A Snake’s tale: 50 years later, Don Prudhomme to drive again in Mexican 1000 (mile) off-road race
Starting Sunday, thousands of Mexican officials and race fans will gather together from Ensenada to San Jose del Cabo, on the lookout for a slithering Snake on four wheels. As in legendary drag racer Don “Snake” Prudhomme, who will take part in the five-day National Off-Road Racing Association’s (NORRA) Mexican 1000 Off-road Rally in Baja, Mexico. While the part about Prudhomme being entered in the race is unique in and of itself, it’s the back story that makes this one of the best racing tales in a long time: * Prudhomme will once again take part in the race 50 years after trying to make the 1968 race. You read that right: 50 YEARS LATER! * Unfortunately, his bid in 1968 was cut short when his team was knocked out of competition the night before the race began due to a blown motor. * Prudhomme has waited five decades to make another run at the 1000, and now he’ll do so at the age of 77. That’s also 24 years after he retired as an active drag racer … [Read more...] about A Snake’s tale: 50 years later, Don Prudhomme to drive again in Mexican 1000 (mile) off-road race

A Year In The Life of Eric Rickman
We’ve barely scratched the surface of the Eric Rickman photo files. For this issue, the editor looked at several hundred images Rick shot during calendar year 1958 and selected more than 100 to give you some small idea what this tireless, inventive, always-eager Petersen Publishing Co. (PPC) employee was doing during those 365 days. We don’t think he ever took an actual day off; a vacation for Rick was going on assignment to Florida, or Mexico, or New England to cover a racing event or car show. Flipping through the covers and pages of 1958-1959 issues, we see what we would call the full spectrum of hot rodding: roadsters and coupes, mild-to-wild custom cars, dragsters, modified engines (from Hemis to Offies), the annual Indy-car preview and, yes, a few of Detroit’s latest offerings in stock form. Whereas other years profiled thus far have veered into heavy coverage of multiple offshoots such as drag boats, go-karts, and fiberglass kit cars (with many others to come … [Read more...] about A Year In The Life of Eric Rickman
24 Hours of Le Mans Update: Weather Wrecks the Best-Laid Plans
It rains in France; everyone knows that. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which is deep in France, the only question is when it will rain. If it starts to downpour as your car is sitting on the grid on slicks, waiting to be waved off on the opening parade lap, that’s very bad news for you. With the clock ticking down to the 3:00 p.m. start of the 84th running of this 24-hour classic, a slow drizzle steadily devolved into a pissing annoyance, which devolved into a full biblical deluge. And Le Mans luck, that highly fickle finger of fate, began to pick winners and losers.First to suffer was the No. 67 Ford GT, which the crew suddenly pulled off the grid just minutes before the parade lap and wheeled ignominiously on its dolly into the garage. Gearbox problems already. The transmission is a known weak point of the mid-engine megabuck GT (heck, every team has had gearbox problems over the years), but Ford engineers felt they had the problem licked. Well, that was the brave face … [Read more...] about 24 Hours of Le Mans Update: Weather Wrecks the Best-Laid Plans
What’s The Best Car Movie? My Take: American Graffiti
‘American Graffiti’ exploded onto the movie screen in the early 70s, a little over 10 years after it happened 1962, according to the movie plot.“Where were you in ’62?” became the question of the day in the movie trailer. Back when, most of us wished that we had been old enough to cruise around in the cool ’62-era iron shown in ‘American Graffiti’. Today, we wish we would have been born after that. The movie was essentially a coming-of-age movie that followed the lives of several people over the course of a long night’s journey into a drag race at dawn. Most of the actors were unknowns at the time, but some went on to major fame later in their careers, while others never really went beyond their 15 minutes of fame in ‘American Graffiti’.The cars in the movie will always be the biggest stars for most car guys. There were plenty of classic rides in the movie. 1962 was a time when teenagers jumped behind the … [Read more...] about What’s The Best Car Movie? My Take: American Graffiti
