Begay, one of the last living members of the group, still remembers the struggle. “It was the hardest thing to learn,” the 98-year-old Begay said Sunday at a Phoenix ceremony marking the anniversary. “But we were able to develop a code that couldn’t be broken by the enemy of the United States of America.” Hundreds of Navajos were recruited by the U.S. Marines to serve as Code Talkers during the war. Begay is one of three who is still alive to talk about it. The Code Talkers participated in all assaults the Marines led in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945 … [Read more...] about 80 years later, Navajo Code Talker marks group’s early days

Mexico president to bypass congress to keep army in streets
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 14 MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s president has begun exploring plans to sidestep congress to hand formal control of the National Guard to the army, a move that could extend the military’s control over policing in a country with high levels of violence. That has raised concerns because President Andrés Manuel López Obrador won approval for creating the force in 2019 by pledging in the constitution that it would be under nominal civilian control and that the army would be off the streets by 2024. Neither the National Guard nor the military have been able to lower the insecurity in the country, however. This past week, drug cartels staged widespread arson and shooting attacks, terrifying civilians in three main northwest cities in a bold challenge to the state. On Saturday, authorities sent 300 army special forces and 50 … [Read more...] about Mexico president to bypass congress to keep army in streets

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 15 MEXICO CITY (AP) — Earlier this month Nicaragua shuttered seven radio stations belonging to the Catholic Church and launched an investigation into the bishop of Matagalpa, Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, accusing him of inciting violent actors “to carry out acts of hate against the population.” This is not the first time President Daniel Ortega has moved aggressively to silence critics of his administration. In 2018 the government raided the headquarters of the newspaper Confidencial, led by journalist Carlos Fernando Chamorro, who is considered one of the most prominent critics of Ortega. Then, throughout 2021, authorities arrested seven potential presidential candidates for that year’s November elections. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 TAMPA, Fla. - State Attorney Andrew Warren was waiting for a grand jury to issue indictments in two rape and murder cases he had been working on for three years when he glanced down at his phone and saw an email from an attorney for Gov. Ron DeSantis. It said he was suspended from his job. Stunned, Warren quickly went to his office to consult with his staff. Not long after, there was a knock at the door. An armed major from the county sheriff's office and a man in a suit from the governor's office carrying a copy of DeSantis' executive order suspending him were looking for him. "He said, essentially, 'The governor has suspended you and you need to leave the office now,'" Warren, a Democrat, recalled of DeSantis' aide. "So within maybe seven minutes from getting the email, I was outside, on the street. The major offered me a ride home because they … [Read more...] about A progressive prosecutor clashed with DeSantis – now he’s out of a job

Toto Wolff: Sergio Perez replacing Lewis Hamilton rumours were ‘complete bullsh*t’
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has strongly denied he has spoken to other drivers, including Sergio Perez, to replace Lewis Hamilton. Following the very controversial way in which Hamilton saw an eighth World Championship title slip away from him in Abu Dhabi at the end of the 2021 season, there were strong suggestions that the Mercedes driver may not return for 2022. Those rumours were put to bed when a defiant Hamilton was part of the Mercedes W13 launch in February. However, with Mercedes well out of the title picture in 2022 due to an uncompetitive car, the retirement talk quickly returned. But, while shortlists were being put together by the media and fans alike as to who might replace Hamilton should he decide to leave at the end of this season or the next, Wolff said no such plans are being made by him and Mercedes. One of the names put through the rumour mill was Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, yet Wolff has made it clear those reports, and any other reports for that … [Read more...] about Toto Wolff: Sergio Perez replacing Lewis Hamilton rumours were ‘complete bullsh*t’
Nicholas Latifi: Sebastian Vettel campaigns for everyone, not just Formula 1 drivers
Nicholas Latifi has praised Sebastian Vettel for having the welfare of all racing drivers at heart, not only his contemporaries in Formula 1. Barring a big change of mind, Vettel will leave F1 at the end of this season as a four-time World Champion with his career having begun in 2007. During the intervening 15 years, the German has matured into a hugely respected figure knowledgeable about a broad range of subjects both within and outside of the sport. Among the motorsport-related topics closest to Vettel’s heart is, understandably, safety and that ties in perfectly with his role as a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association – a position to which he was first appointed in 2010, the year of his first world title triumph. At this season’s Austrian Grand Prix, Vettel received a suspended fine of 25,000 euros from the FIA after he reportedly flounced out of a drivers’ briefing without permission to leave, frustrated by an argument among his rivals and stewards. Latifi … [Read more...] about Nicholas Latifi: Sebastian Vettel campaigns for everyone, not just Formula 1 drivers
