The FIA’s announcement yesterday of a restructuring of its Formula 1 operation is intended to draw a line under a process which began in response to the controversial conclusion to the 2021 world championship. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free It will inevitably focus attention on whether the sport’s governing body can reduce the confusion, inconsistencies and errors which created too many problems during races last year. The FIA embarked on an “analysis and clarification exercise” three days after the 2021 season ended in bitter recriminations at Yas Marina . The outcome appeared three months later as a 3,300-word report which laid out the reasoning for a raft of changes to how the sport’s governing body runs the races which constitute its most prestigious championship. Race director Michael Masi was removed from his position for failing to enforce the series’ rules correctly in the final lap restart which decided the destiny of the 2021 drivers’ title. … [Read more...] about The errors the FIA must not repeat in 2023 after completing F1 race control overhaul · RaceFans

Hill wins, Schumacher stars on acrimonious weekend · RaceFans
The tragedies of Imola and the traumas of the weeks that followed pushed Formula One to breaking point as the fifth round of the championship in Spain drew near. The weekend began with the threat of a drivers’ strike, which was followed by the mass withdrawal of the majority of teams from the first practice session. And when the cars finally took to the track, another serious crash further heightened fears over safety. But the race eventually went ahead and, for the first time that year, Michael Schumacher failed to win it. But by bringing his ar home second despite spending two-thirds of the race stuck in fifth gear, it was arguably his finest performance of the season. Crisis meeting over safety The Circuit de Catalunya held its fourth Spanish Grand Prix in 1994, and 27 cars were entered for the race. The only single-car entry belonged to Sauber, as Karl Wendlinger remained in a coma following his crash in Monaco . The day after Wendlinger’s crash, FIA president Max … [Read more...] about Hill wins, Schumacher stars on acrimonious weekend · RaceFans

F1 circuits history part 14: 1999-2002 · RaceFans
At the end of 1990s Formula 1 began to look east. With the teams hit by ever-tighter restrictions on tobacco advertising, and eastern countries offering less tight restrictions, moving the sport beyond its traditional heartland made good commercial sense. The fact that it bolstered the sport’s claim to being a ‘world’ championship was merely a bonus. The return of the United States to the calendar was a shot in the arm for that particular claim as well. But while the Indianapolis road course was a far better venue than many that had been tried in the 1980s, F1 repeatedly shot itself in the foot, and the race was dropped last year. Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia As the millennium turned Tilke?s influence over the F1 calendar continued to grow. His next project was an all-new circuit in Malaysia, just outside the capital Kuala Lumpur. This was the beginning of a new direction for F1. The enormous economic potential of the eastern nations was starting to be … [Read more...] about F1 circuits history part 14: 1999-2002 · RaceFans

Formula One goes on economy drive "But what drove me to distraction was all this one-stop strategy, two-stop strategy business and the times when positions only changed when someone stopped at the garage. This virtual overtaking didn't make for satisfactory sport." Early deetails of 2009 BBC F1 coverage "I have also managed to get a quick look at a (very) provisional Grand Prix Night schedule full of holes, but it gives us a general idea of what is happening:" Sidepodtour Heads North to Grove "We were treated to a lesson in ground effects, saw the six-wheeled FW08B up close and decided that the more modern BMW powered machines were by far the best looking of the lot." Tata Enters the Game "We bemoan (quite rightly) the fact that the traditional circuits of Europe and North America are gradually being phased out of the sport in favor of new tracks in developing nations; but let us not forget that the auto industry has already shifted its center of gravity to … [Read more...] about F1 links: Provisional BBC F1 schedule · RaceFans
Australian GP: Rosberg beats home hero Ricciardo – F1 Fanatic
Every year the mantra of Melbourne is that the first race of the year tends not to give an accurate impression of the season to come. Last year Adrian Sutil led a chunk of the race and Kimi Raikkonen won it – two things which never happened again. Albert Park is something of an outlier as F1 circuits go. It’s a temporary facility which isn’t shaped in the derivative mould of more recent additions to the calendar. It tends to produce unusual results. That counts double when qualifying is disrupted by rain, as happened on Saturday. And again when many teams arrive at the first race of the year with so much potential still untapped in their new designs. But the emphatic, assured manner of Nico Rosberg’s cruise to success affirmed every suspicion around Mercedes pre-season test form. They are in very strong shape indeed, and in the opening phase of the season the contest for victory is likely to be exclusively between their two drivers. Engine failures sideline champions … [Read more...] about Australian GP: Rosberg beats home hero Ricciardo – F1 Fanatic
Early rift over immigration exposes House GOP’s tough path to consensus
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 WASHINGTON - House Republicans' attempt to bring a border security bill to the floor as early as this week was thwarted after backlash from more moderate Republicans, delaying not only a pledge Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) made to a handful of lawmakers but also the fulfillment of a key campaign promise to a Republican base eager for tougher immigration laws. The bill, introduced by Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and co-sponsored by 58 Republicans, would empower the Homeland Security secretary - currently Alejandro Mayorkas - to unilaterally bar all undocumented migrants from entering the United States through any point of entry if the secretary deems it necessary to reestablish "operational control" of the border. If immigration agencies cannot, for any reason, process undocumented migrants according to legal procedures, a similar response by the secretary would be required. If the … [Read more...] about Early rift over immigration exposes House GOP’s tough path to consensus
I wrote about high-priced drugs for years. Then my toddler needed one.
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 When a salmon-colored rash flared on my 3-year-old son's tummy one afternoon in August, I shrugged it off. The next time I asked Evan to lift up his shirt to take a photo, it was gone. When he stopped sleeping through the night, I thought it was a dreadful new developmental phase. But then on a Saturday, he stopped walking and spiked a 104-degree fever. A nurse gave me clear directions: "Get in your car, and start driving to the ER." After days in the hospital, the doctors had ruled out a long list of infections, as well as scary conditions like leukemia. That left them circling around a rare type of childhood arthritis called systemic onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis, or sJIA, in which the innate immune system, the body's first line of defense against pathogens, goes haywire. Young children are tormented by daily spiking fevers, a fleeting rash and arthritis. Some develop a … [Read more...] about I wrote about high-priced drugs for years. Then my toddler needed one.

Chinese Grand Prix driver-by-driver Mercedes Lewis Hamilton – A handful of off-track moments indicated he was less than happy with the car on Friday. But he might as well have stayed in bed on Saturday as a power unit fault wrecked his qualifying attempt. After picking up front wing damage in the first corner melee Hamilton was still in 21st place when the race restarted. Racing a wounded car once again – Hamilton suspected damage to his suspension as well as aerodynamics, and said the W07 “seemed to be flexing all over the place” – he nonetheless got stuck into the midfield and ran as high as third at one point. However he was forced to use medium tyres for his final stint which confined him to seventh place. Nico Rosberg – With Hamilton compromised and Ferrari tripping up in qualifying, … [Read more...] about Vote for your 2016 Chinese Grand Prix Driver of the Weekend · RaceFans
