4 Launched in 1997 as the ML, this Mercedes was the first of the premium SUV/crossover breed. It wasn't a particularly fine bloodline – based on a separate ladder-frame chassis, the early ML galumphed around feeling like a bull in search of a china shop. Yet it was a peculiarly American car; in the non-premium version of this market, Ford's Explorer was similarly ladder-framed, only receiving a unitary underbody for its fifth generation in 2011. For these cars seldom go off-road, but they do work in the “snow states” of the US and the ML was essentially an all-weather family troop carrier for well-heeled soccer moms. Astute readers will note that when the luxury brand overhauled its naming conventions and christened the GLE-Class back in early 2015, it was essentially a refresh of the extant M-Class, which had been around since mid-2011. CARS.COM — Which cars are included in the Takata airbag inflator recall? As of January 2018, the massive airbag inflator recall already covered some 50 million airbag inflators in 37.5 million cars in the U.S. after a series of expansions since the initial campaign. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration expects the still-expanding recall to affect 65 million to 70 million inflators in 42 million cars by 2020. The first recall, launched in 2012, apparently failed to capture the full range of affected vehicles. BMW has issued a third recall for faulty auxiliary water pumps, adding nearly 48,000 vehicles.The company initially recalled around 32,000 vehicles in 2011 after discovering that certain 5-Series, 7-Series, X5 and X6 vehicles were prone to fires from an overheating circuit board in the pump assembly.A second recall was launched in 2012, adding around 3,000 vehicles that were not covered in the initial campaign.
