We’ve had our first session here in Singapore and there was plenty of spectacular action and a few near misses out on the track as the drivers get used to it. At the end, Hamilton very nearly hit Fisichella who had spun in one of the blind corners and was across the track. Lewis was fastest, by a few hundredths from Massa and Raikkonen. Kovalainen had a huge moment at the final corner, as did Vettel. Luckily for bthe there is plenty of run off area there. Mark Webber hit the wall on the outside of the corner which passes under the grandstands early on, so Red Bull lost a lot of set up time, which is not ideal on a new track. It’s very dusty out there, as you’d expect, but also very bumpy and the cars look very lively out there. They move around a lot, buck and jump over the bumps and generally look as though they are on the edge. Perhaps the artificial lights exacerbate that too. Lewis describes it as a 'very busy lap' and there are plenty of traps lying in wait for drivers … [Read more...] about The cars look spectcular

Alex Albon’s quip over Sergio Perez collision, questions if penalty was ‘fair’
Alex Albon has joked journalists should ask Yuki Tsunoda for his thoughts on Sergio Perez after the Red Bull driver wrecked both their races in Singapore. On a nightmare weekend for Red Bull, Perez compounded the situation when he crashed into Tsunoda at the start, leaving the AlphaTauri driver with a puncture and forced to retire the car. He was back in the wars in the closing laps of the race as he chased down Albon as they two raced for points. Sergio Perez cost Alex Albon points in Singapore But trying several lunges on the Williams driver, Albon was not impressed with that and called him “f***ing dirty” , the last one failed with Perez crashing into his rival at the tight left-hander after the Anderson Bridge. Albon briefly came to a stop on the track, lucky to avoid the barrier, but it was enough to punt him out of the points with the driver crossing the line down in 12th place. Perez was later hit with a five-second penalty and penalty points on his super licence. … [Read more...] about Alex Albon’s quip over Sergio Perez collision, questions if penalty was ‘fair’

Tech expert warns Mercedes will be ‘at best fourth fastest’ in F1 2024 season
F1 technical expert Gary Anderson fears Mercedes will begin the F1 2024 season as the fourth-fastest team “at best” after making no discernible progress since the start of 2022. Having won a record eight Constructors’ titles from the beginning of F1’s V6 hybrid era in 2014, Mercedes have been restricted to just one race win since the ground effect regulations came into effect last year. Mercedes entered 2023 aiming to return to title contention, but were forced to redesign their W14 car after an alarming display at the season opener in Bahrain and have made only limited progress since a heavily revised chassis arrived in Monaco at the end of May. Mercedes tipped to stay behind McLaren and Ferrari in F1 2024 Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were more than a second off Max Verstappen’s time for pole position at last weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, with the former 49 seconds adrift of the winning Red Bull at the chequered flag. Hamilton appeared demoralised at the end of the … [Read more...] about Tech expert warns Mercedes will be ‘at best fourth fastest’ in F1 2024 season
Thoughts on Singapore’s F1 street track (2008 Singapore Grand Prix preview)
Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo is not looking forward to F1 racing at the new Singapore street circuit at night: The drivers are concentrating on what needs to be improved and on the next grand prix in Singapore. But I have the impression that it’s another track where you can’t overtake, Valencia-style. To go on with these circuits spells an ugly future for Formula One. What will the track actually be like? Here’s some track maps, images and video that give an impression of the new Singapore street track. Formula 1 takes a leap into the unknown in more ways than one at Singapore. As well as it being F1’s first visit to Singapore it will also be the first of what could soon become many night races on the calendar. The second new venue on the F1 calendar this year is, like Valencia, also a street circuit. But the tight, slow configuration and diverse scenery promises the track will very different in nature and appearance to the Spanish circuit. Spielberg RST: Palttala and Schiller score confident Endurance race win
Palttala closely followed pole-sitter Pieter Schothorst in the early stages of the race and the Marc VDS car ended up in the lead after the pitstops, going on to claim victory. In the opening stint, Palttala and Schothorst comfortably led the field and their advantage was stretched even further when third-placed Bruno Bonifacio was forced to pull over due to car problems. That promoted Roy Geerts into third but Schothorst's sister car was 18 seconds adrift by the time the pit window opened. Palttala was first to pit between the leaders, giving his seat to Amateur class teammate Fabian Schiller, but Schothorst followed him a lap later. His father Jeroen Schothorst took over but had lost the lead to Schiller and was soon back in the pits. The Mark VDS car of Schiller, as such, inherited a lead more than 10 seconds and the German quickly increased it to an even bigger margin. Schiller, who is yet to be defeated in the Amateur class, cruised through the final half hour to … [Read more...] about Spielberg RST: Palttala and Schiller score confident Endurance race win
iRacing looks towards 24 Hours of Daytona
Anticipation is building for iRacing.com’s virtual 24 Hours of Daytona -- the online motorsport service’s first official ‘round the clock race slated for January 31 – following last weekend’s successful Roar Before the 24 test. More than 200 teams of sim racers took part in the event, a final run-through of iRacing.com’s unique new driver swap/team feature that enables two or more sim racers anywhere in the world to co-drive a car and perform a variety of other team functions such as crew chief and spotter. With 212 participating teams, the event was split into five different races featuring 42 or 43 cars apiece with two classes (prototype and GT3) in each “split.” The top-rated split saw the MIG Motorsport Endurance team take the overall win in their HPD-ARX01c prototype while the WTC Chassis team claimed GT3 honors in their RUF. The overall winners covered 859 laps during the course of the 24 hours, easily outdistancing the DINO Racing Fast and BSR Racing Team prototypes.
