Jamie L. LaReau Detroit Free Press Published 8:18 AM EDT Oct 4, 2018 Almost no one knows trade agreements better than Arkansas car dealer and political insider Mack McLarty. McLarty has advised several presidents on trade: Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush (the initial force behind the North American Free Trade Agreement); and childhood friend President Bill Clinton (McLarty served as his White House chief of staff ). Today, McLarty is chairman of McLarty Cos., a fourth-generation family-owned dealership business in Little Rock. He also is chairman and co-founder of advisory firm McLarty Associates in D.C. In 1993, he worked with Clinton to finalize and ferry NAFTA through Congress. "We had to get our economic plan passed first," McLarty told the Free Press on Wednesday. "We got that done. Then, we started on NAFTA in early summer." Congress passed NAFTA in early fall … [Read more...] about USMCA trade deal: 4 takeaways from a NAFTA expert

Josh Wingrove Bloomberg News Published 4:19 p.m. UTC Jun 8, 2018 Doug Ford, whose populist message of smaller government and tax cuts drew comparisons to Donald Trump, will be the next premier of Canada’s most populous province and economic engine. Ford’s Progressive Conservatives won 76 of Ontario’s 124 districts in Thursday’s election, according to Elections Ontario. His decisive win ends 15 years of Liberal Party rule, and his majority government will be able to run the province without the support of another party. Ford, 53, a former city councilor and brother of the late Toronto mayor Rob Ford, ran on a “For the People” platform of tax cuts for businesses and the middle class, along with lower prices for gasoline and electricity. While the tax cuts, a pledge to reduce government “waste,” and his plain-spoken tone evoked elements of Trump, there are key differences: immigration played virtually no role in the campaign, and … [Read more...] about Doug Ford wins Ontario vote on populist message
The 2017 Volkswagen Golf R is a GTI plus. It’s an expensive Golf. A fast Golf. A super Golf. It draws the line where VW stops and Audi begins. It’s also a hot hatch that does everything supremely well without breaking your spine in half, and therein lies its charm. Fling it over a snow-covered back road in Canadian winter with a couple of bros sitting in the back, and you’ll instantly understand its purpose. Bring it on a track, and you’ll know where your extra ten grand went over a GTI. (Full disclosure: Volkswagen Canada agreed that I could bring the Golf R at the Sanair speed circuit to try out its claimed performance. They also told me that if I’d break it, I’d have to buy it.) What Is It? Thank God, something that isn’t a crossover! It’s a humble little Volkswagen that seats five and has a big hatch out the back that will engulf 52.7 cu-ft of cargo space when its rear seats are folded flat. That’s more than in an Infiniti … [Read more...] about The Volkswagen Golf R Is Worth It
Costly pickup truck launch going well, Barra says Free Price Quote From a Local Dealer View Special Offers No Obligation, Fast & Simple Free New Car Quote Change Car Ford started Detroit’s round of first-quarter earnings calls with the blunt news it is largely getting out of the car business, with only the Mustang and a Focus a few years from now. FCA was second to bat and CEO Sergio Marchionne talked about troubles launching the new Ram which is taking longer and costing more than forecast. Rounding out the calls was clean-up batter General Motors. Yes, GM has new full-size pickups launching this fall, but the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are doing so uneventfully, says CEO Mary Barra. Which is good, because trucks are a $65 billion business. Watch 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE Hot Lap! - 2017 Best Driver's Car Contender ? It has filled me with huge pleasure to see the name Giorgio Pantano once again aligned with top level racing, announced as he was last night as the replacement for the unfortunately injured Justin Wilson for the next two IndyCar races. It is easy to forget just what a mega talent Giorgio Pantano truly is… and so here, whether you’ve never heard of him or whether you’re questioning why he’s the right man to step into Wilson’s seat, is an article I wrote for F1 Racing Magazine, which was printed in January 2011. …………………………………………….. “When I arrived in go karts at the top level, racing in World and European championships, he was winning all of them. I thought that guy was very special, a very good talent.” Fernando Alonso is not a man who hands out plaudits to rivals on a whim. A double Formula 1 world champion and one of the hardest racers of his … [Read more...] about Giorgio Pantano… and why he deserves his shot.
