Spielberg’s Red Bull Ring circuit is characterized by its elevation changes, as well as for its beautiful natural backdrop: panoramic views of Styria’s green countryside. After 18 consecutive races from 1970 to 1981, the Spielberg Circuit was reduced before hosting another 6 races from 1997 to 2003. It then became impracticable and was bought and rebuilt in the following years by Red Bull’s Dietrich Mateschiltz. Renamed the Red Bull Ring, the track was reopened for new thrilling Austrian F1 action. Join us later in the afternoon for the latest updates and results from the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Styria as the qualifying session for the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix is about to get underway, with Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen at the wheel of the SF71H, ready to challenge Mercedes and Red Bull for pole position in Austria. Red Bull Ring, home of the Formula 1 Austrian Grand PrixEnlarge PhotoRound nine of the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship takes us this weekend to the city of Spielberg, where the Red Bull Ring, home of the Austrian Grand Prix, is located. At a short 2.688 miles in length, it takes just 68 seconds to complete a lap of the Red Bull Ring, which is made up of only nine corners—the fewest of any circuit on the calendar. There are four long straights, each one preceded by a slow corner, and that places the engineering emphasis on traction and straight-line speed. The surface is low grip and low abrasion, with the track getting progressively quicker as the weekend goes on. Even though the asphalt is relatively new, the track is quite bumpy in places, which makes it difficult to find consistent grip. Pirelli has nominated its soft, supersoft and ultrasoft compounds for the race, the same as the previous round in France. One other issue to look out for during the Austrian race is the … [Read more...] about 2018 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix preview
Hot off the heels of France, we head to Austria for round nine of the Formula One World Championship. The team takes to the Red Bull Ring for the second leg of F1’s first ever triple-header, before returning to the UK for the race in Silverstone. Located high in the hills, the Austrian circuit is a popular and familiar track amongst all drivers. Now under the ownership of Red Bull, who have brought this previously derelict track back to life, Austria has a chance to re-establish itself back on the F1 calendar and how wonderful would it be if it could do it. We need more tracks like The Red Bull Ring as Formula One maintains its soul. Join us later in the afternoon for the latest updates and results from the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Styria as the second practice session for the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix is about to get underway, with Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen at the wheel of the SF71H, ready to evaluate the ideal set-up ahead of the qualifying session and the race on … [Read more...] about 2018 Austrian Grand Prix, Practice 2: live results and updates
The old Österreichring was the type of track you don't see too much in modern F1. It had fast-sweeping curves, incredible climbs, was pretty quick and an excellent test of skill. It was perhaps even a classic. The last grand prix held on that layout was in 1987. Significant changes were made in the mid-1990s, partly for safety reasons, and the track was reduced from 5.942 km to 4.326 km with the faster corners being removed. Now known as the Red Bull Ring and formerly the A1 Ring (from 1997-2011) the circuit lost a lot of its character but still retained some; the steep ascent to the tight first turn is an unusual but striking sight, perhaps only matched by the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. Still, it makes a nice change to some of the more modern from-scratch Hermann Tilke-designed circuits on the calendar (Tilke actually did the remodeling here, as he did with Paul Ricard). Anyway, that's enough history. We have a race this weekend in a … [Read more...] about Austrian Grand Prix 2018 preview: Advantage Mercedes, party time at Renault and is it time for Bottas to triumph?
What is it? The Austrian Grand Prix, the ninth round of the 2018 Formula One season and the middle weekend of Formula One's first ever triple-header. It takes place at the Red Bull Ring, on the site of the old Österreichring. It previously held F1 grands prix from 1997-2003 on this layout under the A1 Ring name but was reintroduced to the F1 calendar in 2014. The picturesque backdrop to the circuit is formed by the Styrian Hills. It's also one of F1's shorter laps, with the 2017 pole lap at just over 64 seconds. When is it? The action starts with practice on Friday June 29, qualifying taking place on Saturday June 30 and the race on July 1. What time does it start? Qualifying begins at 2pm BST on Saturday June 30 and the race starts at its now traditional time of 2.10pm BST. How can I watch it? As ever, all the coverage is screened live on Sky Sports F1. Channel 4 also have live coverage for the race weekend. Qualifying coverage starts … [Read more...] about Austrian Grand Prix 2018: What time does the race start, what TV channel is it on and what are the odds?
The dust has hardly had time to settle in France, but such is the fast pace of the Formula 1 paddock that it is time to look ahead to Round 9 and the Austrian Grand Prix. Held officially on 30 previous occasions, Austria has quite the colorful history within the sport. Ever since the return of the Austrian Grand Prix has returned to the calendar, Mercedes has dominated — taking all four of the wins, two for Nico Rosberg and one each for Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. However, Scuderia Ferrare have shown that the SF71H car has the ability to challenge the world champions for victory in the first half of the 2018 Fomula One season and the Maranello team will be focused on a better outcome of the qualifying session, in order to maximize its chances in the race. Follow us for the latest updates and results from the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Styria as the first practice session for the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix is about to get underway, with Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen … [Read more...] about 2018 Austrian Grand Prix, Practice 1: live results
The second leg of a three-race “triple header” – a stretch of three races in a row for Formula 1 – is at the Red Bull Ring for this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix. The circuit may be named for the Austrian energy drink, meaning it’s a home race for Red Bull Racing, but Mercedes has dominated at the circuit since it returned in 2014. Former Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg won twice (2014 and 2016), while Lewis Hamilton (2015) and Valtteri Bottas (2017) have one victory each. And Mercedes enters the Red Bull Ring on a high note, coming off a dominant Hamilton victory at the French Grand Prix, a win that vaulted Hamilton back into the championship lead – he leads Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel by 14 points entering Austria. Talking points ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix are below. Who will have the advantage between Mercedes and Ferrari? Mercedes and Ferrari have engaged in a tug of war throughout 2018, and each race seems to change which one has … [Read more...] about F1 Preview – 2018 Austrian Grand Prix
The Austrian Grand Prix returned to the Formula 1 calendar back in 2014, after the previous race took place back in 2003. The Grand Prix has been held at two different locations in the Zeltweg area situated in Spielberg in southeastern Austria. It was first held at an airfield there for two years, then a permanent race track called the Österreichring was built in 1969 and Formula One first raced there in 1970 and each subsequent race has been held there in three distinct periods. In 1995 and 1996, the Österreichring was refurbished and brought up to date, which allowed the race to run again in 1997. Since the larger portion of the modernised track, which was renamed A1-Ring after a sponsor, is located on the municipal territory of Spielberg, Spielberg was now given as the site of the Grand Prix. In July 2013, it was reported that the circuit’s new owners Red Bull had reached an agreement with Bernie Ecclestone to revive the Austrian GP after a ten-year absence from the … [Read more...] about 2018 Austrian Grand Prix: Scuderia Ferrari looking for their sixth win in Austria
