LOS ANGELES (AP) — Albert Pujols seemed like a long shot in early August to reach 700 home runs, still more than a dozen swings from the hallowed mark and his power stroke all but gone. Or so it appeared. Now showing the pop of his youth in the final weeks of his career, the 42-year-old slugger got there with two long shots. Pujols hit his 700th home run, connecting for his second drive of the game and becoming the fourth player in major league history to make it to the milestone as the St. Louis Cardinals routed the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-0 Friday night. Pujols joined Barry Bonds (762 homers), Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714) in one of baseball’s most exclusive clubs. This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 21 TORONTO (AP) — Canadian troops are being sent to assist the recovery from the devastation of storm Fiona, which swept away houses, stripped off roofs and knocked out power across the country's Atlantic provinces. After surging north from the Caribbean as a hurricane, Fiona came ashore before dawn Saturday as a post-tropical cyclone, battering Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Quebec with hurricane-strength winds, heavy rains and huge waves. Defense Minister Anita Anand said Saturday that troops would help remove fallen trees and other debris, restore transportation links and do whatever else is required for as long as it takes. She didn’t specify how many troops would be deployed. Fiona was blamed for at least five deaths in the Caribbean, but there was … [Read more...] about Canadian military to help clean up Fiona’s devastation
Marco Rubio hopes to sway voters interested in Chick-fil-A, Ram trucks, and Duck Dynasty. John Fetterman is searching for fans of microbreweries, Teslas and the Dave Matthews Band. And Michael Bennet wants to reach people who like Taylor Swift and Lizzo — while avoiding devoted listeners of Jason Aldean. Candidates in some of the highest-profile midterm races are using Facebook and Instagram ad targeting to aim messages at voters based on their music tastes, sports fandoms, shopping destinations and television habits, a CNN review of data from the social media platforms found. The data, which Facebook parent company Meta has started to make public in recent months, provides a snapshot into how political campaigns are slicing and dicing online groups of voters based on very specific interests. Damon Hill hopes the FIA’s decision to install a new CEO, Natalie Robyn, reverses what he sees as a “degrading” of the sport’s governing body. The CEO role has been created at the FIA to complement that of the president, Mohammed ben Sulayem, with Robyn appointed due to her considerable experience in the automotive industry at companies including Volvo, Nissan and Daimler-Chrysler, although not in motorsport. In the last 12 months, the FIA’s reputation has taken a hit largely due to the way in which the climax to the 2021 title-deciding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was managed, leading to race director Michael Masi being removed from his job. There also appears to be something of a power struggle ongoing between the FIA and Formula 1, with bones of contention including plans to increase the number of sprint qualifying events and, more recently, the timing of the 2023 F1 calendar announcement. Hill, the 1996 World Champion with Williams , feels the FIA’s position has been … [Read more...] about Damon Hill: ‘Degrading FIA need to match Formula 1’s power and weight’
Ross Brawn hopes Mick Schumacher’s Formula 1 career continues – whether still at Haas or with another team. At the age of 23, Schumi junior already looks to be at a crossroads, Haas boss Guenther Steiner openly discussing in the media that the team are deliberating whether to replace him, potentially with a more experienced driver. Schumacher failing to score points in his debut campaign was no surprise considering how uncompetitive the Haas car was, but this year the German recorded back-to-back top-10 finishes in Britain and Austria. He still finds himself outscored 22-12 by team-mate Kevin Magnussen having crashed too often for Steiner’s liking in the opening third of the campaign, but has won the internal head-to-head battle in seven of the last nine races. That suggests Schumacher is responding to the challenge of knowing his future is under threat, with Steiner having highlighted a lack of consistency . Brawn will naturally side with the son of the seven-time … [Read more...] about Ross Brawn: Mick Schumacher ‘deserves to take next step’ in Formula 1 career
