They say that true heroes don’t try to do it alone. True to that spirit, HomeAid Houston is celebrating its “HomeAid Heroes” of 2022. These local companies partnered with HomeAid Houston, a charity of the Greater Houston Builders Association, in their mission to help people experiencing or at risk of homelessness build new lives through construction, community engagement, and education. Houston-area companies are provided an opportunity to give back to the Houston community through the HomeAid Heroes program. As a HomeAid Hero, companies can decide how they would like to participate — through a preset amount every time they celebrate a business milestone, whether it’s the sale of a home, a window installation, closing of a mortgage, etc. or simply donate a certain amount each quarter or year. These dollars make it possible for community homeless shelters to have small renovations completed at no cost to the service provider. In this way, local companies, regardless of their focus, … [Read more...] about HomeAid Houston celebrates its Heroes of 2022

Team Redline and R8G Esports win 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual
Listen to this article The 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual has been won overall by Team Redline, with its #2 entry driven by Felipe Drugovich, Felix Rosenqvist, Luke Bennett and Chris Lulham. In GTE, the #888 R8G Esports Ferrari of Alexander Smolyar, Scott Andrews, Timotej Andonovski and Erhan Jajovski headed the class. The race was halted due to two red flags in the opening six hours, then at dawn Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen retired the #1 Team Redline entry following a disconnection while leading. The event was also host to some extremely close-quartered racing. At the start, it was Verstappen who took the initiative, scything past the pole-sitting Porsche Supercup driver Laurin Heinrich in the #20 Porsche Coanda entry. But the Team Redline driver was momentarily held up exiting his pitbox at the end of the opening stint and combined with Porsche running an alternative strategy, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer was back ahead. Book World: What Egyptians wish for
By Deena Mohamed Pantheon. 568 pp. $35 - - - In the opening pages of Deena Mohamed's graphic novel "Shubeik Lubeik," we watch a televised public service announcement in which a woman purchases a "delesleep," a "third-class wish" granted not by a genie in a bottle but one confined to an aluminum can. When the being within emerges, the woman makes a simple request. "I want to lose weight! About," here she hesitates a moment, "ten kilos?" The results are as immediate as they are horrifying. Her right leg and left arm fall to the ground, bloodlessly severed by the force she has unleashed. Her wish granted, the woman screams. Welcome to a Cairo where donkeys talk, dragons destroy villages and posh suburban homes can hide under a cloak of invisibility. Cairo - the real city, that is - has long been a nerve center of Arab comic art's revival. Across the Middle East, political cartoonists and caricaturists have been experimenting with strips and visual stories for more than a … [Read more...] about Book World: What Egyptians wish for
Oregon launches abortion hotline offering free legal advice
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon is launching a new abortion hotline offering free legal advice to callers, moving to further defend abortion access after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last summer and eliminated federal protections for the procedure. The state's Department of Justice announced the initiative Monday. It is modeled on similar hotlines launched by the attorneys general of New York and Delaware, as states where abortion remains legal have seen an increase in the number of patients traveling from areas where the procedure has been banned or restricted. “The Hotline will fill an important need in our state for callers to understand the status of our reproductive health laws, including issues related to abortion access,” Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum said in a news release. “This is especially important because we share a border with Idaho, which has a … [Read more...] about Oregon launches abortion hotline offering free legal advice
Texas is just one stop on the murder-mystery road trip of ‘Poker Face’
Rian Johnson never met a legendary gumshoe he didn't want to makeover for the 21st century. The writer-director is more than a murder-mystery junkie. He's like the top recruiter at Clue Academy, finding modern equivalents to the best minds in fictional crime-solving. Remember, Johnson launched his career with Brick , a clever teenage spin on the twisty investigations (and hard-boiled patter) of Philipe Marlowe and Sam Spade. The last few years, he's minted a hit franchise on the Agatha Christie playbook, introducing a Southern-fried Hercule Poirot in the Benoit Blanc mysteries Knives Out and Glass Onion . And now comes Poker Face , his delightful new 10-episode series for Peacock, which is a blatant, contemporary spin on the weekly deductions of Columbo , down to the rumpled appearance of the blue-collar sleuth on the case. Nothing if not deeply online, Johnson has built his show around a bit of fan casting, fulfilling a recent internet campaign to slot Natasha … [Read more...] about Texas is just one stop on the murder-mystery road trip of ‘Poker Face’
