Listen to this article After activating a break clause in the contract with Bernie Ecclestone in 2017 due to the 5% escalator fee, a new five-year deal for Silverstone was signed with Liberty Media in 2019. Now operating with a “much more collaborative” relationship with F1’s owners, the circuit’s managing director Stuart Pringle is now “prepared to join hands and walk down the aisle for a long time” and follow the likes of Albert Park, which recently inked a 10-year contract. To bolster Silverstone’s offering alongside the blockbuster Miami GP and maiden Las Vegas race, which will arrive in 2023, the Northamptonshire track is plotting a two-pronged case. This involves making the British GP more of a “festival” while improving its eco credentials. Pringle explained to Motorsport.com: “To recognise that in Miami and with Las Vegas coming online, there is an expectation to a level of entertainment that is something that has not previously been seen at Silverstone. “It … [Read more...] about Silverstone wants festival-style F1 event like Miami, Vegas

He converted pole position into the lead with ease, and by the end of the first lap was almost two seconds clear of Lewis Hamilton . The next time by his lead had ballooned to four seconds – the updated Red Bull allowing him to reproduce the kind of dominance that was familiar from last year. Piastri set for first Alpine F1 outing in French GP practice
Listen to this article All teams are obliged to hand two FP1 sessions to rookies in 2022, with both race drivers stepping down on one occasion apiece. Piastri's two planned outings are seen as a key part of his learning process as Alpine reserve, along with extensive private running at a variety of tracks with last year's A521, conducted most recently at Qatar and Silverstone. Alpine team boss Otmar Szafnauer would only confirm that Piastri's FP1 debut is coming "soon" and that it won't be at the British GP, where the team is introducing another update package. "We can tell you it won't be Silverstone," said Szafnauer when asked about Piastri. "But it's not far off. The answer is we plan to put him in the car. It won't be that far off, but we haven't announced it yet." Given that Austria is a sprint race and thus the race drivers head straight into qualifying in the afternoon, a debut for Piastri at Alpine's home track is a logical choice. The Australian took part … [Read more...] about Piastri set for first Alpine F1 outing in French GP practice
Ocon: Alpine’s Ferrari-style upgrades are “fit and forget” parts
Listen to this article After introducing a high downforce rear wing, front wing endplate tweaks and rear brake changes at the Spanish Grand Prix back in May, Alpine has tweaked its A522 design with drag-reducing parts in Azerbaijan and Canada before presenting another substantial development package for this weekend’s Silverstone race. This includes a new floor with altered underside shape edges to add more suction over a larger surface area to improve air flow to the rear of the car and a major revision to its sidepod design that is designed to air airflow to the car’s beam wing and its rear overall. The new Alpine sidepod appears to have taken cues from the sculpted and wide concept Ferrari and Haas have been running since the new ground effect cars were first revealed ahead of pre-season testing. Ocon said in Canada that Alpine had “big hopes” for its Silverstone upgrades and when asked by Motorsport.com if he had any concerns such a major revision would take time … [Read more...] about Ocon: Alpine’s Ferrari-style upgrades are “fit and forget” parts
Williams’ British GP update ‘looks more like Red Bull car’
Alex Albon says Williams are heading in the direction of “the Red Bull car” with their Silverstone updates, but only time will tell if it comes with an extra second per lap. Williams have been slowest team on this year’s grid, the Grove team once again at the bottom of the log having scored just three points. They are hoping for a major boost up the order at this weekend’s British Grand Prix where they will introduce their Red Bull styled update. Albon’s FW44 will be fitted with a new floor sidepods and other bodywork , the Thai-British racer saying it is line with Red Bull’s RB18’s design philosophy. “It will look more towards what the rest of the grid looks like,” Albon said as per The Race. “As you’ve seen, everyone’s been going towards a certain concept or theme. As we know, everyone started a bit different, and it’s either the Ferrari concept or the Red Bull concept that seems to be adopted. “Our one looks more like the Red Bull car, but I wouldn’t call it … [Read more...] about Williams’ British GP update ‘looks more like Red Bull car’
Hamilton has ‘intriguing’ driver traits – but Russell won’t copy
George Russell has said he will not copy Lewis Hamilton’s traits as he seeks to have his own success in the sport. Being team-mates with one of only two drivers to have won seven World Championships comes with the added benefit of being able to learn from one of the best to ever compete in the sport – but Russell is eager not to copy Hamilton too closely. He has started this season in excellent form and perhaps better than even he had expected as he has finished higher than Hamilton in all but two races this season. Speaking on the Beyond the Grid podcast, Russell highlighted the example of tennis as proof that there is not just one set method for success. He said: “There are some traits that he [Hamilton] definitely carries that are really intriguing for me and I’m not going to share those now because I’m the only driver on this grid who has the luxury of being team-mates with the greatest driver of all time. “Prior to this season I was thinking about tennis and … [Read more...] about Hamilton has ‘intriguing’ driver traits – but Russell won’t copy
‘Always a risk Silverstone’s contract won’t be renewed’
Out of contract with Formula 1 after the 2024 season, Silverstone boss Stuart Pringle admits there is “always a risk” that the British Grand Prix won’t be renewed. With Formula 1 pushing for new venues, the sport racing in Miami this season with Las Vegas joining the circus in 2023, there are only so many grands prix that can given a spot on the calendar. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has made it clear that history no longer factors , and history is one thing that Silverstone has more than any other circuit. The Northamptonshire track has been on the calendar since the very beginning of the F1 World Championship back in 1950 but that doesn’t mean it will be there come 2025. Speaking exclusively to Express Sport , Pringle said: “We haven’t spoken to Formula 1 yet about the future about the next contract. I would be extraordinarily disappointed if they weren’t enthusiastic to have it. “Formula 1 tells us we are doing a great job, and they tell us that because their fans tell … [Read more...] about ‘Always a risk Silverstone’s contract won’t be renewed’
Silverstone chasing ‘festival feel’ for new long-term deal
Silverstone intends on making the British Grand Prix have a festival vibe, as it chases a new long-term deal with Formula 1. Silverstone’s current deal with F1 comes to an end after the 2024 race, but the venue for the first-ever Formula 1 Grand Prix is hopeful of securing a new long-term deal going forward. With ‘event’ Grands Prix becoming the norm and Liberty Media introducing the Miami and Las Vegas events, Silverstone is aiming to follow in the footsteps of Australia – Melbourne recently signed a new 10-year deal with F1 . With Silverstone’s location being away from major cities, based out in rural Northamptonshire, the circuit’s managing director Stuart Pringle said F1 has come to expect a certain level of non-racing entertainment over the course of a GP weekend. “To recognise that in Miami and with Las Vegas coming online, there is an expectation to a level of entertainment that is something that has not previously been seen at Silverstone,” Pringle told … [Read more...] about Silverstone chasing ‘festival feel’ for new long-term deal
In Gee Chun wins Women’s PGA title after Lexi Thompson falters late
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 BETHESDA, Md. - In Gee Chun leaned over her ball on the 18th green - at the 72nd and final hole of the Women's PGA Championship - then swung her putter back and delivered a pure, authoritative stroke. The rousing ovation and fist pump that followed after the ball vanished into the cup got the celebration started for the wire-to-wire winner in the first women's major at Congressional Country Club. "I made it," Chun said later while standing next to the glistening, oversize trophy. "I'm so happy I made it. My body is still shaking, though." She won by a stroke at 5-under-par 283. Several paces off the green stood Lexi Thompson, who moments earlier had hugged her caddie, Will Davidson, after she missed a 12-foot birdie putt that would have put her in position for a playoff. It was the last of too many misses with her least reliable club, and she was unable to protect another lead … [Read more...] about In Gee Chun wins Women’s PGA title after Lexi Thompson falters late
