Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have announced that they are set to acquire Nokia Corporation’s Here mapping and location services business. The deal, which is reported to be €2.8 billion (RM11.8 billion), brings to an end months of speculation – in May, the consortium was said to be making a bid for the Finnish company’s mapping division. The automotive trio stated via a statement that the acquisition is intended to secure the long term availability of Here’s products and services as an open, independent and value creating platform for cloud-based maps and other mobility services accessible to all customers from the automotive industry and other sectors. The three partners will each hold an equal stake in Here, with none of them seeking to acquire a majority interest. Subject to the approval of the relevant antitrust authorities, the transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2016. The automakers add that the acquisition will lay the foundations … [Read more...] about Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz jointly acquire Nokia’s Here mapping business for US$2.8 billion

BMW’s next all new Mini could be closely related to Mercedes’ next A-class, Autocar has learned – and it could also have a Smart-based little brother. Back in June, we published a story explaining that the rival German car-makers were seriously considering co-operating on the development of a new, front-wheel-drive car architecture. The new shared platform would be designed to give BMW the greater flexibility it desires to expand the Mini range, while giving Mercedes a cheaper and more conventional means to build a replacement for the A- and B-class models. Many within the car industry expect the announcement of this joint venture to make headlines at the Frankfurt motor show in September. And this week, five weeks ahead of the German show, there have been reports that BMW has already got a smaller version of the Mini in its product plan. Born out of necessity The background to the deal is one rooted in the problems faced by BMW and Mercedes in building their current … [Read more...] about BMW and Mercedes team up to think small

BMW and Mercedes-Benz took a bit longer than other manufacturers to report their final sales figures for 2011, and some analysts believe the delay may have something to do with the fact that both automakers were vying for the sales crown among luxury makes. Long-time champion Lexus suffered production setbacks at the hands of the earthquake and tsunami disasters in Japan last March, which left the door open for the two German companies to make a move for the top slot. In the end, Mercedes-Benz announced its numbers first. BMW followed suit by revealing the company had bested its rival by fewer than 3,000 units. But the story doesn't end there. According to TheDetroitBureau.com, Mercedes-Benz may have been pulling a few tricks in an attempt to nab the top spot. The site claims Mercedes-Benz was offering sizable bonuses to dealers who agreed to take a certain number of vehicles into their test fleets. Those models could then be listed as sold before being plopped onto the used lot with … [Read more...] about Did BMW and Mercedes engage in a game of sales chicken?
Audi, as the four-ring automaker beat out both Mercedes-Benz and BMW in sales. Bloomberg reports that it was America's appetite for CUVs like the Q5 and ancient Q7 that helped Audi move nearly 153,000 units around the globe. It's not all good news, though. Audi's worldwide sales only jumped by 2.5 percent, compared to BMW and Mercedes, whose sales increased 5.6 and 11 percent, respectively. On top of that, BMW is still the best-selling brand (of the three, anyway) so far in 2015, outselling Audi by roughly 9,000 units and Mercedes by about 23,000 vehicles.Considering the faster growth of its rivals, it's unclear if Audi will be able to hang onto the monthly sales crown beyond April, or if BMW will continue its reign as the world's biggest luxury automaker. … [Read more...] about Audi tops BMW and Mercedes in luxury sales
Though ballooning inflation and dipping growth prospects are slowing the economy, Germany’s BMW and Mercedes-Benz are betting big on Indians’ voracious appetite for luxury cars. While BMW has lined up a series of launches in new and existing segments, new sales initiatives and a capacity enhancement plan that can effectively double its production in India, Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to unveil new products and facelifts next year, largely aimed at sprucing up consumer sentiment and continuing with the growth trend. Unfazed by the broader sluggishness in the passenger car market and riding on its stomping growth of 70 per cent year-to-date,BMW, the biggest manufacturer and seller of luxury cars in India, is launching a luxury convertible next month. The Munich-headquartered company is likely to launch the Mini range of cars in the first half of next year. Though the sizes of the models are as big as Maruti’s Swift, they will cost four times the price of a … [Read more...] about BMW and Mercedes attack India
It's August, and summer is in full swing. Speaking of which, there's nothing quite like the sound emitted from the crisp crack of a home run. Lexus seems to have surely hit one with the newest entrant in the popular luxury compact crossover segment with the all-new 2015 Lexus NX 200t. Sales of the model were up 23% last month, hitting an all-time high. Interestingly, the big sales jump was not due to any barn-burning rebates or cash back offers--they are just not offered on this particular model. Nonetheless, sales still spiked in July helping Lexus to accelerate past both BMW and Mercedes-Benz in sales for the first time this year. Compact Luxury Crossover Side-by-Side » Lease DealsSo how are they moving so many? One answer could be leasing. That, and the fact that the NX 200t seems to be priced just right. You'll notice that the base price for an NX costs significantly less than its German competition. But that's not to say it's low on content. Quite the contrary, in … [Read more...] about Lexus Sales Bolstered by NX Crossover, Beat Out BMW and Mercedes-Benz
BMW and Mercedes have been rivals since 1929, but Detroit News columnist Christine Tierney reckons the two automakers are eyeing each other across the dance floor. Tierney points-out that Daimler-Benz (Mercedes to you and me) hooked-up with Chrysler to fend off the possibility of a hostile takeover. Now that the Chrysler divorce is going through, they're even more vulnerable than before. What's more, Tierney says the folks sheltering under the three-pointed star are "increasingly threatened" by Porsche's takeover of the VW Group. As Mercedes needs to off-load some of their R&D costs, and BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer just declared his intention to "wring out" $8b in savings to bolster his company's margins, and BMW is working with GM and Mercedes on hybrid powertrains… We reckon this Yenta's got a yen for mischief, and under-estimates the weight of history and the bad blood that flows between the Germans. Still, just ask Dr. Z; stranger things have happened. … [Read more...] about Detroit News: BMW and Mercedes to Merge?
Do you think that BMW and Mercedes are manly brands? Automotive News [sub] has a different opinion. BMW and Mercedes look childish, the industry rag says. Reason for this decree: The inability of both German luxury brands to show their numbers on time. AN sees two possible explanations for the delay. One explanation “is that the two companies have woefully inadequate sales-tracking software.”AN does not buy into that one. AN thinks the more likely explanation is a playground showdown, where two boys compare their didis: “Show me yours!” “No, you show me yours first!”Each company wanted to see the other’s sales numbers first, so that it would know how high its figures would have to be to grab the U.S. luxury-market crown from the other. By the time the numbers came out, I was wondering whether that would be the end of the gamesmanship. Might the No. 2 brand “discover” some extra numbers that put it ahead? As in “Oops, we … [Read more...] about AN: BMW and Mercedes Are Childish
