Tell me — do you enjoy luxury, power, and a high level of standard equipment, all wrapped in a family-friendly sedan package? If so, it sounds like today’s Rare Ride might be for you. It’s a well-preserved Ford Taurus SHO from 1990. Ford modernized the American sedan market with the introduction of its slick, aero-friendly 1986 Taurus sedan and wagon, along with its upmarket Mercury Sable sister. With the new product flying off dealer lots, the good people at Ford readied a new experiment. The foundations of said experiment were set years before, when in 1984 Ford signed an agreement with Yamaha. The agreement specified that Yamaha design and build a V6 engine based on the existing Ford Vulcan powerplant for use in a performance Ford model. While the engine would come from an external source, Ford turned in-house for the rest of the project. It tasked those who designed the Mustang SVT Cobra with creating a performance version of the Taurus. The resulting car would be … [Read more...] about Rare Rides: The 1990 Ford Taurus SHO, in Stunning Silver

We're less than a week away from seeing the new 2020 Ford Explorer in the flesh, but Ford is giving the world a sneak peek at the new SUV by showing us the one most likely to appear in your rearview mirror. Ford's new 2020 Police Interceptor Utility (don't call it an Explorer) broke cover at an event near the company's Dearborn, Mich., headquarters earlier today, giving us a look at the next-generation law enforcement vehicle. With the Taurus slated to end production in February, this will become the mainstay of Ford's police offerings, joining the Fusion-based Police Responder Hybrid and Special Service Vehicle Plug-in Hybrid sedans, the F-150 Police Responder, Expedition SSV, F-150 SSV and Transit Police Transport Vehicle fleet. Related: Mustang GT500, Sub-Bronco Off-Roader Part of Ford's 2020 Vision The new Police Interceptor Utility is clearly based on the all-new Explorer, but we can't yet tell you much about the Explorer itself, as we're sworn to secrecy until Jan. 9 at … [Read more...] about Calling All SUVs: Ford Unveils 2020 Explorer-Based Police Interceptor Utility
Phoebe Wall Howard Detroit Free Press Published 7:45 AM EDT Oct 22, 2018 A secret meeting in 2015 between Ford Motor Co. and the UAW led to job security and a sigh of relief among factory workers three years later as they begin manufacturing the Ford Ranger midsize pickup truck at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne. “We were developing the idea around bringing the Ranger back, and the Bronco, as well,” Joe Hinrichs, president of global operations at Ford, told the Free Press last week. “We thought it made sense to build it in the United States at a plant with history.” The Wayne plant opened in 1957 and built Broncos from 1966 to 1996. So, in the spring of 2015, Hinrichs and then-UAW President Dennis Williams, and Williams' executive administrative assistant, Chuck Browning, met for a private lunch near the Detroit airport. Hinrichs asked how labor might feel if Ford moved production of the Ford Focus sedan from Michigan to Mexico, and then … [Read more...] about A secret lunch leads to a new Ford truck built in Michigan

DETROIT (AP) — A car that once was America’s top-seller is about to die — for a second time. Ford Taurus, may you rest in peace at the salvage yard. Blame the full-size sedan’s slow demise on the national obsession with SUVs and Ford Motor Co.’s need to slash costs and remake itself for a new era of self-driving cars and shuttles. Ford announced the car’s passing this week as part of major restructuring plan aimed at focusing capital spending on more popular SUVs and technology needed to morph Ford into a mobility company. The 114-year-old automaker said it would stop selling all car models in North America but two: the Mustang muscle car and a version of the compact Focus called Active. That means Ford’s Chicago plant will stop making Tauruses next March. North American production of the Focus compact car and Fiesta subcompact will halt in May, while the midsize Fusion lives a few more years before it departs. They’ll be replaced by five … [Read more...] about Once America’s best-selling car, the Ford Taurus dies, again
