After releasing a teaser on Instagram, Audi has finally unveiled a new variant of the R8 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. This is the Audi R8 V10 RWS, where the last bit of its name stands for Rear Wheel Series (not rear-wheel steering!). Yes, this is a rear-wheel drive R8, and it will be offered in limited number – 999 units with both Coupe and Spyder variants. All of them will be built exclusively by hand at the Böllinger Höfe R8 factory. Like the rest of the current R8 line-up, a 5.2 litre V10 petrol engine powers the new variant. It serves up 540 hp and 540 Nm of torque, similar to non-plus versions, and is paired with a seven-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission (no quattro here). This combination is enough to get the R8 V10 RWS from 0-100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds (3.8 seconds for the Spyder). These times are slightly slower than the all-wheel drive version – 3.5 seconds for the Coupe and 3.6 seconds for the Spyder. While the engine may be the same, … [Read more...] about Audi R8 V10 RWS

This is very much a comparison of past versus future. Both of these cars represent the best of where they come from. The BMW i8 Roadster is the convertible supercar that showcases just how bright the future of cars is. However, the Audi R8 V10 Spyder is also a convertible supercar but one that represents the best of where we came from. They’re both also around the same price, at least once you get into that pricing territory, with the i8 Roadster starting at $163,000 and the Audi R8 V10 Spyder starting at $177,000. So which one would you rather buy, the future or the past? Let’s start with specs. The BMW i8 Roadster is a mid-engine plug-in hybrid supercar. It has a carbon fiber passenger cell, like an F1 car, and lightweight thermoplastic body panels. Its powertrain consists of a 1.5 liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine and an electric motor mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox that power the rear wheels and makes 228 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. While an additional … [Read more...] about Which to Buy: BMW i8 Roadster or Audi R8 V10 Spyder?
News By Andrew Nabors April 11, 2018 Shares 2.7k Facebook LinkedIn Tweet Google+ Pin StumbleUpon Reddit Email One of these is not like the others. Audi’s 5.2L V10 has been found in the R8 for almost a decade. To keep up with the competition, it has been pushed beyond what we thought possible in the new R8 V10 Plus. Not everyone wants a small engine with turbos, so Audi’s engineers have lifted this engine directly from the Huracan LP610-4. But how does a naturally aspirated AWD autobahn rocket compare to the latest from Ferrari and McLaren? CARmagazineTV decided to compare these very different cars to find the answer. For the Italian, the 488 GTB is rated at 661 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque. McLaren’s new entry-level coupe is the 570S, horsepower measures in at 562 with the torque of 443. Not to be outdone by these new featherweights, Audi pulled this V10 directly from the Huracan for 610 hp and 413 lb-ft of rotational … [Read more...] about Ferrari 488 GTB vs McLaren 570S vs Audi R8 V10 Plus

NEW YORK, New York — Alongside the RS 5 Sportback, Audi Sport had another North American debut at the 2018 New York Auto Show: The rear-wheel-drive version of the Audi R8, which we first saw at the Frankfurt show last September. We talked to product manager Anthony Garvis about this new R8 variant and came away with six things you need to know. 1. This is the first rear-wheel-drive Audi sold in the United States. There have been front-drive Audis, and of course there have been all-wheel-drive Audis, but we’ve never had a rear-drive Audi available to us in the U.S. (And as far as we can tell, aside from a prototype Audi 100 developed with Porsche in the early 1970s, this is the first rear-drive Audi since World War II.) 2. Now we know how much Quattro weighs. Dropping the all-wheel-drive system shaves 110 pounds from the R8’s curb weight. 3. The R8s engine is the last of a dying breed… Garvis pointed out that the naturally-aspirated supercar engine is nearly … [Read more...] about Six Things You Need to Know About the Audi R8 V10 RWS
