Verstappen’s lead was challenged on the run to the first corner by the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri but he clung on to his advantage and dominated from there. Piastri got ahead of Norris when he benefited from a virtual safety car while in the pits, but Norris was faster in the middle stages of the race, so McLaren swapped their positions. Mercedes ’ George Russell looked to be a threat to McLaren’s 2-3, due to gambling on a one-stop strategy, but was passed in the late stages by Piastri, Charles Leclerc ( Ferrari ), Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari). 2023 F1 Japanese Grand Prix results Cla Nº Driver Car / Engine Laps Gap 1 1 Max Verstappen Red Bull/Honda RBPT 53 - 2 4 Lando Norris McLaren/Mercedes 53 -19.387 3 81 Oscar Piastri McLaren/Mercedes 53 -36.494 4 16 Charles Leclerc Ferrari 53 -43.998 … [Read more...] about 2023 F1 Japanese GP results: Verstappen beats McLaren duo

F1 results: 2023 Japanese Grand Prix results and standings
Here are the complete results from the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, where an intriguing race played out in the afternoon sunshine. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has dominated the Japanese Grand Prix from start to finish, having weathered a first-corner attack from the two McLarens that briefly saw Lando Norris get ahead into Turn 1. The two McLarens held on to take second and third place, but in inverted positions from their grid slots as Norris clearly demonstrated more pace to be given the nod for a team swap. Norris finished some 20 seconds behind Verstappen and, in turn, 15 seconds clear of Piastri. A race of attrition as Red Bull wraps up Constructors’ Championship There was carnage early on, with Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas picking up a front puncture and front wing damage in a collision with Williams’ Alex Albon – both would eventually retire due to damage. Sergio Perez was in the wars as well, picking up front wing damage on the first lap in a clash with … [Read more...] about F1 results: 2023 Japanese Grand Prix results and standings
Norris accuses Perez of costing him “10 seconds” during VSC period
Lando Norris was infuriated at losing a significant amount of time behind Sergio Perez during a Virtual Safety Car period in the Japanese Grand Prix. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free The McLaren driver was pursuing Perez’s team mate Max Verstappen , who was leading the race, when the Virtual Safety Car period began on lap 14. It was triggered after Perez collided with Kevin Magnussen while trying to pass the Haas driver. Perez emerged from the pits shortly before the VSC period began and immediately reported his car was handling badly. Verstappen swept by him in the lead and the VSC was deployed seconds later. Although drivers were required to slow to the same speed under the VSC, Norris caught Perez, and was unsure whether he was allowed to pass the Red Bull driver. In an increasingly frustrated exchange with his race engineer Will Joseph, Norris repeatedly asked whether he should pass Perez. Joseph even suggested Perez could be “doing it on purpose” … [Read more...] about Norris accuses Perez of costing him “10 seconds” during VSC period
Perez given four penalty points for two incidents in Japanese Grand Prix
Sergio Perez collected four penalty points in a single race after being involved in two separate incidents in the Japanese Grand Prix. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free The Red Bull driver was penalised for overtaking Fernando Alonso under Safety Car conditions on his way into the pits and colliding with Kevin Magnussen at the hairpin. Following Perez’s retirement from the race Red Bull returned him to the track, 25 laps down, in order to ensure he served the second of two five-second time penalties he was given for the incidents. He also received two penalty points for each, moving him onto a total of seven. Any driver who reaches 12 penalty points in a 12-month period receives an automatic one-race ban. “It was just a disastrous weekend,” Perez told F1TV. “It all started into turn one with a really bad start and I was squeezed down and I was just a passenger then in a sandwich. I think we carried a lot of damage in the car as well and that just made it … [Read more...] about Perez given four penalty points for two incidents in Japanese Grand Prix
Verstappen explains “tight” McLaren battle into F1 Japanese GP first corner
Verstappen was largely unchallenged throughout the Suzuka race en route to a commanding win but faced a battle against the fast-starting pair of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris into the first corner. Front-row starter Piastri flanked Verstappen as the race began with third-placed Norris on the Dutchman's left, which Verstappen reckoned gave him limited space to work with to ward them both off. Explaining his defensive efforts, Verstappen explained that both McLaren cars had made a "jump" off the line and that keeping the inside line from Piastri's clutches was his first port of call. "Of course, the start was a bit tight in the first two corners, but after that, the car was very nice to drive again," Verstappen said. "I saw in the right mirror that Oscar had a little bit of a jump on me, but then at the same time, I saw in my left mirror that Lando had a real jump on me. "I tried to close off Oscar but he was still there, and then I saw on the left side Lando coming … [Read more...] about Verstappen explains “tight” McLaren battle into F1 Japanese GP first corner
Another Verstappen win makes Red Bull champions again as Piastri reaches podium
Max Verstappen took another comfortable victory in the Japanese Grand Prix ahead of the two McLaren drivers to win the constructors’ championship for Red Bull. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Oscar Piastri secured his first podium finish in his rookie season, taking the chequered flag third behind team mate Lando Norris. Despite Sergio Perez failing to finish after collisions with two other drivers, Verstappen’s win was easily enough to clinch the title for his team. At the start of the race, Piastri lined up alongside pole winner Verstappen on the front row. When the lights went out, the McLaren drivers attacked the Red Bull from both sides, Piastri on the inside, Norris the outside, but Verstappen held his lead as Norris moved ahead of his team mate into second. Back in the pack, there were multiple collisions between Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton and, further back, Valtteri Bottas, Kevin Magnussen and Alexander Albon. That left debris strewn … [Read more...] about Another Verstappen win makes Red Bull champions again as Piastri reaches podium
Sainz “laughing in the car” as Mercedes repeated DRS trick in Japan
In the closing laps of last weekend's street race in the Marina Bay track, Sainz slowed down to give DRS to the following Lando Norris in an attempt to keep George Russell and Lewis Hamilton behind on their fresher tyres. In the end, the ploy worked, and Sainz and Norris finished first and second, with Hamilton taking third after Russell crashed on the last lap. At Suzuka, the positions were reversed with Sainz catching up with Russell and Hamilton, who were running fifth and sixth. On older tyres, Russell was told to invert the positions and let Hamilton through, and Russell then asked if Hamilton could in turn give him DRS and help him to defend from Sainz. Hamilton responded "understood" but the strategy only worked briefly before Sainz got past Russell, having told his team "They are using my tricks against me!" Sainz admitted that he found the scenario unfolding in front of him amusing. "Yeah, I found it [funny], actually," he said when asked by … [Read more...] about Sainz “laughing in the car” as Mercedes repeated DRS trick in Japan
Norris says McLaren “not miles away” from Verstappen after P2 in Japan
Norris and team-mate Oscar Piastri finished second and third at Suzuka as McLaren scored its first double podium of the season. McLaren started the season with a pair of scoreless races but has since developed the MCL60 into what is more often than not the second-best car on the grid, behind only Red Bull's constructors' championship-winning RB19. Although Norris finished 19 seconds off Verstappen in the race, team-mate Piastri was comfortably clear of fourth-placed Charles Leclerc at the chequered flag as he scored his first F1 podium. "Another amazing day for us," said Norris. "P2 and P3, so we couldn't have asked for any more. "The team did an amazing job. My start was very good. I almost had Max, but Max is Max as well. I didn't have a lot of chance in Turn 2, but I tried. "The pace was extremely strong today, compared to everyone. And I mean, we're not close to Max, but we're not miles away either. So it was a very good day. I'm very happy also for Oscar, his … [Read more...] about Norris says McLaren “not miles away” from Verstappen after P2 in Japan
Radio messages reveal Pierre Gasly’s fury with Alpine after Esteban Ocon team order
Pierre Gasly conceded ninth place to Esteban Ocon on the final lap of the Japanese Grand Prix, having received an order he wasn’t happy about. Gasly had been running in ninth place with a lap to go at Suzuka, only to cross the line in 10th place after Esteban Ocon got past on the final lap – the circumstances for which weren’t immediately clear as Gasly didn’t appear to have suffered a mechanical issue. Intriguingly, Gasly had also shown some anger crossing the line, sticking up his middle finger in apparent disgust – even if it wasn’t clear who that anger was aimed at. Alpine radio messages reveal team order to give position to Esteban Ocon While Alpine were set to score ninth and 10th anyway, the team made the call to swap the two drivers around in the closing stages of the race – a decision Gasly was apparently furious about. Ocon had pitted on Lap 1 to ditch his mediums and swap to the hard tyres, running two long hard tyre stints to the chequered flag. With Gasly … [Read more...] about Radio messages reveal Pierre Gasly’s fury with Alpine after Esteban Ocon team order
