Approaching his IndyCar debut at 45 years old, Jimmie Johnson is an old rookie, but he’s not just any old rookie. In a NASCAR Cup career that spanned 20 years and 686 races, he won seven championships 83 race wins. Now he’s about to embark on an IndyCar career of currently indeterminate length, with Chip Ganassi Racing-Honda. The active Scott Dixon and retired Dario Franchitti, with 10 IndyCar championships between them, will respond favorably to tutoring this 21 st century legend because they know that Johnson hasn’t just turned to open-wheel racing as a passing whim, something to occupy himself now his NASCAR days are over. He was always into open-wheel racing. His original hero was Rick Mears, and racing Indy cars was his ambition when he was a pre-teen growing up in Southern California, attending the Grand Prix of Long Beach and watching all the Indy car races on TV with his grandfather. Attending the 2004 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix with fellow NASCAR legend Jeff … [Read more...] about Jimmie Johnson: The NASCAR legend’s IndyCar challenge

Jimmie Johnson’s Carvana IndyCar livery unveiled
Carvana, a giant in the auto retail industry, will back the seven-time NASCAR Cup champion as he tackles the 13 road and street courses on the 17-race 2021 NTT IndyCar Series trail. Johnson, who scored 83 wins in Cup competition, will carry Carvana’s signature halo and blue on the #48, which will be driven by 2004 IndyCar champion and 2013 Indy 500 winner Tony Kanaan in the four oval races. Said Johnson: "I'm really excited about this paint scheme, and over the last few years of my career I've found myself much more involved with the look of the cars that I drive. I was very thankful Carvana gave me the opportunity to be involved in the design process of my very first Indy car. “The collaboration between myself, Chip Ganassi Racing, Carvana and the design group was a lot of fun – we came up with many, many good ideas. AXR signs Johnson, Kobayashi, Pagenaud for all IMSA enduros
After this trio – along with Mike Rockenfeller – finished second in the season-opening Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, the Ally-sponsored Cadillac DPi-V.R was the subject of some speculation. In the past, AXR has proven well able to run two cars of race-winning potential, but last year entered just the #31 Whelen Engineering machine for Felipe Nasr and Pipo Derani. However, AXR has now confirmed that the #48 will also compete at this month’s 12 Hours of Sebring, the Six Hours of the Glen and Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. “I had such a great experience at the Rolex 24 at Daytona finishing second in the Ally Cadillac DPi-V.R that I want to continue and run the rest of the IMSA long events,” Johnson said. “The whole experience working with the Action Express Racing team, sharing the Ally Cadillac with Simon, Kamui and Mike just made me want to do more racing in the series. “The Cadillac DPi-V.R is such a great car to drive. I can’t wait to turn some laps at Sebring, The Glen and … [Read more...] about AXR signs Johnson, Kobayashi, Pagenaud for all IMSA enduros
Cadillac: LMDh regs have “caught our attention”
Klauser, who has been brought in to head up both Cadillac and Corvette Racing’s IMSA programs has seen the Cadillac DPi-V.R prove immensely successful since its introduction into the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2017, scoring 18 wins and two Manufacturers’ titles. However, it is not yet clear whether Cadillac will continue into IMSA’s LMDh Prototype era, which has been pushed back to 2023. GM is also currently assessing the new-for-2022 GTD Pro class, as the GTLM class in which the Corvette C8.Rs currently compete is to be dissolved at the end of this season. “LMDh has caught our attention,” Klauser told Motorsport.com. “We’ve taken a good look at the rules, and what we’re doing now is looking through where we want to place ourselves in sportscar racing in its entirety. “It’s a package deal in our mind, where in the past it was a little bit separated – Corvette Racing was its own thing in GTLM, Cadillac was its own thing in Prototypes. Now it’s a different … [Read more...] about Cadillac: LMDh regs have “caught our attention”
