Too many politicians practice the reverse, with terrible consequences for the American people. But although I don’t believe in partisanship, I very much believe in the importance of politics and elections. That’s how we make change and progress in a democracy. Over the years, I have supported candidates in both parties who were willing to break with partisanship and the special interests and seek common ground around solutions to make America better. I’ve focused my philanthropy partly around bipartisan gun safety, environmental and immigration reform measures, and my political giving has been focused around those priorities as well. Michael Bloomberg gives $300 million to Hopkins for U.S. health initiative
Businessman and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has given the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health $300 million to focus on five challenges the school's experts say are contributing to a decline in Americans' life expectancy.The gift, which coincides with the school's 100th anniversary, is the largest donation ever made to the school, and the first to focus solely on domestic health challenges, rather than the global illnesses, such as HIV and malaria, on which the school has made its mark.The gift brings Bloomberg's total donations to Johns Hopkins institutions to $1.5 billion. Bloomberg Philanthropies wants to help grow Baltimore arts groups
Baltimore is among seven new cities where Bloomberg Philanthropies plans to invest a total of $43 million in arts and culture nonprofits.Bloomberg Philanthropies is expanding its Arts Innovation and Management program, which works to strengthen small and midsize cultural organizations. The organization will aim to invest in about 200 groups across Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Baltimore; Denver; New Orleans; Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.Bloomberg Philanthropies asked 15 Baltimore organizations to apply for the invitation-only grants on Thursday. Goldman Sachs, Bloomberg Philanthropies invest $10M to bring small-business program to Baltimore
Goldman Sachs and Bloomberg Philanthropies are scheduled to announce a $10 million investment Wednesday to launch a training and loan program for small businesses in Baltimore.The program, called 10,000 Small Businesses, is intended to give small businesses a jolt of energy, new ideas — and maybe a little cash — to jump-start growth and spur hiring.“This is for the betterment of Baltimore,” Mayor Catherine Pugh said. “To have this kind of investment in our city, I think, bodes well for Baltimore.”The announcement is to coincide with a graduation ceremony at Center Stage Wednesday for about 60 business owners who participated in two pilot sessions of the program earlier this year.
