Amazing race how many seasons
An Extraordinary Race ends with a Big, Big Call
An extraordinary Grand Prix with one of the most exciting finishes ever has been given a different complexion by the stewards’ decision to penalise Lewis Hamilton for taking an advantage from cutting a chicane. There is not doubt that this is a very big call by the stewards and a lot of unbiased observers among the media and the public will find it hard to understand. It takes a lot to unpick the results of a Grand Prix, especially one which would otherwise probably be long remembered as a classic and a great advert for the sport. I’ve watched the incident many times now and Hamilton cuts the chicane because he was pushed out wide, quite fairly by Kimi, his trajectory makes it hard for him to follow Raikkonen around the corner and, faced with going on the grass, he chose instead to cut the chicane. It’s a deliberate act on his part, amazing speed of thought, but he clearly chooses the least worst option. He is therefore in front coming out of the chicane, but crucially he is on … [Read more...] about An Extraordinary Race ends with a Big, Big Call
Massa’s task at Interlagos
Felipe Massa’s task in Brazil is clear; do what he has done the last two seasons and dominate the race. He looks like he has his head down a bit now, after being outpaced not only by Hamilton but also by Raikkonen in China. However he’s amazing at Interlagos and will no doubt be inspired by his home crowd, but there will be a bitterness about the experience too and this could really undermine his weekend. It's a psychological issue and I'll be watching very closely to see how he deals with it. Massa knows that there is a very real possibility that this will be his only chance to win the world championship. You never know when a chance is going to come and you have to take it when it does. Robert Kubica has been making a similar point to BMW recently, annoyed that they didn't pursue this year's title. Massa was presented with this chance because his team mate Raikkonen had major problems getting to grips with the 2008 Ferrari and fell behind in the points. But this is … [Read more...] about Massa’s task at Interlagos
Red Bull’s F1 rivals expect it to bounce back immediately in Japan
A raised ride height for the bumpy Marina Bay street circuit put the RB19 out of its comfort zone last weekend. Max Verstappen recovered from 11th to fifth as Sergio Perez scrapped to eighth. That left the door open for Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz to lead Lando Norris to score an expertly controlled victory. In doing so, he ended Red Bull’s 100% win record so far this season. But the grid believes this was only a blip for Red Bull and that a return to a conventional circuit at Suzuka this weekend will enable the RB19 to rediscover its set-up sweet spot. Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff, who reckoned the change in winner was a “breath of fresh air” for F1, said: “They have been so strong and that’s why they’ve won so many races this year. We must not forget that just because we have this outlier here in Singapore. “I have no doubt they will be strong for the more conventional race tracks. But it is a breath of fresh air that we have a different winner and a … [Read more...] about Red Bull’s F1 rivals expect it to bounce back immediately in Japan
Verstappen reveals role he played in helping De Vries get AlphaTauri drive
Max Verstappen revealed how he helped fellow Dutch racer Nyck de Vries land a drive at Red Bull’s junior team next season. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free AlphaTauri confirmed today that De Vries will be part of their 2023 driver line-up. He impressed the team with his one-off performance for Williams as a substitute in the Italian Grand Prix. “I knew this already coming here,” said Verstappen after today’s qualifying session. “But of course this is incredible for him. He’s been pushing hard for it for a long time and to finally get that opportunity is amazing for him.” Verstappen revealed he encouraged De Vries to contact Red Bull’s motorsport consultant Helmut Marko about a drive following his impressive showing at Monza. Marko would be in a good mood following Verstappen’s victory in the race, he told De Vries. “I think after Monza there was no real discussion anymore,” said Verstappen. “Helmut is the guy who when he likes something he is daring … [Read more...] about Verstappen reveals role he played in helping De Vries get AlphaTauri drive
F1 Form Guide: Japanese Grand Prix
Formula One finally had a different look last weekend when Red Bull was finally defeated and Carlos Sainz won for Ferrari in a nose-to-tail three-team finish – but does that mean the reigning champions’ dominance is over? Probably not. Verstappen is still far and away the favourite for victory in Japan – his odds of winning are 29/100, barely any different to what they were last weekend, and the Singapore defeat was likely more a blip than a cliff-edge drop in form. After that race, Verstappen revealed the car had been tough to set up on the simulator even before the team arrived at the track, and he also revealed that the same car, on a ‘virtual’ Suzuka, had “felt amazing.” The team’s struggles were caused by a new floor that did not work as well as expected and track resurfacing and circuit changes that did not suit the car. Suzuka could see a return to norm – but good odds can still be found. POLE PERFORMANCE Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing RB19 Photo by: … [Read more...] about F1 Form Guide: Japanese Grand Prix
Incredible Hulk on pole by a second for Brazilian Grand Prix
Today was one of those days that live long in the memory. On a rapidly drying track 23 year Nico Hulkenberg gave Williams its first pole position for 100 races ahead of the main championship protagonists. And he did so by a huge margin - over a second. Sebastian Vettel was second with Mark Webber third. Lewis Hamilton starts fourth on the grid tomorrow, one place ahead of championship leader Fernando Alonso. It was a swashbuckling performance by Hulkenberg, who has been getting progressively stronger in the second half of the season. For a driver to take a pole position in his first season is pretty special. He and Williams team mate Rubens Barrichello looked good on intermediate tyres on a wet track, but when it came time to put on slicks for the final laps in Q3 he went into a different league, taking pole by over a second from the two Red Bull cars. The Williams has often showed itself to be quick on a green track this year. In Suzuka on a green track after the heavy … [Read more...] about Incredible Hulk on pole by a second for Brazilian Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton details scenario which would confirm ‘something’s up’ with Red Bull
Lewis Hamilton expects Red Bull will re-establish their 30-second margin over the pack in Japan, and if they do not, then something really is going on. Despite struggling throughout Friday practice last time out in Singapore, few believed that Red Bull, who had claimed all 14 grand prix wins up to that point in F1 2023, were genuinely in trouble. That was confirmed though with a double elimination in Q2, with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz going on to become the first non-Red Bull race winner of the season. Lewis Hamilton expects Red Bull 30 seconds clear at Suzuka Red Bull then are the major talking point as Formula 1 heads for Suzuka, home of the Japanese Grand Prix, where we will find out whether Singapore was a shock blip for Red Bull, or whether something truly has changed to knock Red Bull off their perch. The team consistently denied suggestions that the pair of FIA technical directives introduced for Singapore, designed to combat flexible bodywork and floors, had any … [Read more...] about Lewis Hamilton details scenario which would confirm ‘something’s up’ with Red Bull
Hulkenberg takes second Driver of the Weekend win
For the second time in three races Nico Hulkenberg topped the Driver of the Weekend poll, this time following his stern defence from Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso during the Korean Grand Prix. Hulkenberg also won with the highest percentage of votes of anyone this season. Sebastian Vettel made his eighth appearance in the top three this year, but perhaps even more impressive is the fact that he’s now been in the top two for the last four races. Another driver to feature in the top three for their eighth time this year was Kimi Raikkonen who came in third. 1. Nico Hulkenberg Started: 8th Hulkenberg put his ever-improving Sauber an impressive eighth – which would become seventh on the grid on Saturday due to Mark Webber’s ten place grid penalty – just two tenths shy of Alonso’s Ferrari. He made up for that at the start however, passing both Ferraris as they nearly took each other out, to end up in fifth place by the end of lap one. The quick-thinking Hulkenberg … [Read more...] about Hulkenberg takes second Driver of the Weekend win
