Michael Balsamo Associated Press Published 2:00 p.m. UTC Jul 15, 2018 Los Angeles – A second-generation California firefighter who was using a bulldozer to prevent a wildfire from spreading was killed Saturday near Yosemite National Park, state fire officials said. Heavy Fire Equipment Operator Braden Varney, 36, died in the morning hours, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said. The blaze broke out Friday night in Mariposa County, near the west end of Yosemite National Park and Sierra National Forest. Fire officials said it had burned about 150 acres (61 hectares). Varney worked through the night and was driving the bulldozer to cut a firebreak to keep the fire from extending into a nearby community, according to fire chief Nancy Koerperich. Investigators were working to determine further circumstances surrounding Varney’s death, but they believe he was working his way out of the fire area when he was killed, Koerperich said. “This … [Read more...] about Firefighter killed in wildfire near Yosemite National Park
The 2015 Ducati Scrambler raised all kinds of excitment when it came out by pretty much nailing a sweet spot between retro-styling, light adventure capability and the mystique associated with “Italianess” that people seem to find enticing. The slightly meatier ’18 Desert Sled should be all that and a little more rough-road ready. So what else do you want to know? The Desert Sled shares a basic platform with the standard Scrambler but the suspension, wheels, design and geometry are all unique. I’ve just collected one of these from an office in Beverly Hills and lanesplit my way back home to Culver City. So far I can only tell you that the bike feels easily physically manageable, has a great exhaust note, healthy-feeling torque, decidedly soft suspension and a lot more looseness to it than I was expecting. That’s not to say the bike is unresponsive, I guess what I mean is, it actually feels more like an off-roader than an upright touring bike. Alright, maybe … [Read more...] about What Do You Want To Know About The 2018 Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled?
The 2018 Ford Mustang GT let out a glorious, guttural belch as I rolled into the gas through a long sweeping turn. There was nothing else on the road but tire marks and tumbleweeds until I caught a twinkle in the rear-view mirror: another Ford Mustang GT, this car’s direct predecessor. If that had been a scene in a bad movie, I probably would have grumbled something like “this should be interesting” without taking the toothpick out of my mouth before blasting into a gear-shifting montage that culminated in an explosion. But since we’re civilized, we just pulled the 2018 Ford Mustang GT over next to my friend’s 2016 Ford Mustang GT to find out exactly how different the two cars look and feel from one another. (Full disclosure: Ford loaned me a 2018 Kona Blue Mustang GT to test, and my friend Will just happened to own a 2016 Mustang GT in pretty similar trim. We took these cars to Angeles Crest Highway to get an earnest impression of what they’re both … [Read more...] about How The 2018 Ford Mustang GT Really Compares To The Last One

In a 17-page letter in 1990, Menendez told his teen brother, Erik, that he wanted to stay together. “My greatest fear is that we would not end up in the same … [Read more...] about Their brutal crime horrified the nation nearly 30 years ago.
