The second generation Audi R8 is entering the special edition phase of its life with the 2018 Audi R8 V10 Plus Competition Package. It’s a lighter V10 Plus with an aero kit and tweaked suspension, it’s going to cost more, and only 10 will make it to the U.S. The Quattro AWD, 610 horsepower V10 Plus Competition is a nice break from the recent slate of rear-wheel drive Audi R8s. It’s over 28 pounds lighter than a standard V10 Plus, in part thanks to some 20-inch aluminum wheels and carbon ceramic brakes. The price is a lot heavier, though, at $238,750 including destination charge, which is over 40 grand more than the standard model. After releasing a teaser on Instagram, Audi has finally unveiled a new variant of the R8 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. This is the Audi R8 V10 RWS, where the last bit of its name stands for Rear Wheel Series (not rear-wheel steering!). Yes, this is a rear-wheel drive R8, and it will be offered in limited number – 999 units with both Coupe and Spyder variants. All of them will be built exclusively by hand at the Böllinger Höfe R8 factory. Like the rest of the current R8 line-up, a 5.2 litre V10 petrol engine powers the new variant. It serves up 540 hp and 540 Nm of torque, similar to non-plus versions, and is paired with a seven-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission (no quattro here). This combination is enough to get the R8 V10 RWS from 0-100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds (3.8 seconds for the Spyder). NEW YORK, New York — Alongside the RS 5 Sportback, Audi Sport had another North American debut at the 2018 New York Auto Show: The rear-wheel-drive version of the Audi R8, which we first saw at the Frankfurt show last September.
