Hennessey Performance Engineering is known for turning already potent sports cars into ludicrously fast machines. But before doing so, the company likes to get a baseline of the stock car’s performance. In this video, Hennessey tests a stock 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350’s acceleration from 0 to 170 mph. With the camera pointed at the center-mounted digital speedometer and the tachometer to the left, the stock Shelby GT350 begins its acceleration run. With a fairly soft launch (according to Hennessey) just above 2,000 rpm, the high-performance Mustang takes off. The driver shifts firmly close to the engine’s 8,200-rpm redline. In this test, the Shelby GT350 reached 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, 100 mph in 10.4 seconds, 150 mph in 24.2 seconds, and 170 mph in 39.1 seconds. Top speed at the end of the run was a license-revoking 171.6 mph. In our testing, the stock 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 reached 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and finished the quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds at … [Read more...] about Watch a stock 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 do 0-170 MPH

2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 vs. 2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R: The Forever War
Photography By Drew PhillipsThere ain’t nothing Shakespearean about it. The ponycar wars are no longer a Tempest in a teapot. Gone are the days when Camaros and Mustangs were straight-line beasts (at least in the eyes of their owners) and lacked any sort of handling or finesse. But what is past is prologue. These days, even the entry-level iterations offer up actual sporty good times. And the midgrade versions—Camaro SS and Mustang GT—can bloody the lip of Europe’s finest. For not a ton of coin, either. Then you have the even more potent and more track-focused stuff, the battle that has raged for 50 years. You need your biggest guns; you want to go into battle with your heaviest weapons. For team Camaro, that’s the ZL1. For the Ford Performance folks, it’s none other than the Shelby GT350R. These are extreme machines, in both monstrous function and opulent excrescence. Is this the perfect comparison test? No. The naturally aspirated Shelby makes a … [Read more...] about 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 vs. 2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R: The Forever War
2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R
At the NAIAS 2015 Ford unveiled the new Shelby® GT350R Mustang, the most track-ready road-going production Mustang ever built. In 1965, Ford and Carroll Shelby developed a road-racing version of the popular Ford Mustang – the Shelby GT350 Competition model. Lighter, more powerful and with a highly developed suspension, it is one of the most iconic racing Mustangs ever produced. Arriving later this year, the new Shelby GT350R has been designed and engineered in the same spirit, delivering never-before-seen track capability from a Mustang – thanks to innovations in aerodynamics, chassis engineering and light-weighting. “The Shelby GT350R Mustang is a no-compromise car in the pursuit of maximum track capability,” said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. “It is a thoroughbred street car making use of technology and ingenuity to deliver performance few enthusiasts have ever experienced.” The car features the first-ever … [Read more...] about 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R

Mean Mustang, Good Cause: First 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R Headed to Auction for Charity
Wanna be first in line to get a new 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R? Sorry, that seat’s taken. As is becoming tradition, Ford gave the very first of the track monster Mustang to diabetes charity JDRF. The charity is sending VIN number 001 across the Barrett-Jackson auction block tomorrow. And you can bet it’s gonna command a hefty premium.Ford’s relationship with JDRF reaches back years. Through auctions like this, Ford has helped the charity raise nearly $4 million, and the very first 2015 Mustang netted the organization $300,000 when Ford and JDRF ran it across the Barrett-Jackson block a year ago.Alongside the R model, Barrett-Jackson will also be auctioning off the very first example of the slightly-more-street-oriented GT350. In both cases, the auction isn’t exactly for a specific car: The winner gets to spec out their first-ever super-Stang with whatever color combination and option package they desire.Given the GT350R’s purposeful … [Read more...] about Mean Mustang, Good Cause: First 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R Headed to Auction for Charity
OM(ustang)G! 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Prices Leaked!
Ford’s epic-looking Mustang Shelby GT350 needs to go on sale, and it needs to do so now. Having fraternized with the high-performance Mustang in nearly every way—we still haven’t driven it—the only remaining question marks pertain to the car’s price. Option pricing for the limited run of 2015 model-year GT350s leaked out a few weeks ago, but those cars’ base prices are still a mystery. Now the Mustang fiends over at Mustang6G.com have uncovered full pricing for the 2016 model-year GT350 and GT350R, and all we can say is look out, BMW M4.Surprisingly, the 2016 GT350 will be less expensive than expected, ringing in at $49,995 to start. (Technically, the base price is $48,695, but the order guide on Mustang6G appears to show a $1300 gas-guzzler tax, and we always include such fees in the base prices of cars so affected.) The even harder-core, track-focused GT350R treatment requires an additional $13,500, meaning you won’t be able to pick one … [Read more...] about OM(ustang)G! 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Prices Leaked!
Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R Gets Its Back Seat Back—as a $999 Extra
Part of what separates the track-focused Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R from the “regular” GT350 is that the R is supposed to be lighter. In order to make it lighter, Ford strips out some of the regular GT350’s standard equipment: air conditioning, the audio system, navigation, Sync 3, a rearview camera, side-view mirrors with turn-signal repeaters, auxiliary gauges, a garage-door opener, floor mats, and the back seat. The GT350R’s optional Electronics Package ($3000) puts all of that stuff back in, except for the back seat. Now Ford will let GT350R buyers add that, too.The seat—upholstered in the same black microsuede with red piping as the front seats—is available as an accessory, for $999 plus dealer installation. And, yes, it comes with seatbelts.Ford says the change is in response to customer demand. Evidently, customers want the maximum Shelby, but they’re not so into the minimalist spec. Add back in all of the optional stuff that the R is … [Read more...] about Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R Gets Its Back Seat Back—as a $999 Extra
Lightning Lap 2016: Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R
Class: LL2Lap time: 2:51.8Base price: $63,495As-tested price: $66,495Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2F: 305/30ZR-19 (98Y), R: 315/30ZR-19 (100Y) So close. The Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R is less than a second slower than the Chevy Camaro Z/28 we lapped two years ago. But while the times are nearly identical, the experiences couldn’t be more different. Next to the Z/28, which leaps over curbing and pounds the track into submission, the GT350R sops up the harsh stuff without upsetting the chassis or the driver. It’s 143 pounds lighter than the Z/28, its steering requires less muscle, and overall it comes across as more nimble and about three feet narrower. Ford’s high-revving DOHC 5.2-liter V-8 delivers torque more progressively and smoothly than the Chevy’s pushrod 7.0-liter small-block. On corner exits, it proves easier to get on the power sooner and harder without having to worry about overwhelming the rear tires. But in Turn 1, the GT350 … [Read more...] about Lightning Lap 2016: Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R
2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R: Riding Shotgun in One of the Year’s Most Anticipated Cars
Fully two years after the first inklings of the 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 and its ultra-focused R variant began to trickle across the autosphere, Ford has finally seen fit to let outsiders experience what is poised to be the most potent naturally aspirated production Mustang ever. Since the two cars’ auto-show debuts (the GT350 dropped in Los Angeles, the GT350R in Detroit), Ford has meted out details carefully, keeping enthusiasts and media on a need-to-know basis—as in, “we need to know, and Ford keeps stringing us along.” That ends now. Before you start firing shots in the air and chugging hooch in celebration, notice we said Ford was letting us “experience” the car. No, we didn’t get to drive it. But we did get to ride in it, stroke its flanks, and stare at it all googly-eyed while its flat-plane-crankshaft V-8 sang its siren song. Think of it this way: If you had a rich friend who booked Michigan’s Grattan Raceway for the … [Read more...] about 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R: Riding Shotgun in One of the Year’s Most Anticipated Cars
