WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court ruling expanding gun rights threatens to upend firearms restrictions across the country as activists wage court battles over everything from bans on AR-15-style guns to age limits. The decision handed down in June already has led one judge to temporarily block a Colorado town from enforcing a ban on the sale and possession of certain semi-automatic weapons. The first major gun decision in more than a decade, the ruling could dramatically reshape gun laws in the U.S. even as a series of horrific mass shootings pushes the issue back into the headlines. “The gun rights movement has been given a weapon of mass destruction, and it will annihilate approximately 75% of the gun laws eventually," said Evan Nappen, a New Jersey gun rights attorney. The court battles come as the Biden administration and police departments across the U.S. struggle to combat a surge in violent crime and mass shootings, including several high-profile killings carried … [Read more...] about After Supreme Court ruling, it’s open season on US gun laws

A progressive prosecutor clashed with DeSantis – now he’s out of a job
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 TAMPA, Fla. - State Attorney Andrew Warren was waiting for a grand jury to issue indictments in two rape and murder cases he had been working on for three years when he glanced down at his phone and saw an email from an attorney for Gov. Ron DeSantis. It said he was suspended from his job. Stunned, Warren quickly went to his office to consult with his staff. Not long after, there was a knock at the door. An armed major from the county sheriff's office and a man in a suit from the governor's office carrying a copy of DeSantis' executive order suspending him were looking for him. "He said, essentially, 'The governor has suspended you and you need to leave the office now,'" Warren, a Democrat, recalled of DeSantis' aide. "So within maybe seven minutes from getting the email, I was outside, on the street. The major offered me a ride home because they … [Read more...] about A progressive prosecutor clashed with DeSantis – now he’s out of a job
A year after U.S. drone strike killed Afghan civilians, relatives on path to resettlement
The Biden administration in recent weeks has moved out of Afghanistan nearly four dozen relatives of the 10 civilians killed in a U.S. drone strike last year during the withdrawal from the country, senior government officials and the family said. The complex relocation process, which is still underway, comes a year after the Biden administration withdrew from Afghanistan, ending 20 years of American warfare there in an exit marred by chaos, desperation and violence. The killing of Afghan aid worker Zemari Ahmadi and his relatives in Kabul marked a rare instance in which the U.S. government took responsibility for civilian deaths caused by a U.S. drone strike and offered compensation, advocates said. The U.S. military admitted last fall that it had made a "horrible mistake" when it launched a Hellfire missile on Aug. 29 at Ahmadi's home, killing him and nine of his relatives - most of them children - under the false belief that it was targeting a member of a terrorist … [Read more...] about A year after U.S. drone strike killed Afghan civilians, relatives on path to resettlement

Road America IMSA: Albuquerque/Taylor win, title rival Jarvis crashes
Listen to this article On a dry track, but with rain showers looming in the vicinity, Albuquerque ( Wayne Taylor Racing Acura ARX-05) led from pole ahead of Alex Lynn’s Chip Ganassi Racing Cadillac. Richard Westbrook ’s JDC-Miller Cadillac grabbed third initially from Tom Blomqvist ( Meyer Shank Racing Acura), who lost a further spot when Sebastien Bourdais bullied his way past in the #01 CGR Caddy. The Frenchman then pulled another forceful move on Westbrook to take third on Lap 2 and switched places with Lynn for second after 20 minutes of racing. Under the first full-course yellow, due to a hapless LMP2 spin, the rain intensified but not enough for the majority of the DPi class to change to wets – apart from Westbrook, who’d told his team if they saw more rain on the radar they should switch. A struggling MSR took advantage of the yellow to make big setup changes to its Acura, and switched in Oliver Jarvis for good measure, while leaders WTR also made a … [Read more...] about Road America IMSA: Albuquerque/Taylor win, title rival Jarvis crashes
Why the 2022 IndyCar title fight is Penske vs. Ganassi… yet again
Listen to this article So there we were in February, a fellow IndyCar addict and I, chewing the fat and predicting who would win the IndyCar championship, who would win Rookie of the Year, who would be most improved driver, who would win the Indy 500, who would win the 500’s Rookie of the Year honors… We didn’t write down our predictions and, since we’re both hovering around the half-century mark, our short- to mid-term memories are patchy at best. But we were certainly wise enough (or uncertain enough) not to put any money on it, and that’s just as well because I think I went for Colton Herta as champion, Scott Dixon as Indy 500 winner, Kyle Kirkwood as Rookie of the Year and David Malukas as Indy 500 Rookie of the Year. Now, in my defense, Malukas should have gotten that last one, but there’s a voting system element to that accolade, so its destiny is vulnerable to folk obstructing the course of justice. Ah well. And I also recall, on the eve of the … [Read more...] about Why the 2022 IndyCar title fight is Penske vs. Ganassi… yet again
