Listen to this article Many feared these limits could lead to a batch of identikit machines, with only liveries and negligible design differences being the means to tell them apart. However, as F1 teams unleashed their 2022 machines at the start of the new era, it became apparent that these worries had been misguided as there were clear areas of wriggle room for designers to express themselves and make a difference. These elements proved to be a driving force in the tech battle last year, and that means they will equally be important considerations for teams as they hone their 2023 challengers. As we look at the design aspects that could make the difference in the forthcoming campaign, the obvious starting point is sidepods – all teams have had a rethink from a solution that Ferrari pioneered in 2017 and the rest of the grid had followed suit by the close of 2021. George Russell’s warning to Red Bull and Ferrari ahead of F1 2023 title fight
George Russell is adamant Mercedes “haven’t forgotten” how to build a race-winning car, they just went down a “wrong route” with the 2022 W13. The eight-times reigning Constructors’ Championship struggles with their ill-tempered W13 last season, the car bouncing from one track to another. With technical director Andrew Shovlin conceding it was “bordering on dangerous” at some circuits, Mercedes first had to resolve the porpoising before they could develop the car. That made for a difficult first half of the season, although the Brackley squad was the most-improved team in the back half of the championship. Shovlin has thanked the drivers for that, saying the two were “working together, they were happy to share out the workload” . Russell reckons he is “very privileged” to have someone of Hamilton’s calibre as his team-mate. He told BBC Radio Norfolk: “It takes some time whenever you join a new team, regardless of who your team-mate is, to embed yourself and gain that trust … [Read more...] about George Russell’s warning to Red Bull and Ferrari ahead of F1 2023 title fight
Brawn: Italian GP shows why F1 needs reverse grid races · RaceFans
Formula 1 motorsport director Ross Brawn says the Italian Grand Prix shows why the series should consider introducing reverse grid races. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Brawn unsuccessfully tried to introduce reverse grid sprint races for three rounds of the 2020 F1 season . He revealed the Italian Grand Prix was one of the events which the format was under consideration for. “Monza was a candidate for a reverse grid sprint race when we were considering testing the format this year,” said Brawn. “Unfortunately, we could not move forward with it, but the concept is still something we and the FIA want to work through in the coming months and discuss with the teams for next year.” Brawn’s attempt to introduce reverse grid races this year was thwarted as the unanimous support of the teams was required to introduce it. Two teams, Mercedes and Racing Point, opposed the plan. However changes to Formula 1’s governance process following the signing of the new … [Read more...] about Brawn: Italian GP shows why F1 needs reverse grid races · RaceFans
Aston Martin take a dig at Alpine’s ‘100-race’ plan to fight for F1 titles
Aston Martin team boss Mike Krack has had a little dig at Alpine’s “100-race” plan for championship success, saying his team is at least investing towards making that dream a reality. Back in 2021 Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi spoke of a “100-race project, four years, four seasons” for the team to be fighting for the championship titles with team boss Otmar Szafnauer recently referring to it. But while most will say Rossi’s countdown back in 2021, Szafnauer seems to think it only started when he joined the team prior to the 2022 season after leaving Aston Martin. “ I think we’re down to less than 80 now ,” he told Motorsport.com. “The 100 started in early 2022. So it’s less than 80 from now.” But whether the 58-year-old is right in his numbers, or has given the team a bit of leeway, Krack has all but questioned what Alpine are doing to reach that goal. Unlike Aston Martin, he says, who are investing heavily in the future with a new wind tunnel and state-of-the-art factory. … [Read more...] about Aston Martin take a dig at Alpine’s ‘100-race’ plan to fight for F1 titles

‘Big meeting’ looming in January with new PU regulations being ‘tidied up’
F1’s chief technical officer Pat Symonds confirmed that a meeting will soon take place with the teams as the F1 2026 regulations take shape. From that year on the new generation of Formula 1 power units will come into effect, ones simplified with the axing of the MGU-H element, while the reliance on electrical power increases and a fully-sustainable fuel is introduced for use with the Internal Combustion Engine. The power unit regulations are already out and published, with FIA approval, though work is still ongoing with the manufacturers to fine-tune the details, and in a January meeting, the teams now will be brought into the mix to start discussing the chassis regulations. “The power unit regulations are out and published, they’re not finished, we’re now really tidying up,” Symonds told PlanetF1.com and other F1 media outlets at an Autosport International Business Forum. “The chassis regulations we have been working on for a while now, a couple of years on some basic … [Read more...] about ‘Big meeting’ looming in January with new PU regulations being ‘tidied up’
A new-look RB19? Red Bull tease ‘blank canvas’ with social media post
Just one week before revealing Max Verstappen’s new RB19, Red Bull have teased a “blank canvas” livery that has fans speculating about a refreshed 2023 design. The Formula 1 World Champions are set to reveal the machine Verstappen and Sergio Perez will pilot for their defence of the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles on February 3, with a launch event planned in New York. The RB18 will be a tough act to follow after the Austrian team’s 2022 concept sped into the history books as one of F1’s most dominant cars, propelling Verstappen to a single-season record of 15 Grand Prix victories. We’ll have to wait until the Bahrain pre-season tests to begin on February 23 for a slight indication of the new Red Bull’s pace but fans are wasting no time speculating about its aesthetics. The teaser released by Red Bull on Friday shows an all-white RB19, the livery completely untouched apart from their title sponsor’s trademark charging bull. The social media post is simply captioned: “Blank … [Read more...] about A new-look RB19? Red Bull tease ‘blank canvas’ with social media post
