Vehicles Affected: Approximately 27,000 model-year 2017 Kia Niro hybrid hatchbacks The Problem: The hydraulic clutch actuator inner oil seal may leak, allowing oil to accumulate in the cap area, possibly resulting in an electrical short and increasing the risk of a fire. The Fix: Dealers will inspect the HCA caps for leaked oil and replace the HCA assembly if needed, or replace the HCA cap with additional sealant. Both repairs will be done for free. What Owners Should Do: Kia will begin notifying owners June 15. Tweet TweetIt’s a HUV. If you search this abbreviation on internet, you’ll probably find “Homeless Utility Vehicle”. However, it’s not the case here: the Koreans say it’s a Hybrid Utility Vehicle. So what exactly offers the Niro? It offers an un-hybrid design, which is good. I must admit that most of the people say “hybrid cars are ugly”. No, not all of them look odd. In fact, Niro looks quite dynamic, thanks to the low roof line and short rear overhang. Surely, it’s not the most aerodynamic hybrid, with its 0.29 drag coefficient, but sometimes sacrifices are necesary. It is the first Kia to be built on the all-new eco-car platform, which will help the Koreans to triple the green car line until 2020. Later, it will receive a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Another interesting fact: unlike most of the hybrid car manufacturers, Kia spent lots of time and materials to develop a quiet interior, regardless of the increased weight of the … [Read more...] about 2017 Kia Niro Hybrid at Chicago Auto Show
Some plug-in hybrid models are easily distinguishable from the rest of the cars their maker sells. Others, like the 2018 Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid, are all but invisible. It takes a sharp eye to see the charging port door on the left-front fender or the trim and badging differences that distinguish it from a garden-variety Niro Hybrid. We spent 500 miles over two days in California with the new plug-in version of the Niro last week, and came to appreciate it as a total package. ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE: 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid first drive Like the conventional Niro Hybrid, the compact-wagon shape of the Niro is easy to get in and out of, rides higher than small hatchbacks do, holds a decent amount of cargo in its load bay, and has pleasing lines. Don't be fooled by any marketing you may see: The Niro is not a crossover utility vehicle, no matter what Kia says. You can't get all-wheel drive in any Niro, though Kia Motors USA executives note that it's a perennial request from North … [Read more...] about 2018 Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid first drive review (pricing from $28,840)
Judgment day has arrived for our Kia Niro. Not long after the hybrid wagon quietly rolled into our garage, we put it through our battery of tests measuring acceleration, handling, fuel economy, and other key areas of performance.Earlier, we tested a Kia Niro LX hitting 60 mph in 8.7 seconds. More than 110 pounds heavier, thanks to additional content, our long-term Touring managed the run in 9.6 seconds. That’s about on par with a 2016 Toyota Prius Four Touring, which reached 60 mph in 9.7 seconds. Meanwhile, a Hyundai Ioniq Limited slid to 60 in 9.4 seconds. The Niro traveled a quarter mile in 17.2 seconds at 79.0 mph, besting the Prius’ 17.4 seconds at 77.6 mph. In the figure eight, the Niro clocked 27.3 seconds at an average of 0.62 g, ahead of the Prius at 27.8 seconds at 0.61 g.On the road, the Niro feels unrefined in some ways, but it’s not for a lack of power. The six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission lurches abruptly at very low speeds, making for some … [Read more...] about 2017 Kia Niro Long-Term Update 1: Ecobox or Econobox?
