George Russell has said the “correct decision” has ultimately been made in the outcome of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, even if it did cost the Mercedes driver a podium. After Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso crossed the line third, a 10-second post-race penalty was then applied after he was found to have supposedly incorrectly served a five-second penalty in his pit box, with a mechanic inadvertently touching his car with the rear jack before five seconds had elapsed. The FIA subsequently issued Alonso with a further time penalty, promoting Mercedes driver Russell into third on Sunday night – and even having the trophy for third place taken down to the Mercedes garage as a result. Ferrari has been spotted covering its onboard FOM camera with a bag when its car is not running on the track. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free The practice has caught the eye of rival teams. It prompted speculation Ferrari was covering its camera to prevent the team’s activities being observed in between runs during practice and qualifying. RaceFans has learned Ferrari took the decision to cover its camera partly in response to an incident at a previous race weekend when a rear-facing camera was accidentally activated while the car was in the garage. This resulted in footage of sensitive parts of its car including the engine and rear suspension being broadcast. However there is also a practical reason for Ferrari’s decision. The operating temperature range of Formula 1’s onboard cameras is between 50 and 120C. Netflix has announced Brazilian actor Gabriel Leone will play the role of Ayrton Senna in its upcoming dramatisation of his life. He rose to fame for his role in Dom, a Brazilian television series produced by Amazon. The announcement of his casting was made on what would have been Senna’s 63rd birthday. He is also due to appear in another upcoming motorsport film. Leone has been cast in Michael Mann’s film Ferrari as Alfonso de Portago, the first Spanish driver to finish on the podium in Formula 1. De Portago died along with his co-driver and 10 spectators when he crashed during the Mille Miglia sports car race in 1957. Mercedes are making faster progress in developing their 2023 car having accepted they needed a change of concept, says team principal Toto Wolff.
