Cities in the United States, Mexico and Canada will find out June 16 if they've been selected to be one of the 16 host sites for the 2026 World Cup. There are expected to be three cities selected from Mexico, three more from Canada and 10 in the United States, which gives Houston's NRG Stadium an excellent shot at being picked. There are 17 United States stadiums in the running, which has been narrowed down from the original 38 stadiums that put in pitches to host. Only a handful of the finalists have the experience that Houston and NRG Stadium has in hosting big-time events. NRG Stadium has been home to two Super Bowls and two Final Fours, with another coming next year. It also will host the college football national championship game in January 2024. The stadium also has drawn more than 70,000 fans for soccer matches, including World Cup qualifiers and CONCACAF semifinals. Some of the other United States' favorites in the field include Pasadena, California's Rose Bowl - which … [Read more...] about Houston finds out in June if it will host 2026 World Cup matches

Protest walkout at Apec talks in Bangkok
Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit, centre, poses for photos with delegates at the APEC BCG Symposium 2022 in Bangkok on Friday. (Photo: Apec) Representatives of five economies including Japan and the United States walked out of the Apec trade ministers’ meeting in Bangkok on Saturday, in protest against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a Thai government source said. The two-day meeting by representatives of 21 economies forming the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum — which includes Russia — opened in Bangkok on Saturday, with the promotion of trade and investment in the post-Covid era high on the agenda. The protest was carried out when Maksim Reshetnikov, Russia’s economic development minister, was giving his remarks, according to the source. The meeting at the Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Centre at Central World is the first in-person gathering of regional trade ministers in three years, as travel restrictions due to the coronavirus … [Read more...] about Protest walkout at Apec talks in Bangkok
Why ‘Atlanta’ Season 3 was such a letdown
In its first two outings, the auteur-driven, genre-defying absurdist dramedy "Atlanta" - about an aimless, upwardly immobile Princeton dropout named Earn (played by series creator Donald Glover) who remakes himself as the manager of his cousin Alfred's (Brian Tyree Henry) fledgling rap career - was one of the most acclaimed shows on television. The crown jewel of its network, the already prestige-laden FX, it boasted Emmys, star power, buzz, influence and a rare, smirking wit that seldom got its due in the countless, and fully deserved, paeans to its trenchant social commentary and boundary-pushing experimentation. Perhaps the surest sign of its success is how many shows it's inspired; it's hard to imagine critic's darlings like "Dave," "Ramy" or "Reservation Dogs" existing without it. But Season 3, which premiered this spring after a four-year hiatus, has had a more mixed reception. Much of it follows the cousins on Al's (aka Paper Boi) latest European tour, where they're joined by … [Read more...] about Why ‘Atlanta’ Season 3 was such a letdown
Mariupol fighters ordered to stop fighting; Donbas region is ‘destroyed,’ Zelensky says
The remaining Ukrainian fighters at the Azovstal steel plant have received orders to stop fighting and give up their defense of their last foothold in the city of Mariupol, Denis Prokopenko, a commander of the far-right Azov Regiment said in a video Friday. Hundreds of fighters evacuated the besieged facility in a negotiated surrender between Moscow and Kyiv this week, but it was unclear how many were still inside. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Friday that a total of 1,900 Ukrainian fighters there had laid down their arms - a claim The Washington Post could not independently verify. In the country's eastern region, Ukrainian troops are fighting a Russian assault that President Volodymyr Zelensky described as "hell" in a nightly address. "Donbas is completely destroyed," he said, accusing Russian forces of bombing the city of Severodonetsk. As the battle rages, the Senate approved President Joe Biden's $40 billion package of fresh military, humanitarian and financial … [Read more...] about Mariupol fighters ordered to stop fighting; Donbas region is ‘destroyed,’ Zelensky says
Biden touts closer Asian ties on Korea visit
US President Joe Biden joins South Kroean President Yoon Suk-youl (second from left) and Samsung Electronics vice-chairman Lee Jae-yong (second from right) at the Samsung Electronic Pyeongtaek Campus in Pyeongtaek on Friday. (AFP Photo) SEOUL: President Joe Biden arrived in South Korea Friday, his first Asia trip as US leader, aiming to cement ties with regional security allies despite growing fears of a North Korean nuclear test. Biden wants the trip to reinvigorate a years-long US pivot to Asia, where rising Chinese commercial and military power is undercutting Washington’s dominance. He received a warm welcome from South Korea’s new President Yoon Suk-yeol, but there is growing concern that North Korea’s unpredictable leadership could conduct a nuclear test while he is in the region. There is a “real risk of some kind of provocation”, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said, as South Korean intelligence warned this week that Pyongyang had completed preparations for … [Read more...] about Biden touts closer Asian ties on Korea visit

Rick Bowness won’t return as coach of Dallas Stars
Rick Bowness will not return as head coach of the Dallas Stars after nearly three seasons in which he led them to the 2020 Stanley Cup Final and the playoffs again this year. While Bowness was not under contract past this season, the 67-year-old coach said in a statement released by the team Friday that he was stepping away to “allow the organization the opportunity to pursue a different direction at the head coaching position.” The move doesn't necessarily mean Bowness is done coaching. General manager Jim Nill said assistant coaches John Stevens, Derek Laxdal and Todd Nelson also would not return. Bowness has been on an NHL bench for a record 2,562 regular-season games as a head coach or an assistant over nearly four decades. He was 89-62-25 as head coach in Dallas, where he was a second-year assistant before being named interim head coach in December 2019 after Jim Montgomery was fired for off-ice issues. After the Stars made the Stanley Cup Final in that pandemic-altered … [Read more...] about Rick Bowness won’t return as coach of Dallas Stars
Florida appeals court reinstates DeSantis congressional map
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A new congressional map drawn by Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' staff that could diminish the state's Black representation in Washington was reinstated by an appeals court Friday, a week after a lower court judge said the map was unconstitutional. The 1st District Court of appeals ruled Judge Layne Smith erred when he ordered a replacement map be used for the 2022 election. The latest order means the governor's map is reinstated pending the outcome of a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the map. While the appeals court didn't address the constitutionality of the map, it did cite “the need for certainty and continuity as election season approaches.” The ruling comes as the state gets closer to the June 13 to 17 qualifying period for federal office. The DeSantis map would likely boost the number of Florida seats held by Republicans, while also making it difficult for Democratic U.S. Rep. Al Lawson to maintain his seat in a north Florida … [Read more...] about Florida appeals court reinstates DeSantis congressional map
