DETROIT (AP) — A car that once was America’s top-seller is about to die — for a second time. Ford Taurus, may you rest in peace at the salvage yard. Blame the full-size sedan’s slow demise on the national obsession with SUVs and Ford Motor Co.’s need to slash costs and remake itself for a new era of self-driving cars and shuttles. Ford announced the car’s passing this week as part of major restructuring plan aimed at focusing capital spending on more popular SUVs and technology needed to morph Ford into a mobility company. The 114-year-old automaker said it would stop selling all car models in North America but two: the Mustang muscle car and a version of the compact Focus called Active. That means Ford’s Chicago plant will stop making Tauruses next March. North American production of the Focus compact car and Fiesta subcompact will halt in May, while the midsize Fusion lives a few more years before it departs. They’ll be replaced by five … [Read more...] about Once America’s best-selling car, the Ford Taurus dies, again
America’s love affair with crossovers is causing an April massacre as Ford has finally confirmed plans to kill all sedans in North America. The announcement was made with little fanfare as it was tucked away in the company’s first quarter financial results. Buried underneath various statistics is a rather blunt statement that the company will “not invest in next generations of traditional Ford sedans for North America.” Instead, models such as the Fusion, Fiesta and Taurus will be phased out over the next few years. The company isn’t abandoning cars altogether as the company will keep the Mustang. Ford also confirmed plans to launch the all-new Focus Active in North America next year. Additional crossover-like vehicles are possible as the company noted it is exploring “white space” vehicles that “combine the best attributes of cars and utilities, such as higher ride height, space and versatility.” In a statement, Ford CEO Jim … [Read more...] about Blue Oval Bloodbath: Ford Killing All Sedans In North America
Confirming what has long been suspected, Ford today announced in its quarterly financial report that it will not invest in a next generation of sedans for North America. "Over the next few years, the Ford car portfolio in North America will transition to two vehicles — the best-selling Mustang and the all-new Focus Active crossover coming out next year," the statement reads. "The company is also exploring new 'white space' vehicle silhouettes that combine the best attributes of cars and utilities, such as higher ride height, space and versatility." By 2020, Ford says 90 percent of its portfolio in North America will be trucks, SUVs and commercial vehicles. This move is due to consumer demand and product profitability. The company also announced that it is committed to developing "new propulsion choices," indicating it would add hybrid powertrains to the F-150, Mustang, Explorer, Escape and upcoming Bronco. It also announced it will produce an EV starting in 2020 that will be a … [Read more...] about Ford confirms the only cars it will sell are Mustang, Focus Active
The Ford Fusion, Focus, C-Max, Taurus, and Fiesta—all on the way out in North America as Ford transitions its lineup to one that is all but entirely dominated by SUVs, crossovers and trucks, the automaker announced today. In the coming years, only the Mustang and new Focus Active mini-crossover will be in Ford’s North America lineup, Ford said today in a Q1 financial report. “Over the next few years, the Ford car portfolio in North America will transition to two vehicles – the best-selling Mustang and the all-new Focus Active crossover coming out next year. The company is also exploring new ‘white space’ vehicle silhouettes that combine the best attributes of cars and utilities, such as higher ride height, space and versatility.” Additionally, the company said “Given declining consumer demand and product profitability, the company will not invest in next generations of traditional Ford sedans for North America.” One thing Ford did … [Read more...] about Ford Will Phase Out All Its Small Cars And Sedans In North America Except The Mustang And Focus Active
Leasing accounts for a third of all new vehicle sales, according to car buying website Edmunds. Another alternative way to own a car, via subscription, is just starting to pick up speed, mainly for luxury brands and certified pre-owned vehicles. With these paths to ownership, people generally will not care how long the vehicle is expected to last. However, 2/3 of new vehicle buyers likely do care about getting a vehicle that will last a long time. And used car buyers are definitely concerned about such things. A new study out by automotive data and research company iSeeCars suggests that several different car, truck, and SUV models have a good chance of making it to the 200,000-mile mark. And the ones topping the list are made in America. To determine which vehicle last the longest, iSeeCars analyzed data pertaining to 13.5 million used vehicles built between 1980 and 2017. On a model name basis, the company then extracted the percentage of each vehicle nameplate that reached the … [Read more...] about Buy and hold! Ryan writes: Hi Sajeev, I have a problem with the air conditioning not functioning properly on my ’89 Ford Taurus LX equipped with Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC). When I start the car on a warm day the AC can blow icy cold air immediately, but the temperature gradually rises to ambient temperature by the time I reach the freeway, and is bad enough that I turn the EATC off. When I turn on the EATC by pressing AUTO, it often feels like it’s blowing maximum heat. I have noticed that when this happens the AC compressor clutch is not cycling on and off. During the winter, the AC compressor clutch clicks on and off. The problem seems to be intermittent and only occurs during warmer months. Also, during startup, you can hear an audible “whirring” noise in the dash, and that started to sound abnormal about the same time the AC stopped working. By “abnormal” I mean it lasts much longer than it used to. I believe the noise I’m hearing is … [Read more...] about Piston Slap: Bullish on Ford’s Electronic Automatic Temperature Control?
Earlier today, Ford Performance posted a video on its Facebook page showing noted former-Stig Ben Collins walking with a Ford employee past a line of vehicles. At the end of the line, the employee introduces Collins to a vehicle the camera doesn’t actually show. Instead, it cuts to the screenshot you see above, an ST badge on a blue car. “Stay tuned,” it reads. The caption below the video, meanwhile, says, “The newest addition to the Ford Performance lineup is sure to catch everyone’s attention.”The question is, though, what car are they talking about? The caption makes it pretty clear this is a teaser for some sort of fun-to-drive vehicle, and the image above suggests it will be some kind of ST. Sadly, it’s not likely a U.S.-spec Fiesta ST. The part of the caption that calls it the “newest addition” makes it sound like the new ST-badged vehicle won’t be a redesigned version of a car that previously carried … [Read more...] about A Mysterious New Ford ST-Tuned Vehicle is Coming to Detroit
