The Chicago Assembly is the brand's longest continually operating assembly plant. Ford is in Chicago to introduce the 2019 Ford F-150 Harley Davidson together with the Tuscany Motor Company - while not an official product of the Blue Oval, the special edition truck is really a sight to behold. That’s about all the company has to show its fans in the Windy City but there’s also one major announcement that was made during the show – Ford is investing one billion dollars in its Chicago Assembly and Stamping Plants to expand production capacity for several new SUVs. The automaker says it will hire 500 new employees bringing the total workforce at the two plants to approximately 5,800. In Chicago, Ford will build the new Explorer, including the Explorer ST and Explorer Hybrid, and the all-new Police Interceptor Utility, as well as the new generation Lincoln Aviator. It will live on in Asian markets as the Grandeur. Say goodbye to the Hyundai Azera, at least in the United States. The Korean automaker’s official word on changes for the 2018 model year include a revamped Accent and Elantra GT, not to mention the all-new Kona compact crossover. Other familiar models either carry over or receive modest facelifts, except for the full-size Azera sedan which officially exits the U.S. market. The car isn’t dead, however – it will continue on in its home market where it’s called Grandeur. The Fusion-based sedan's days are probably counted. Rumors of Lincoln discontinuing the Continental luxury sedan are nothing new. We first heard them in March last year, about a year after the car's market launch, and then again in September 2018. With monthly sales numbers in the low hundreds this year, despite the recently introduced Continental Coach Door edition, the model could indeed be facing the chopping block, at least in the United States. A new report from Automotive News shines more light on Ford’s plans about the Continental. Currently, the company assembles the model at its Flat Rock Assembly alongside the Ford Mustang. However, two brand new all-electric crossovers for the Ford and Lincoln brands are destined to go into production at the same factory sometime in late 2022 or early 2023 for the 2023 model year. Essentially, this move should mark the end of the American production of the Continental. Both sets of doors open a full 90 degrees to create quite an entrance when getting in or out of this big sedan. UPDATE: We were curious about Lincoln making the Continental Coach Door available in limited numbers in 2020 and reached out to the automaker for more details. "We have not announced the specific quantity for the 20MY run, but we will keep them limited so that the edition remains special and unique," Anika Salceda-Wycoco, Lincoln Communications Manager, told us." So if you can't get the Coach Door model this year, then there's still a chance to put one in your garage in the future. The rumors are true because coach doors, also known as suicide doors, are coming back to the Lincoln Continental after becoming a famous part of the model's design in the 1960s. Unfortunately, the company will build just 80 of them for the 2019 model year, meaning these special sedans will be a very rare sight on the road. A few more of them will arrive for the 2020 model … [Read more...] about Lincoln Continental Suicide Doors Return With Special Edition [UPDATE]
