FOLLOWING THE SUCCESS of Mercedes-AMG’s GT3 race car—winner of multiple GT titles and major events like the 24 Hours of Nürburgring—it was only a matter of time before the wizards in Afalterbach created a GT4 car to put more people behind the wheel of their factory-built racers. This story originally appeared in the May, 2018 issue of R&T - Ed. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below Whereas cars built for the FIA’s GT3 class are made largely for pro teams, the Mercedes-AMG GT4 targets everyone from well-heeled track-day enthusiasts to gentlemen drivers and young racers who want to compete in the growing number of series that feature GT4 cars. The car is engineered, above all, to be safe, easy to drive, and affordable to maintain. It rides on the same basic chassis as the production GT R and has the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, detuned from 577 to 503 hp. In international GT4-class races, Balance of Performance rules may further constrain the engine to … [Read more...] about The Mercedes-AMG GT4 Is a Fast, Approachable Race Car
The game marks 30 years of DTM racing. Mercedes has announced that after 30 years it will leave Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters at the end of 2018, and it's saying auf wiedersehen with a retro video game and contest. Mercedes has been an anchor constructor for DTM for three decades, and in the process created legendary race cars such as the 190E 2.5 16 Evo II and the CLK DTM, along with their corresponding street-legal homologation specials. To mark 30 years of racing, the company has released an online video game called, simply, Retro Game. Its graphics recall the 8-bit games of the original Nintendo era such as Rad Racer. The object of the game is to drive what appears to be a Mercedes CLK DTM race car, trying to achieve the highest score within the allotted time. Collecting Mercedes-Benz logos will earn points and give your car a speed boost. Hit the other cars, which appear to be Audis, and they will slow you down as you lose points. Every day you play the game, your email … [Read more...] about Mercedes releases retro DTM racing game
It's always fascinating to see how a manufacturer turns a triumphant season in motorsport to its advantage. The old adage of 'win of Sunday, sell on Monday' isn't always an easy to pull off when you've been supplying championship-winning Formula 1 engines, but are best known for hatchbacks and people carriers (see Espace F1 for Renault's enterprising solution). Even when the synergies do suggest themselves, the dots aren't necessarily joined up with much conviction. Citroen and Volkswagen, for example, spent the last ten years politely sharing domination of the WRC with nothing more to show for it in the showroom than a lacklustre Polo GTI and a so-so DS3. Of course, when carmakers do get it right, the results tend to be memorable. Typically (though not always) this occurs when they resolve to throw even more money, power and components at a road car already jam-packed with all three. Mercedes-AMG has made this kind of endeavour a speciality, and did not miss the opportunity in … [Read more...] about CLK DTM AMG: Showpiece of the Week
The Mercedes CLK DTM AMG is one of the greatest cars ever made by AMG. Built to celebrate the CLK DTM’s championship win in 2003 with Bernd Schneider, AMG produced 100 examples of the coupe version and later on, in 2007, 80 units of the cabrio version. A coupe version is for sale at a luxury british dealer for 275,000 pounds (aprox. 315,000 euro). The street version of the Mercedes CLK DTM AMG features a de-tuned version of the SLS AMG’s 5.4-litre engine, racing-inspired suspension and a luxurious interior. The famous AMG 5.4 litre V8 was adapted for the street and it has new pistons, valve gear, crankcase, cooling system, exhaust, supercharger, while the huge power of 582 HP is delivered to the rear wheels through a five speed automatic gearbox 5G-Tronic Speedshift. The car reaches 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 320 km/h. Step inside and you are greeted with stunning one piece carbon fibre bucket seats, oval … [Read more...] about Mercedes CLK DTM AMG for sale at 275,000 pounds
Mercedes-AMG DTM has completed its squad for their finale season in the DTM Series with the signing of race winner Christian Vietoris. Vietoris, is one of three drivers returning to the squad along with 2015 DTM champion Pascal Wehrlein and Dani Juncadella. “After a year’s absence, I’m obviously delighted to be back in motorsport, and as a member of the Mercedes family. “My batteries are fully charged, and I’m ready to step in as substitute driver in the DTM. After six years in the DTM with Mercedes, I have a lot of experience and I’m ready whenever the team needs me.” Vietoris spent six years in the DTM with Mercedes from 2011 to 2016, during that time he secured; one win, three pole positions, nine podiums and two fastest laps. His most successful … [Read more...] about Christian Vietoris Named Mercedes’ DTM Test and Reserve Driver
Tweet TweetWhile there is a new Mercedes CLK out and about, a new Mercedes CLK Black Series isn’t exactly available. This is why RENNtech has decided to give the older one a serious treat in preparation for its send off. Among other offerings from the Americans, the AMG Black gets a new aerodynamic kit to help it stick to the ground as best possible. There’s just one thing, like the CLK 63 AMG Black, the RENNtech aero kit doesn’t tell the entire story in its spec sheet list. With RENNtech’s additions we find that all components have been properly researched into offering seamless applicability and fittings to the original body work. Apart from looking good and not falling off the kit is said to offer improvements in vehicle performance and handling. That’s all lovely, but we should speak about what comes included in the price. Speaking of which, the entire RENNtech setup will cost you a fiver under $6500. For that sort of money you get three things that … [Read more...] about RENNtech update the Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG Black
If you don’t know what the CLK DTM AMG actually is, you might easily dismiss it as just a limited edition of Merc’s compact coupe with pumped-up arches and big rims. Well, for starters it’s more powerful than a Black Series, with 582hp and 800Nm (590lb-ft) of torque from a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 and a 0-60mph (0-96km/h) sprint in 3.6 seconds, and it’s faster than some modern AMGs. Moreover, it was aimed to be a homologation special for Merc’s German Touring Car Championship contender. As such, the company built just 100 units for the Coupe (and 60 convertibles the next year), of which only 40 were right-hand drive models imported to the UK, so it’s rarer than a McLaren F1. Thus, it has all of the ingredients that make it a collector’s item, and such cars don’t pop up for sale that often. Whenever they do, though, they change hands for six-digit sums, and this particular RHD example is estimated to fetch £180,000-£220,000 … [Read more...] about How Much Would You Pay For A Barely-Driven Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM?
Tweet TweetI know it sounds like one of the dullest collections of letters ever known to mankind but actually they make up some of the finest names and acronyms in this automotive business we love so much. The Mercedes side of the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show made room for a special stand that was dedicated to this Mercedes C Class Coupe that AMG turned up to the max on every aspect so that it can race in the DTM. Every year DTM race cars get at least a minor update but Mercedes pushed the boundaries with this particular one in preparation for the next year of the German touring car series as its expected to be one of the hottest ever. The hype is interesting and the Mercedes stand in Frankfurt was even more than that since the people who introduced the new C Class DTM racer were none other than Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg. Sadly, the feature presentation didn’t include any details on what’s going on underneath the massive downforce producing bodykit on the new … [Read more...] about Mercedes C Class Coupe AMG is ready to take on DTM

If these are AMG's 14 most interesting and unusual cars, its nine-seater luxury MPV has to be the 15th. Park one next to an AMG 280 GE 5.6 Sport from a decade earlier, and you have the perfect duo of all-purpose unicorns at hand—not to mention an amazing photo opportunity. While many people believe the 2001-2004 Mercedes-Benz C 30 CDI AMG was the first and so far only diesel model built in Affalterbach, the 1989 AMG MB 100 D begs to differ. Just two years after the infamous Hammer hit the scene, AMG turned its attention towards Benz's Spanish-made workhorse. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below AMG offered an upgraded diesel both in 2.4- or 3.0-liter form, tuned to give the light van 98 or 127 horsepower, mostly thanks to a new sequential turbocharger. The extra kraft came in handy, considering the weight penalty of rich leathers and television sets. Inside, the AMG MB 100 D featured nine more-supportive seats wrapped in the same Alcantara as the van's practical folding table. … [Read more...] about This Diesel Van Is the Strangest Vehicle in AMG’s History
