Loeb explains battery problem that caused WRC Safari Rally exit

June 24, 2022 by www.motorsport.com Leave a Comment

Listen to this article The nine-time world champion had rejoined M-Sport for the famous WRC event, 20 years on from his Safari Rally debut in 2002, to make his third start of the 2022 WRC campaign. After ending Thursday’s opening stage in fifth, Loeb started Friday by winning Stage 2 and went on to complete the morning loop of challenging gravel stages in fifth overall, 15.9s adrift of rally leader Elfyn Evans . However, once the 48-year-old completed Stage 4 the engine on his hybrid Rally1 Ford Puma cut out, before a small fire broke out in the engine bay that co-driver Isabelle Galmiche promptly extinguished. With the engine out of action, Loeb engaged electric power to navigate the road section back to the service park, but ran out of battery power and was forced to pull over five kilometres shy of service. Loeb said there was no warning of the engine issue before it struck. “We were going normally, we went to the stop control and the engine stopped,” Loeb told … [Read more...] about Loeb explains battery problem that caused WRC Safari Rally exit

Suspect Piyabutr Urai-ngam, 27, is arrested on suspicion of blackmailing girls through use of their nude photos, at his house in Lam Luk Ka district, Pathum Thani province, on Thursday morning. (Photo supplied) A man alleged to be involved in the suicide of a minor after having blackmailed her into sending explicit images of herself was released by the Criminal Court Saturday on 50,000-baht bail. Police from the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division (ATPD) took Piyabutr Urai-ngam, 27, to the court to seek approval for the first round of his detention. Bail was opposed by authorities who reasoned that the case carried a severe penalty, and the suspect poses a flight risk. The suspect, who worked as a call centre operator at a communications firm, was arrested at a house in tambon Khu Khot of Lam Luk Ka district, Pathum Thani province, on Thursday morning. He has been charged with possession of child pornography for sexual and commercial purposes. Despite police opposition, the … [Read more...] about Court grants bail to cosplay blackmailer

‘A tragedy’: Missouri’s last abortion clinic draws protesters decrying ban

June 25, 2022 by www.bangkokpost.com Leave a Comment

Protestors in Missouri gather at the state's last abortion clinic to decry a new ban on the procedure ST. LOUIS - Standing outside what had been the last remaining abortion clinic in Missouri on Friday, Pamela Lukehart choked back tears as she recalled how things were before the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision enshrining a woman's right to the procedure. "Women died getting abortions back then," the 68-year-old told AFP, her voice breaking as she stood alongside scores of other protesters. "We were trying to protect women's rights, women's lives, and now they've taken all that away from us." The conservative-dominated Supreme Court on Friday overturned its monumental decision in Roe v. Wade, putting an end to the federal right to abortions it established nearly 50 years ago. The seismic ruling immediately triggered a wave of right-leaning states to impose new bans on the procedure -- with Missouri being the first. Less than two hours after the court's decision, the … [Read more...] about ‘A tragedy’: Missouri’s last abortion clinic draws protesters decrying ban

Does Gasly’s renewal hint towards a McLaren future?

June 25, 2022 by www.planetf1.com Leave a Comment

Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri renewal is no long-term deal, as the French driver made very clear about his contract extension. “I have been with this team for five years now and I am proud of the journey we’ve been through together and the progress we have made,” said Pierre Gasly, as his position as an AlphaTauri driver for 2023 was confirmed on Friday . “I’m happy to remain with my Scuderia AlphaTauri team. This year’s new regulations have created new challenges for us and being able to plan our development with the team for the next 18 months is a good working basis for the future.” Gasly’s words are striking, in that there are no vague allusions to the future or any pretence that he has any further interest in a long-term project at his current team. Instead, he appears to have put a very firm timeline on the length of time he expects to remain with the Red Bull outfit – perhaps an unsurprising stance to take as the French driver continues to tread water in the midfield. … [Read more...] about Does Gasly’s renewal hint towards a McLaren future?

Newey recalls how op came with chance of brain damage

June 25, 2022 by www.planetf1.com Leave a Comment

Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey has detailed how he turned down an operation after fracturing his skull in a cycling accident last year, after doctors said there was a small chance of him getting brain damage during the procedure. Newey suffered serious injuries after plunging six feet off a cycle path a night while with wife Amanda, suffering multiple skull fractures combined with chipping a bone above his eye muscle after hitting his head on a stony beach. Amanda described towards the end of last year about how “miraculous” his recovery was, but the Red Bull technical boss decided to press on with the job at hand after taking time off to recuperate. “No, I’m sufficiently pig-headed that it didn’t change much,” Newey told the Evening Standard when asked if easing his workload crossed his mind in the aftermath of his incident. He had a round of craniotomy surgery to repair the damage to his skull – returning to the pit wall virtually just 10 days later – … [Read more...] about Newey recalls how op came with chance of brain damage

Szafnauer welcomes Netflix presence in team meetings

June 25, 2022 by www.planetf1.com Leave a Comment

Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer believes Netflix gaining behind-the-scenes access to key meetings could prove to be a good thing for the sport’s visibility in the popular Drive to Survive series. Netflix cameras were reportedly present inside a fiery meeting of the team bosses ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, discussing the implications of the FIA’s new technical directive, which is aimed at limited the amount of bouncing or porpoising the drivers can experience. Red Bull’s Christian Horner and Mercedes’ Toto Wolff reportedly clashed in the meeting, accusing him and other team principals of playing “political games” in trying to imply that the new directive disproportionately helps Mercedes, given they have been the team arguably most affected by bouncing this season. Szafnauer pointed to the example set in the Senna documentary released in 2010, which showed rare footage inside heated driver briefings and protests against the FIA – and allowing Netflix into … [Read more...] about Szafnauer welcomes Netflix presence in team meetings

Russia will soon exhaust its combat capabilities, Western assessments predict

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 The Russian military will soon exhaust its combat capabilities and be forced to bring its offensive in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region to a grinding halt, according to Western intelligence predictions and military experts. "There will come a time when the tiny advances Russia is making become unsustainable in light of the costs and they will need a significant pause to regenerate capability," said a senior Western official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive issue. The assessments come despite continued Russian advances against outgunned Ukrainian forces, including the capture on Friday of the town of Severodonetsk, the biggest urban center taken by Russia in the east since launching the latest Donbas offensive nearly three months ago. The Russians are now closing in on the adjacent city of Lysychank, on the opposite bank of the Donetsk river. The town's … [Read more...] about Russia will soon exhaust its combat capabilities, Western assessments predict
