Differing tire strategies for Scuderia Ferrari and Mercedes AMG Petronas produced a thrilling finish to Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix. Pole sitter, and leader for most of the race, Sebastian Vettel started the race on super soft Pirelli tires before switching to the softs on Lap 18. Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas started on the super softs as well, but the team put Bottas on medium compound Pirellis on lap 21. Mercedes started Hamilton on soft tires, and he worked his way from ninth on the grid up to fourth in the first stint, which featured a thrilling three-wide pass into Turn 1, in which he passed Nico Hulkenberg, Sergio Perez, and Fernando Alonso in one move. Hamilton pitted on Lap 26, the team also putting him on mediums. The differing tire strategies set up a showdown in the second half of the race, with Ferrari looking at a two-stop strategy, while Mercedes went with one stop. However, Ferrari changed their strategy following a disastrous pit stop for Kimi Raikkonen on Lap … [Read more...] about Formula 1: Vettel holds off Bottas charge to win in Bahrain
Bahrain International Circuit, home of the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand PrixEnlarge PhotoRound two of the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship takes us to Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir for the Bahrain Grand Prix. The race is very different to the previous round in Melbourne, Australia. For example, at this time of year the temperatures in Bahrain reach close to 90 degrees F (32 degrees C) during the hottest part of the day. And the race, scheduled for Sunday, starts at twilight and finishes under lights in order to avoid most of the heat of the day. However, this throws up a new issue since all of the practice sessions take place during the day and the qualifying and race are held at night. This makes it extremely difficult to find the right setup. The Bahrain International Circuit stretches 3.3 miles, with its layout defined by four relatively long straights that should prove a good test of the power units. The brakes also get a good work out due to the slow corners. Because of this … [Read more...] about 2018 Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix preview
This year’s Formula 1 eSports series will include an official entry from nine of the ten world championship teams, with Scuderia Ferrari being the only outfit that decided not to participate. F1 launched its first eSports series last year and will continue to use the Codemasters-developed F1 2017 video game for this year’s contest. The format of the F1 eSports Series has been significantly changed this year and will be split into two parts. Competitors will contest four qualifying events in a bid to win a place in a selection process called the Pro Draft, during which Mercedes, Red Bull, Force India, Williams, Renault, Haas, Toro Rosso, McLaren and Sauber will select at least one driver for their own teams. The qualifiers, which begin on April 13, will not be simple time trials or races. For the first event, players must start the final five laps of the Chinese Grand Prix as Valtteri Bottas in sixth place and attempt to score a podium on a wet but drying track. The … [Read more...] about All Formula 1 teams except Ferrari commit to second eSports season

Current Formula One world champion Nico Rosberg has denied that he intends to make a comeback in the near future, putting an end to speculations regarding a possible move to Scuderia Ferrari for the 2018 Formula 1 season. Toto Wolff, executive director of Mercedes AMG Petronas, who oversaw the three-year intense rivalry between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, last week suggested that he could imagine the German driver back in F1 for the next season, perhaps in the seat of a Ferrari car: “I think when he took the decision to retire it was because it was just too much. It was a very stressful year against probably the best driver in F1 and he felt, at that stage, exhausted. But he is 31 years old. If he is unlucky, he has another 70 years to go in his life! I will give you one [quote]: I wouldn’t be surprised if he changes his mind in a year and reappears in a Ferrari” – Toto Wolff said, thus immediately generating numerous discussions regarding the Maranello … [Read more...] about Nico Rosberg on a possible Formula 1 return to Ferrari
There is a rumor being circulated by German Magazine Auto Bild that might be of particular interest to racing fans everywhere. That rumor: Porsche is coming back to Formula 1. That’s right- after another convincing win at the 24 Hours of LeMans earlier this month, Porsche seems to be setting its sights on other racing series. The all-electric Formula E series is particularly interesting, sure- but the budget there (even on the high side) is barely a tenth of what a full-fledged assault on Formula 1 would cost. Even so, Porsche execs will be sitting in at the next engine manufacturers’ meeting in Baku, where they’ll discuss future options with Renault, Mercedes, Ferrari, and Honda. Speaking of Honda, Porsche has to be looking their way. Especially since, after Honda’s very public failure since returning to the sport with McLaren back in 2015, would Porsche’s corporate masters at VW might be willing to take a similar risk of public failure Would they … [Read more...] about Is Porsche Really Planning a Formula 1 Comeback?

It’s finally official – 2017 will be the final year of the Formula 1 Malaysian Grand Prix, and no further F1 races will be held from 2018 onwards. This was confirmed by prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as well as a statement posted on the race series’ official website. The premier announced that the Cabinet has agreed to end the F1-hosting contract citing poor returns for the country relative to the cost of organising the event. “In the early stages of its organisation here, the F1 races helped to promote the country as a world-class sporting destination, as well as promoting Malaysia as a global tourist destination,” Najib said. “However, it is time that the government review the organisation of the F1 races by taking into account the changes which have taken place since we began organising it in 1999. This decision was made after taking into account reports and views from Sepang International Circuit (SIC) on the financial impact to all … [Read more...] about Malaysia to stop hosting Formula 1 from 2018
