Williams driver Russell collided with Bottas when trying to overtake the Mercedes car for ninth place in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, resulting in a big crash. The incident eliminated both drivers from the race and brought out a red flag due to debris strewn across the track. It also caused Bottas’s car to almost be written off due to the amount of damage sustained. Bottas and Russell blamed each other for the incident, but Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was unimpressed by Russell’s actions, saying he has “lots to learn” and should have been more mindful against a car from his parent team. Russell issued an apology for Bottas on Monday evening, saying he “should have handled the whole situation better”. Speaking before issuing his apology, Russell said he was confident that the incident would not have a negative impact on his relationship with Mercedes. Russell has been a member of its junior programme since 2017, and is widely tipped to one day succeed either … [Read more...] about Russell insists Bottas crash won’t harm Mercedes relationship

Norris: Leclerc should have passed Verstappen at Imola restart
Verstappen was preparing to take the pack back up to racing speed after the Emilia Romagna event had been suspended to clear up the wreckage from George Russell and Valtteri Bottas crashing heavily, when the Red Bull driver lost control at the final corners. He speared left over the kerbs of the first Rivazza turn, appearing to briefly put all four wheels across the white line at the track's edge – although footage from Leclerc's car is unclear that this happened. Had Leclerc opted to press on, Verstappen would have been entitled to try and repass before the first safety car line (the lap was considered to be in effect another formation lap despite the lack of standing start), but the Ferrari driver also would have been permitted to race to the line as he would have had taken over as head of the queue. In any case, Leclerc felt Verstappen "always had one wheel on the track" and so did not attack, but Norris, who was running behind the two leaders at the time of the … [Read more...] about Norris: Leclerc should have passed Verstappen at Imola restart
Vettel: FIA “not very professional” in dealing with Imola penalty
The Aston Martin driver was hit with a 10-second penalty after his team failed to fit the wheels on his car before the five-minute signal ahead of the start of the race. However, the penalty was only announced after lap 22 of the race, and the delay compromised Vettel's chances at the time. Although Vettel went on to retire from the Imola race on the penultimate lap, the four-time champion was still frustrated by the FIA's speed in announcing the penalty. "Obviously the guys tried everything on the grid and I think they did really well, they were really alert," said Vettel of his pre-race problems. "I think we could have had a better race if the FIA was more alert because I think we broke a rule, I guess, that is why we got a penalty, but they didn't bother until way into the race, so by that time the penalty cost us a lot more than it would have done earlier in the race. "That is not very professional." Read Also: Emilia Romagna Grand Prix Driver Ratings … [Read more...] about Vettel: FIA “not very professional” in dealing with Imola penalty
Knife-edge F1 battle risks Red Bull/Mercedes development war
The two teams have taken a victory apiece so far this year, with Lewis Hamilton winning the season opener in Bahrain and Max Verstappen triumphing at Imola last weekend. With very little to choose in performance terms between the two cars, both teams are continuing to push hard to improve their packages as much as possible. However, with F1 teams knowing they need to commit as much resource as possible to developing the all-new 2022 challenger, there will soon come a point where they will have to decide when to abandon the current project. Red Bull motorsport advisor Marko reckons, however, that one of the consequences for his team and Mercedes if things remain as close is that both will have to keep pushing on beyond the point that is ideal to stop. He is clear that Red Bull needs to knuckle down and do everything to win the title, which is why he welcomes the buzz the team's form has delivered. "We need this euphoria, and also the passion and enthusiasm," he … [Read more...] about Knife-edge F1 battle risks Red Bull/Mercedes development war
