houston Rockets head coach Stephen Silas was posed a simple question as he met with the media following Tuesday's practice at the Toyota Center. Silas was asked to identify what is separating the rebuilds in Houston and Oklahoma City at the moment before the two squads face off Wednesday evening. As the Rockets enter Wednesday night firmly in the Western Conference cellar, the Thunder find themselves in the thick of the playoff hunt, far away from the race to the bottom of the lottery in hopes of landing Victor Wembanyama . Silas highlighted one major reason why Oklahoma City has been able to kickstart its rebuild following All-Star departures across the last half-decade. "They have a really good player who could be a top-10 player in the league," Silas said in reference to Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. "Early, he helped them win some games to where their … [Read more...] about The one major difference in Houston Rockets, Thunder rebuild efforts
