Alain Prost’s engineer reveals when Ayrton Senna tension began within McLaren garage
The most famous F1 teammate rivalry, that of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, took a while to bubble up after an amicable start at McLaren. While now well known as the best example of how competitive teammates can turn bitter and ruthless towards each other in their quests for individual glory, the start of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost’s relationship at the dominant McLaren team in 1988 actually proved quite straightforward. But, as the races ticked by, it seemed inevitable that, at some point, the two highly competitive drivers would develop a more strained dynamic, and McLaren’s Neil Oatley suspects two incidents in particular set off the domino effect that led to the all-out war that developed between Senna and Prost in their title deciders at Suzuka in 1989 and ’90. “It was good. I mean, there wasn’t really a lot of tension, particularly in ’88,” Oatley, Prost’s race engineer at McLaren that year, told the Beyond the Grid podcast about the first few months of Senna and Prost’s … [Read more...] about Alain Prost’s engineer reveals when Ayrton Senna tension began within McLaren garage

Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Red Bull’s chief engineer of car engineering Paul Monaghan said the latest revision to the RB19’s diffuser follows a trend adopted by Williams, among other teams. Hamilton and Russell were seeking tow from Sainz when they collided – Mercedes · RaceFans
Mercedes have shed further light on the bizarre collision between its two drivers which occured during qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free George Russell was given a formal warning by the stewards after making contact with his team mate Lewis Hamilton on the pit straight. The pair were overtaking Carlos Sainz Jnr’s Ferrari at the time. The team’s head of trackside engineering Andrew Shovlin said the incident occured because both drivers were trying to use Sainz’s car to get a slipstream to improve their lap times. “The drivers were trying to find a car finishing a lap in order to get a slingshot starting the lap themselves,” said Shovlin in a video released by the team . “So that will give them more straight-line speed. “You can find around a tenth, maybe a little bit more on the straight. That car that was finishing then peels in and they can then conduct the rest of the lap in clear air.” However the two … [Read more...] about Hamilton and Russell were seeking tow from Sainz when they collided – Mercedes · RaceFans

Facelifted BMW 1 Series Spied On Nurburgring With Less Camouflage
The current generation BMW 1 Series has been around since 2019, which means the time has come for the entry-level model from Munich to get a mid-cycle refresh. Work on the facelifted hatchback continues as a new prototype is spied with less camouflage than before lapping the Nurburgring. While this is obviously a fully disguised trial vehicle, there seems to be some progress with the front fascia. The lower section of the bumper now shows more of its design, which appears to be dominated by a large trapezoidal grille with triangle air openings at the sides. This looks like a more aggressive layout compared to the outgoing model and it is worth mentioning that this is likely the M135i version of the hatchback. This easily explains the larger diamond-cut finish wheels, which come from the pre-facelifted model, and the quad exhaust pipes at the back.
