There's a big risk of poking a hornets' nest here, but for this week's Trade-Off, we're revisiting our first drive of the facelifted Audi R8 - the one that resulted in an enormous thread on the PH forums which, essentially, saw R8 lovers and detractors locked in a debate more acrimonious and lengthy than Brexit itself. The R8, said many of our readers, is nothing more than a big TT - a fact brutally brought home by the fact that a TT RS isn't actually a whole heap slower and, with two rear seats and a hatchback, actually more usable and practical day-to-day. 'Ah, but,' said the R8ers, 'A TT RS simply can't compare with the thrill and spectacle of that V10 engine, and nor can a TT offer the same supercar feel or chassis adjustability'. We're wading into this fray with our take on the 'But for that money, you can get a...' argument. But we're not going to pick a TT RS - for one thing, it'd just be too easy, and for another, we tend to agree with the sentiment that it doesn't feel quite … [Read more...] about Audi R8 Performance: PH Trade-off!

You know you’re swimming in dangerous waters trying to rationalise a sub-genre in which to fit the Audi R8 RWS and the McLaren 540C when valid arguments can rage (at CarAdvice HQ, at least) about what broader car segment each sits in. Are these super sports cars? Or merely sports cars? Do they qualify as supercars, which has been argued that, these days, sits a tier beneath properly ludicrous hypercars? Further, does some common purpose of being between them transcend mere pigeonholes? And do labels really matter? Labels matter to McLaren, the company literally pegging its entry-level 540C as its lowest-rung super sports car (Sport Series), seated below its proper supercar (Super Series) and hypercar (Ultimate Series) vehicles in a neat three-tier model portfolio. Audi, for its part, can afford to be a little looser with the R8 range it specifically calls “supercar”, because the only way from Ingolstadt’s heap king is down elsewhere in the marque’s fold to … [Read more...] about 2018 Audi R8 V10 RWS v McLaren 540C comparison
If rumors are to be believed, the Audi R8 and it’s stunning naturally aspirated V10 are sadly going the way of the dodo and if you want your supercar to become even more special when this does happen, be sure to tick all the optional Performance Parts when ordering your machine. This Ara Blue V10 Plus is sitting at Audi Forum Neckarsulm and as you can see it has been dressed in an assortment of optional goodies from the Performance Parts catalog launched by Audi Sport last summer. These additional parts are available for the R8 as well as its baby, the TT RS. With a 10-cylinder engine mounted in the middle of its low-slung form, it must be hard to make the Audi R8 look much sportier than it already does. Leave it to the manufacturer itself, then, to take it even further. On display at the Audi Forum in Neckersulm right now is an R8 V10 Plus coupe customized by the Exclusive studio with an array of optional performance parts. We don’t have a precise list of it’s added to this particular example, but we can see a whole array of additional aero components. There’s a front lip spoiler, DTM-style aero flicks, side sill extensions, an even more pronounced diffuser, a big rear wing and more aerodynamic endplates behind the rear wheels. Those alloys look racier than the ones available as standard, too. And the red accents seem to play well with the Ara Blue Crystal paint and black trim. All of which adds up to a road car that looks almost as ready to hit the track as one of Audi Sport’s R8 LMS customer racing cars. In V10 … [Read more...] about Audi R8 V10 Plus Looks Even Racier With Extra Performance Parts
mid-engine prototype was first spotted at the Milford Proving Grounds in early 2015, in a cobbled together Holden Ute no less, speculation has mostly run along two schools of thought: Corvette fans say it’s proof that Zora Arkus-Duntov’s wish of a mid-engine Corvette is finally coming to fruition. Cadillac enthusiasts point to Cadillac’s boss Johan de Nysschen past work at Audi and say the mid-engine prototype is a Cadillac halo car designed to compete with the Audi R8. Recent news that Cadillac is having its new high-performance 4.2 liter twin-turbo V8 built inside the Corvette Assembly Plant’s Performance Build Center has had the effect of pouring gas on these rumors to the point that de Nysschen had to come out at the New York Auto Show to publically call for the speculation to stop as he claims the new engine will be exclusive to Cadillac. When you look at the spy photos of these prototypes, there is nothing design-wise that suggests these are Cadillacs. … [Read more...] about Chevrolet Teases the Mid-Engine C8 Corvette at its Dealer Meetings in Las Vegas
