Red Bull launches the new car on Monday in Jerez and they seem to be getting quite excited about it in the build up to the event. We've had Mark Webber saying that it's the best looking of the 2009 cars so far and their website is pretty gushing about it. It talks about the car being a creation from the drawing board (literally because he still uses one) of Adrian Newey. He's overdue a real winner of a car and this year is a pretty vital one for the team as they have to take a serious step closer to the front-runners to justify the massive investment. They have been threatening to do it for some time, but it's not materialised. They had reliability issues with the 2007 car, while last year, although the car was reliable, they went the wrong way on development just as the car was starting to show some real speed. After Webber qualified on the front row in Silverstone and then spun on the opening lap, it never returned to those giddy heights and scored just five points after … [Read more...] about What can we expect from Red Bull?

Pedal Cars At Goodwood, An Adorable Racing Legacy Continues
Will Dron’s hero is his dad. Paternal idealization isn’t a rare thing, sure, but Will’s admiration is well placed. Tony Dron was a racing driver, and the kind of chap who wouldn’t boast about it. To meet him you’d be blown away by how charming, kind, and humble he was. It’s only when you ask him about his adventures racing all over the world in all manner of cars (the Porsche 924 at Le Mans in 1980 was one of many special tales) would you realize he was a truly remarkable human being. “He didn’t have any family history of racing, or cars. He just took to them, and loved it. He went to watch Jim Clark at the Nürburgring with a friend of his from school, he watched him gliding through the forest in the back sections of the Nordschleife and thought: ‘My god, that is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. I have to do that,’” recalls Will, “He didn’t want to race… he had to race.” Tony passed away in 2021 after years of struggles with chronic pulmonary obstructive disease. A quick … [Read more...] about Pedal Cars At Goodwood, An Adorable Racing Legacy Continues

How F1’s last female racer stood little chance in a once-great team close to collapse
Three full decades have now passed since the last occasion a female racing driver was hired to race for a Formula 1 team. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free But Giovanna Amati’s time at Brabham proved brief, and never saw her start a race. She was widely considered to have been promoted beyond a level she was prepared for. She also had the misfortune to arrive at a team which was on its last legs, and would collapse just four months after Amati’s final appearance for them. Having taken Nelson Piquet to the drivers championship in 1983, Brabham’s descent was startlingly swift. Just five years later it disappeared from the grid – owner Bernie Ecclestone having steadily lost interest in a team which had won just three races in the interim, and become increasingly preoccupied with building his F1 empire.
