F1 considered plan for 2020 Miami street race through tunnel – F1 Fanatic
Formula One considered a plan to incorporate the PortMiami Tunnel as part of a street circuit within the Florida city. However the most radical part of the proposal, which would have seen cars winding left and right underground, has since been ruled out. The proposal for a Miami grand prix, which could appear on the 2020 F1 calendar , was based on roads around the AmericanAirlines Arena where Formula E held a one-off race two years ago. The Miami Herald reported on Tuesday a possible route had been considered which ran along Biscayne Boulevard, past the AmericanAirlines Arena, over the causeway to Dodge Island and through the PortMiami Tunnel. Nonetheless F1 is still looking for a viable circuit in Miami, which is one of its target locations for a second race in the USA . F1 CEO Chase Carey has identified the city along with New York, Las Vegas and California as potential future venues. Miami film and cultural administrator Vicente Betancourt said Formula One … [Read more...] about F1 considered plan for 2020 Miami street race through tunnel – F1 Fanatic
Justices say veteran who lost job as Texas trooper can sue state
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed a former state trooper to sue Texas over his claim that he was forced out of his job when he returned from Army service in Iraq. The justices ruled for Army veteran Le Roy Torres under a federal law that was enacted in 1994 in the wake of the Persian Gulf war to strengthen job protections for returning service members. By a 5-4 vote, the high court rejected Texas' claim that it is shielded from such lawsuits. “Text, history, and precedent show that the States, in coming together to form a Union, agreed to sacrifice their sovereign immunity for the good of the common defense,” Justice Stephen Breyer wrote for the court. Justice Clarence Thomas, joined by three other conservative justices, dissented, arguing that “when the States ratified the Constitution, they did not implicitly consent to private damages actions filed in their own courts—whether authorized by Congress’ war powers or any other Article I power.” Article I … [Read more...] about Justices say veteran who lost job as Texas trooper can sue state
How parents can help kids embrace math for future career success
(BPT) - What do construction of the St. Louis Arch, overseeing the grocery service counter and the management of big data have in common? The answer is simple: math. Without the level of knowledge that math provides, the Gateway Arch might not have been completed, the grocer would not be able to manage its daily operations and every business that relies on data would grind to a halt. Math is everywhere. But just saying the word “math” is likely to produce groans from both adults and children. Math often gets a bad reputation for being complicated to learn, uninteresting or a skill most people won’t need in their lives. For many young learners, math starts out fun. But along the way, concepts become more abstract and math anxiety sets in. Left unchecked, this can harm long-term learning and even impact kids’ future careers in a growing number of STEM fields. But experts say parents can help children develop a positive math mindset and embrace math as a core lifelong skill. Why … [Read more...] about How parents can help kids embrace math for future career success

(The Conversation is an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts.) Andrii Parkhomenko, University of Southern California and Eunjee Kwon, University of Cincinnati (THE CONVERSATION) The Research Brief is a short take about interesting academic work. The big idea If companies allowed more of their employees to permanently work from home, businesses would gravitate toward city centers, while people would primarily live in the periphery, resulting in less traffic congestion and falling real estate prices downtown. Those are our main findings from a model we created to forecast pandemic-driven changes in Los Angeles. Many of these changes were beginning to happen back in the spring of 2020, when we began this research. We wanted to build a model that could show the effects of more widespread telecommuting over a long period of time post-pandemic. Our model is like an artificial world – think Sim City – in which virtual people … [Read more...] about Pandemic’s impacts on how people live and work may change city centers for decades to come
