There’s one place where you can get great fried chicken livers on a Sunday morning in Georgia, before church is out. It’s a low-ceiling kind of place, tacked on to a gas station, the hallmark of fine low-priced dining across the south. Over the first glorious spring weekend this year, I had just the thing to get there. And I knew the fastest way to get there, not the highway route, but a snake-backed two-lane with enough kinks to merit its own DSM classification. It’s the 2018 Porsche 911 GT3, a car so blisteringly fast it set a stunning 7:12.7 lap time on the Nurburgring. With the 911 GT3, Porsche isn’t chasing raw numbers, though. “We’re chasing a feel,” Porsche’s sports-car guru Andreas Preuninger told us last year. MORE: The Porsche 911 GT3 doesn’t care about lap times, so just deal with it How does it get there? All the usual freak flags fly with its 4.0-liter flat-6 engine. Like any other living, breathing creature, the 911 … [Read more...] about 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 first drive review: Country roads and chicken livers

The 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 is a dream car. It's a track-bred monster that you can take home and keep in the garage. There's no question that it's incredible to drive; my Cars.com colleague Aaron Bragman recently spent some quality time with the 911 GT3 out on the track at Roebling Road Raceway near Savannah, Ga., and walked away smitten. Related: 2018 Porsche 911 GT3: Icon of the Road Hits the Track I, of course, had to put that conclusion to the test for myself on a driving date through the canyons of Los Angeles (OK, maybe like three dates), and I can definitively say this: It's a hell of a car. Everything works in such wonderful harmony, from the suspension to the dialed-in steering to the naturally aspirated flat-six-cylinder engine that sings all the way up to nearly 9,000 rpm. Driving the Porsche 911 GT3 hard is a uniquely rewarding experience, and it's the rare car that makes you a better driver. I didn't come close to touching its limit as a nonprofessional race driver, but … [Read more...] about 2018 Porsche 911 GT3: Great to Date, But Is It Monogamy Material?
The 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 RS has been spotted at the Nurburgring again. Folks at Bridge to Gantry have been timing the car as it set hot lap after hot lap and it is believed to have clocked a sub-7 min lap. According to Dale Lomas and his trusty stopwatch, the GT3 RS was clocked at 6 min 56 seconds. That’s 9 seconds slower than the 700 hp GT2 RS. Meanwhile, Chevrolet has also been gunning for Nurburgring glory. The Corvette ZR1 was spotted at the track, however it couldn’t match the pace set by the GT3 RS. The ZR1 registered an unofficial time of 7 min 12 seconds. Still, that’s 7 seconds faster than its predecessor, the C6 Corvette ZR1. The current production car lap record of the track stands at 6 min 47.3 seconds set by the 911 GT2 RS back in September 2017. That said, the ultimate lap record of 6 min 11.1 seconds set by Stefan Bellof in a Porsche 956 back in 1983 still stands to this day. Porsche is likely to challenge it later this year in their 919 Evo LMP1 … [Read more...] about 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 RS may have set a sub-7 min Nurburgring lap
Tweet TweetThe Porsche 911 GT3 in its newest form will arrive in the Land Down Under this autumn, the sports car being set with a base price of AU$327,100. Even if it comes with a spicy price, the all-new 2018 Porsche 911 GT3, which is considered the most powerful variant, now features both an automatic as well a newly-introduced six-manual transmission. The 911 GT3 was criticized for not receiving a manual transmission, but with the 2018 GT3 991.5-based model, it is now offered with the aforementioned gearbox, offering purists the real thrill of driving an exquisite model. Under the hood, the all-new 2018 Porsche GT3 packs the brand-new 4.0-liter naturally-aspirated six-cylinder engine, now churning out 368 kW, which his rather the same power and torque as the 911 GT3 Cup racer.
