Cars.com's multicar comparison results aren't magic. Our expert judges spend a week driving and comparing vehicles in the best way anyone can evaluate competitors: back to back. Judges include Cars.com editors and, often, an in-market shopper who take each car on identical routes to uncover the little idiosyncrasies that in some cases can determine the difference between a winner and a loser. 2018 Subcompact SUV ChallengeResults | How We Tested | Video Our judges' opinions account for a large portion of determining a contestant's score, but depending on the class, we also include objective scoring in the form of fuel economy, car seat fitment, safety features and/or crash worthiness, acceleration and braking. In the three years since we tested members of a growing class of the smallest SUVs, the class in question has only heated up, adding new models and shedding few old ones. So we gathered three newcomers — the Ford EcoSport, Hyundai Kona and Nissan Rogue Sport — and pitted them against a newly redesigned version of our previous winner, the Subaru Crosstrek. 2018 Subcompact SUV ChallengeHow We Tested | Video We set a price cap of $26,000 (including destination charges), as equipped, and required automatic transmissions and the availability of all-wheel drive, but left drive type to the manufacturer's discretion, which led to a 50/50 split of front- and all-wheel drive among our contestants. All were 2018 models except the oddly characterized 2018.5 Nissan Rogue Sport, so named for the late addition of several active-safety features as standard equipment. Test vehicles included the Ford EcoSport SE FWD, Hyundai Kona SEL AWD, Nissan Rogue Sport SV FWD and Subaru Crosstrek … [Read more...] about What’s the Best Subcompact SUV for 2018?
Automakers have responded to the SUV boom by creating more and more offerings, even among the tiniest of vehicles. When we first compared the then-new subcompact SUV class in 2015, the Subaru Crosstrek came out on top in a field of seven vehicles. 2018 Subcompact SUV ChallengeResults | How We Tested | Video Now we're back to do it again in 2018. Our requirements for vehicles for this test included a price of no more than $26,000, including destination fees, and the availability of all-wheel drive on the vehicle — sorry, Toyota C-HR and Kia Niro. Our judges put the vehicles through a variety of tests. They compared everything from safety features to cargo space to interior material quality — and everything in between. They also spent significant time driving each competitor to get a clear … [Read more...] about 2018 Subcompact SUV Challenge: Will History Repeat or a Newcomer Prevail?

First up is the new-to-the-U.S. 2018 Ford EcoSport. The EcoSport has been around in other global markets for years, but 2018 was the first model year buyers on these shores could purchase. Related: 2018 Ford EcoSport Video Review Our requirements for the Challenge were simple: Vehicles had to have an as-tested price of $26,000 or less including destination, and they had to be available with all-wheel drive, though we did not stipulate a requirement for AWD in the cars we tested. The EcoSport we evaluated was a mid-level SE trim, which adds key features like Ford's Sync 3 multimedia system, a sunroof and rear parking sensors. Painted Ruby Red Metallic, our tester paired a turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. Inside the EcoSport, Sync 3 added Apple … [Read more...] about Ford-eign Exchange Student: 2018 Ford EcoSport Challenges Competitors
Volkswagen’s crossover family has increased to the point where it counts three members: the Touareg, Tiguan and T-Roc, and a fourth one, the T-Cross, is expected this fall. Snapped testing at the Nurburgring recently, the smallest Volkswagen SUV will enter the ever-crowded subcompact segment, where it will have to do battle with the likes of the Hyundai Kona, Peugeot 2008, Renault Captur and Nissan Juke, among others. Judging by the latest spy video, the T-Cross looks just about ready for its big premiere. It has shed a lot of camouflage compared to previous scoops, and once all of it will come off, it will likely reveal headlamps similar to those of the larger Tiguan, flanking the signature grille seen on the brand’s latest products. Also Watch: Volkswagen T-Roc’s Interior Won’t Earn It Any Fans The T-Cross will share most of its interior with the Polo, on which it is based, and borrow some cues from the larger T-Roc. Thus, expect a similar dashboard layout, … [Read more...] about Volkswagen T-Cross Is Almost Ready To Enter The Subcompact SUV Fray
