The seven-time NASCAR Cup champion has tested at Barber Motorsports Park, Sebring and Laguna Seca, and has found that aside from trying to exploit his Chip Ganassi Racing-Honda’s aerodynamic grip, he’s also been too “gentle” on his tires on out-laps. He described an IndyCar as “a monster – that's the best way I can put it. There's so much power, so much downforce, so much grip. It's wild to drive.” To help convert from more than two decades of stock car experience, he has added to his IndyCar experience with Formula 3 outings – something he has found rewarding on more than one level. “One big challenge I'm dealing with is trying to get the tires up to their peak pressure and peak temperature when there's still enough grip in the tire,” said the 45-year-old Californian who accrued 83 wins in NASCAR Cup. “I'm more delicate with the car than I need to be, so my fast lap is two to three laps after the desired fast lap, when the tire has the most ability in it. “Being able … [Read more...] about Johnson: Tire temps a big challenge in “monster” IndyCar

McLaughlin upbeat despite crash on IndyCar debut
McLaughlin, who will join Team Penske full-time in the US series next season , made steady progress in the first half of the race, moving from his 21st starting spot to 17th. However his cameo appearance came to an abrupt end on a Lap 47 restart, an attempt at passing Marco Andretti leading to contact that tipped the Kiwi into a spin. That left him him in the path of Rinus Veekay, the subsequent damage forcing the Supercars champion out of the race, while the Dutchman was able to continue. Far out, best day of my life bar my wedding,” McLaughlin told the TV broadcast. “The Shell V-Power Nitro+ IndyCar was going well and then I just tried to make a move, I tried to block Marco. “I felt like I was there or thereabouts and just had half a … [Read more...] about McLaughlin upbeat despite crash on IndyCar debut
Contract year at Penske won’t affect how Power drives
Power finished fifth in last year’s championship after two wins, five poles, a string of misfortunes and a couple of driving errors. Now as he approaches contract renewal time, Power was asked if that affects his style or approach to the season – his 13 th with Penske, his 12 th as a fulltimer with the legendary squad. “No, it doesn't,” he said. “It’s really the same effort that I put in because I put so much effort in every time. “I so badly want to win. Same fire, internal fire burning. Just do what I do; obviously do my best.” As usual, the Toowoomba, Australia native cited a good start to the season as key to his title aspirations. Not since his championship year has Power scored a win in the first four races of a season, despite taking seven poles across those 24 races. “We've started the last four seasons in a really bad way,” said Power who has accumulated 39 wins and 62 poles. “It certainly isn't speed that's the issue. It's our bad days are just too … [Read more...] about Contract year at Penske won’t affect how Power drives
Palou says he has better chance to win than Alonso or Sainz
Sainz has moved from McLaren to Ferrari in the off-season for his seventh year in F1, while two-time World Champion Alonso returns to F1 to join the Alpine team after a two-year-hiatus which included WEC Championship, a second Le Mans victory and a triumph in the Rolex 24 Hours. However, neither Alpine (formerly Renault) nor Ferrari won a grand prix last year, whereas Chip Ganassi Racing captured five wins and the NTT IndyCar Series championship in 2020, and Palou says he’s expecting to win races and contend for the championship in his sophomore IndyCar season. Asked by a Spanish reporter, “Who of these three drivers do you think has a bigger chance to win a race this year? Alex Palou… Fernando Alonso… Carlos Sainz?” Palou replied: “Me! I have to say me, right? Yeah, me, no doubts about it.” Quizzed on whether he will be able to fight for victories even this first year with Chip, he responded, “100 percent, yep.” Read Also: Sainz coy on rumoured crash in Jerez … [Read more...] about Palou says he has better chance to win than Alonso or Sainz
Dixon still evolving his style after six titles
Dixon spoke candidly to Motorsport.com last year about how, despite scoring four wins and his sixth championship, there were several performances that left them either disappointed or bemused. For examples, he cited the car’s performance on black tires on some tracks, and difficulties with the handling of the car, even when it was fast. Although he believes the issues have been overcome, he says the nature of winter testing means he and the Ganassi-Honda team won’t know for sure how much progress they’ve made until further into the season. Dixon recalled: “It was kind of weird. I think '19 we maybe had the best average of the field for qualifying position, and then '20 was a pretty rough year, especially on road courses for our team as a whole. Street courses were OK, ovals were pretty good… with the exception of Iowa where we had a problem. “We have some ideas. I think the problem that we've faced in recent years is when you do this testing, especially in winter months, … [Read more...] about Dixon still evolving his style after six titles
