If you’re not in New York City, the long-planned L train shutdown probably doesn’t have much to do with you. But in this city, it’s a line that 275,000 riders rely on daily, and its looming shutdown for long-term maintenance caused people to move to new neighborhoods, sell their homes, quit their jobs and even buy motorcycles. Today, New Yorkers got a surprise—the shutdown isn’t happening. This sounds like it could be good, but it’s not, and there’s a bigger takeaway here about how America’s cities plan public transportation. The L train, which connects Manhattan and Brooklyn, was flooded during Hurricane Sandy. It supposed to be fully shut down for 15 months beginning in April to allow for repairs. Now, Governor Amazon Cuomo, who controls the subway, says that won’t happen. The details aren’t totally clear but an MTA official estimated that the work would take up to 20 months, or five months longer than the full shutdown. … [Read more...] about New York Won’t Shut Down A Major Subway Line Now, But It’s Actually Worse This Way

Ad wars try to define Rep. Bishop, Slotkin in heated U.S. House race
Melissa Nann Burke The Detroit News Published 11:29 PM EDT Sep 26, 2018 The ad wars are firing up one of the nation’s hottest congressional races, as Republican Rep. Mike Bishop scrambles to defend his seat against his toughest opponent ever. Democrat Elissa Slotkin is hawking her national-security credentials and seizing on the issue of health care to make headway in Michigan’s traditionally GOP-leaning 8th District, depicting Bishop as a career politician wedded to the “special interests” who fund his campaigns. Bishop and his allies are painting Slotkin as an outsider from Washington who never got confirmed by the Senate for her last Defense Department post after clashing with Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, on the Obama administration’s Iraq policy. Slotkin has raised more money than Bishop every quarter. Nonpartisan groups consider the contest a toss-up heading into the last seven weeks before the Nov. 6 election. The … [Read more...] about Ad wars try to define Rep. How New York Became the Center of the Fight Against Uber and the Gig Economy Lie
The scene outside of New York City Hall in late May was several years in the making. Dozens of taxi and livery drivers from across the city had joined together outside the ornate structure to call for immediate action to a growing crisis. A fifth driver in the city had committed suicide in recent days, a devastating byproduct of what friends and family attributed to an overwhelming debt load that he couldn’t handle once ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft arrived in New York. More and more drivers started competing for fares, struggling to net a livable wage. It’s a trend that has only accelerated over time, a trend that the city had a chance to prevent. At least it did, once. When Uber launched in New York in 2011, the company described its vision as a win-win for everyone. “Uber brings the convenience of a yellow cab, the quality of a luxury limo, and adds an Uber cherry on top—on-demand mobile requests,” the company said. The rosy pitch … [Read more...] about How New York Became the Center of the Fight Against Uber and the Gig Economy Lie
Five Minutes with Brandon Etheridge, new Ravens general counsel
At 31, Brandon Etheridge — the Ravens' new general counsel — is the same age as quarterback Joe Flacco. It's an age when quarterbacks are often in midcareer. But general counsels of NFL clubs? Older attorneys typically hold those positions."I think it happened a lot quicker than I expected it would," Etheridge, the Baltimore-born and former Yale football player, said of his speedy career ascent. "If not the youngest, I'm pretty close to it in terms of general counsels in the National Football League."But his legal background suited the post. He served two years in New York City as a counsel to NFL team executives on issues — including player contracts and health care — related to the league's collective bargaining agreement. Before that, he was an associate in Washington with the law firm Covington & Burling, where his clients included the NFL.Last week, the league announced a research initiative aimed at reducing head injuries."I think the Ravens especially … [Read more...] about Five Minutes with Brandon Etheridge, new Ravens general counsel
